I was planning on installing this product, but I'm afraid that water will get in through the joints and start to seep into the walls and ruin the neighbor's walls and the cure would be worse than the disease.

As long as it isn’t getting doused with water, you should be good to go. A couple drops here and there shouldn’t hurt. Good luck!
