Vinyl Siding vs Insulated Vinyl Siding: The Ultimate Comparison

We have over 30 year old vinyl siding on our house and other than initial install problems it is the best siding we ever had. Other than it faded it still looks great. We plan on going with a different color siding and we definitely will be going with vinyl siding again. Who would put on painted chipboard or cement panels on their home when you can have permanent vinyl siding.

Vinyl fades and vinyl does need cleaned yearly. It is not maintenance free. Also it an oil-can if not installed correctly or if houses nearby have low-E windows reflecting light off the windows and rippling your vinyl siding.

Yeah the thing about vinyl is that it’s final until you rip it off and put wood or composite on for honest to goodness real value instead of sun faded plastic wrap.

Why? The cost of insulated vinyl siding is about the cost of a more expensive material such as Hardie and/or LP siding. The only advantage is installation is a little less for insulated vinyl siding.

Konrad, If you are speaking from a new construction standpoint, you are absolutely right! However, most of our products are used in a residential application, so we deal with a lot of older homes with inadequate cavity insulation.

Progressive Foam - my question is this. If a homeowner decides to install insulation under their vinyl siding, it seems to me they would be better off with a rockwool type insulation over an 1" of EPS. Also, does the rainscreen go behind the insulation or behind the vinyl?

I'm trying to decide between Hardie and vinyl and uninsulated vinyl versus insulated. I my research I'm finding that people are saying insulated vinyl is almost as much as hardie, is that true?

Jocelyn, that is exactly what we are trying to decide. We had a hail storm last year and need to get our vinyl siding replaced. What our contractor told us is to go with insulated siding it would be a difference of $12,426 out of pocket. LP would be $19,138 (do not want LP) and Hardie would be a difference of $22,594. Honestly I like the idea of the insulated siding for the fact that it is more impact resistant and we are in an area where it does hail. But do I want to pay the price difference if our insurance company will replace our siding with regular siding with no out of pocket? Then I see a comment someone made about adding a foam insulation that has an R10 value and then put on regular vinyl siding over that. There again, will it still be a higher impact siding if we did it that way? Plus what I see on Lowe's website is a 2" X 4' X 8' R10 unsheathed unfaced polystyrene board insulation is $46.67. Not sure if this is the right stuff but doesn't look like that's inexpensive either and we have a large house. Hard to get the exact answers in our research sometimes. What did you end up going with and are you happy with it?

@loispetersen68 we ended up buying hardy and it's being installed now. It's 3400 sq ft so it was about 30K and the insulation bid is 18k for foam and the regular stuff

The only benefit to insulated vinyl siding is that it’s more resilient. The insulation does nothing to the r value of your house.

@@itsdimitriymedvedyev if you really think at the thinnest part of vynal siding which is maybe .50in is going to make a huge difference in house energy uses. i got a lack front to sell you. ask the r value for the thinnest part. looks like back with eps foam 4.4r per inch that would mean maybe r 2 or 1.1r its very little and insulation is the sum of any spot. best off doing 1 inch of eps then install regular vynal.

Regardless, vinyl is still vinyl, color fades, melts in high heat. I rather pay more to install James Hardie cement siding.
