Stacking vinyl records vertically is also impractical in the sense that if you're trying to grab a record near the bottom of the stack, you have to be extra careful as to not cause the entire stack to fall apart
@Diabolik7713 жыл бұрын
You should turn the shelf 90 degrees. Your top plate is not supported except by a few dowels. If you turned it 90, it would be like 10 times stronger because it would have 2 thick walls supporting the top which would help support the slim shelves as well. Best to reinforce the thin shelves with 90 degree metal brackets as well. Records are HEAVY
@Kalprog8 жыл бұрын
You definitely do not want too much space because it allows for flex between the discs. This is just as bad as piling horizontally. A couple inches of room is sufficient, the way they fell when you sat down made me cringe. I love the poly sleeves on every one, that helps prevent ring wear as well. Great videos keep it up!

Isn't it bad if records slightly lean on each other? Kind of like yours in the video? Because of the slight pressure
@vinyleyezz9 жыл бұрын
Actually I used to think that, but as long as they're not stacked horizontally they're ok. When they lean, their album covers take most of the weight.

+Davo Aleksanyan i was thinking the same... i would try to avoid heavy angles for storage. the records in the video just seems to be a little bit over that "angle".. but thats just my feel, cause having mayn records at that angle also causes pressure, so i would try to avoid it the best you can, at least for your rare ones :)
@Exelius6 жыл бұрын
Actually it is, records will warp. Record labels used to reccomend perfect vertical or horizontal stacking for storage, the only downfall of horizontal stacking being ring marks on the jackets because of wheight (and it also happens on tight vertical storage anyway)
@7JANEWAY6 жыл бұрын
The small boxes you can get from Walmart are perfect for vinyl storage. For just a few bucks, you can get a sturdy cardboard box that can hold up to about 75 albums. This is perfect for those of us who don't want to spend a lot of money on vinyl storage (I'd rather spend it on albums!). Just a tip you might like to pass on. Keep up the good work! :) :) :)

Yeah, Vinyl Eyezz, two things on those Ikea record racks; first, ALWAYS attach a 1/4" thick backing to the rack. It gives torsional strength you will find you need AND keeps dust out of the rack. Second, attach a metal "t" to each intersection in the front of the rack for the same reason.

I have a similar shelf system, the Better Homes and Gardens 8 space red lacquer from WalMart. Cost $80 shipped. Looks identical to the Ikea. Very strong, no sag whatsoever. I bought a long section of household trim molding from Home Depot, cut into 13" sections, and glued them behind the records to act as a stop, so they don't slide all the way back to the wall. Works like a champ.

The Ikea Expedit (now Kallax) is by far the absolute best record storage system for the money. If you have a table saw you can also make your own for even less. And Lowe's and Home Depot, et al, sell 4'x8' 5mm plywood sheets for around $15 that can be beautifully stained and nailed or screwed to the back. This makes it prettier and keeps records from slipping through. But, more importantly, it dramatically increases the strength of the cabinet.

I've been collecting LPs for over 50 years and plastic sleeves though they protect against ringwear won't necessarily protect against age spots or yellowish/orangey stains appearing. Any dampness or heat will affect LP covers whether in plastic sleeves or not. So rooms for LP storage must be kept cool or warm but not hot. And kept far away from any moisture. Sometimes plastic sleeves also cause problems with fostering eventual stains. I heard of one man who placed over a hundred thousand dollars worth of LPs in plastic sleeves and they all ended up with mould. Also, have less lean on your LPs as the above has too much lean. Leaning too much will bring about a negative effect on LP covers.
@zolarczakl64867 жыл бұрын
F-me! When I was just a teen in the 70s, I had my vinyl lps is a box, horizontally under my wire-springed bunk-bed. Then I noticed the spring marks showing up on the top album jacket. I also stacked a fuck-load of records onto the turntable's long multiple-capable spindle for long listening sessions. I realised that the extra weight tends to slow down the turntable... Fun times. Pet rocks and mood rings. Ahhh, the 70s and vinyl.

I have stored my records upright and lying down, and I have only experienced a warp problem on one record so fare. It was lying on the turntable, in the sun on hot summer day. So best way to avoid warp: Keep vinyl records away from heat and direct sunlight.
@tomwebb70913 жыл бұрын
Heat warps are the worst as they affect the grooves. Stacking records is not end of world as IF the LP warps it CAN be flattened back to like new. Heat warp its game over sadly. Ive found records stacked for decades and even the bottom ones werent warped even though id never recommend stacking anyway

I tried storing my records the way you recommended, they were standing up but leaning back against each other much like yours are on the shelf in the video but the one's in back with the most weight leaning back on them actually caused them to bow. Brand new records never listened to yet and already with a bow, never had that problem when laying them on top of each other maybe it was the flat downward weight keeping them flat instead of at an angle. Luckily I seen what was happening as they didn't look right on the shelf like the outer dust jacket was just starting to distort when the bow was just forming and I got to them before it got really bad but however slight it is the bow is still there. I like your channel as well as your content but having two essentially new records bowed from info I got here is really upsetting.

@tomwebb70913 жыл бұрын
Its bad enough allowing this amount of record lean already but to assemble the kallax and fill a shelf like this is also bad. The 4x2 kallax shown here must be kept with the 2 sections horizontally/flat and the 4 sections vertically. This means the larger cross section shelves are taking the record weight (around 60 lps per shelf is ALOT of weight!). Shown in this video we see a single inner cross section of shelf taking the weight and thus all thats keeping it up are the thin lugs as opposed to being better braced centrally the correct way. It does not take long on the internet to find images of collapsed ikea kallax (and record disaster!) due to the inner shelfs and lugs giving way from being aligned this weaker way. Just my two pennies.

@Livewire917 жыл бұрын
Matthew Crean Thw warehouse it was stored in might have stored the record the wrong way or have wrong temperatures. Or the shop have too many revords stacjed horizontally against it. I have bought 20 new 180 gram reissue lps and like 8 of them are a bit warped. It is pretty common. As long as it does not skip or cause disortion when you play them.
