The McDonald's record was a take on the 1974 hit record, "Life is a Rock, but the Radio Rolled Me" by Reunion. Listen to the song and you'll agree. By the way, the CD3 is the reason why the CD tray has the indentation And also, the first heart-shaped record was Bobby Caldwell's, "What You Won't Do For Love" in 1979. My copy is practically destroyed until I can replace it. Great video.

I have loads of early CD singles, and 3" CDs. At the time these came out, I got into CD early as a means to use in my DJ business. I saw them as a decent means to DJ quickly and without degradation to the sound. So once I started, I ended up buying loads of the CD singles that came out from the first batch that included Genesis' Land of Confusion, to the later 3" CDs. Some of those discs are fantastic - weird extra tracks galore, remixes, but best of all some truly odd packaging as they hadn't ironied out a standard case.
@MarkAtnip Жыл бұрын
One more odd thing about the 16" Associated Transcription disc is that it is Vertically cut so that the needle moves up and down to produce sound, as opposed to side to side. Obviously stereo would not be possible with this style of recording, but the sound quality produced by the transcription turntables at your local radio station was very good, especially on vinyl (as opposed to shellac) discs.
@RecordCollector96 Жыл бұрын
I can attest to that! Vertical cut ETs (for non-ET collectors, that's short for Electrical Transcription) are the better sounding of the two. They were more hi-fi sounding than the lateral cut ETs. If anyone couldn't already tell, I most certainly collect ETs!

I remember having a number of 3” CD Singles. Often the US ones would come with a plastic adapter ring the 3” disc would snap into, turning it into a standard 4.75” disc. This was done so the disc was playable in a drawer style player that didn’t have a spindle for you to set the disc on. Eventually drawer style players (and multi-disc players) were designed to have a 3” indentation for the disc to sit in.

The weirdest thing i own on vinyl is Geogaddi by Boards Of Canada; i suppose it isnt too weird but the second side of the third disc is completely blank, apart from a little etching of a family made from vinyl grooves. I dont really have many records so im very proud that i own this one
@UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq Жыл бұрын
Weirdest thing in my collection? Possibly the Pagan Music LP by Non from 1981. It's a single sided 17 track 7" with at least one (my copy only has one) extra random off centre spindle hole presented in a full size LP cover. Each of the 17 tracks is a locked groove meaning each track has an indeterminate duration and can be played at any speed. Combining the number of tracks with number of holes and turntable speeds means that when I bought it depending on which hole and groove you chose the LP provided 136 unique listening experiences. And considering any additional holes were always randomly placed at least half these experiences are unique to each pressing.

Perhaps you've heard of the postage stamps issued by Bhutan that are playable records. Mad Magazine occasionally included flexidiscs with their publication. And if you count weird record covers, as well as records, there's the Durutti Column L.P. made of sandpaper, intended to scratch the covers of any L.P.s that happened to be on either side of it. Hi Jarrett! I started my vinyl collection a few months ago, so I'm still a bit new to this, but during that time your videos have been a lot of fun to follow; I also watched a whole bunch of older videos on your channel and enjoyed them a lot. Now I have a question; I found a bunch of (very) old records at home that belonged to my grandfather. They weren't stored very properly; stacked on top of eachother (but they don't seem to be warped) and in what is basically a tool shed, covered in dust and stuff. Now I can easily remove all the dust (with a record cleaning kit, obviously), but sadly there's a bunch of scratches on them as well. Now I did find articles saying you can repair it by putting some (wood) glue on the affected area and then playing it on your record played so the needle will remove any excess glue, but that doesn't seem like the best idea to me 😅 Do you know any good ways to repair damaged/scratched records, maybe with a separate (cheaper) needle so you don't damage your good needle(?), or just a completely different way to do it? Maybe this is even a nice topic to make a video about, I'd certainly be interested because I'd love to play those records and see what my grandfather may have listened to when he was younger. Thanks in advance and keep spinning that vinyl :p

I don’t have anything super weird like this in my collection but one I want to highlight is the picture disc of Apollo 18 by They Might Be Giants. I usually don’t buy picture discs but it was the only pressing the store I was at had and TMBG is my favorite band so I snagged it. Side A is just the album cover but side B is kinda an optical illusion with stills from some of the music videos from some of the album’s tracks and when it spins on the turntable, it looks like the pictures are moving. So kinda like a flip book.

I work at a radio/television station here in North Dakota and back in storage was a turntable that played these records. I don't know what ever happened to it but I would imagine that it was thrown out when we moved to our new station about 15 years ago. Quite a shame, really since I believe that one of the first, if not the first, television cameras in the state also met a similar fate.

Hi Jarrett, I have a few Heart Shaped ones by different artists, I call them Stylus Killers. Cause If You don't get It In the groove, they will take Your Stylus right off. I also have a load of those 3" CD singles, as I was a Club DJ back In 78. And We started getting them coming In every week. It was another Two Years before I could actually hear them. I have a CD single that Is one side a Vinyl Record and a CD on the other. I also have Shaped CD's similar to the Vinyl ones. I have the Star Wars Soundtrack, that also has the Hologram In the middle. And a LP that has No sound on It at all. Plus a Single with a Gyroscope You put In the middle, and as It spins, You look through the gaps, and looks like the people are dancing. There are others as well. Keep 'Em Coming.

The McDonald's record reminds me of the Halloween record Winchell's Donuts put out! A thin, flat plastic one with the "kids" that were in their commercials in the 70s! We had it and after I got bored playing it I would change the speed! Haha! The whole thing is actually here on KZbin! My brother had The Split Enz album that was "laser etched" with patterns on it that really didn't do much but look cool! The hologram record makes me think of the old Red Raven mirrored spinner records from the 50s that would illustrate the pictures around the centers!

Several records between 1978 and 1983 had limited issues on unusual shaped or coloured (or both) vinyl: It Takes Two To Tango by Richard Myhill - a bloke who normally wrote advert jingles and “test card music” - a limited edition version of that was the world’s first square record - the flexi-discs some people have commented on probably didn’t count as records! My sister has - or had - in her record collection a song by Alan Price on red heart-shaped vinyl! I have seen also a version of Sweet Talkin’ Woman by ELO on purple vinyl! A limited edition of Down Under by the Australian band Men At Work was intricately cut into the shape of Australia! A single by Kissing The Pink, who had a hit in 1983 with The Last Film - can’t remember what the song was called - but it had two mixes of the song and two grooves - depending on which groove you put it in or the autochanger placed it, you got a different mix! I’m sure there was a song whose B-side was just the A-side, played backwards! I thought I had discovered a version of the 12” version of IOU by Freez on silver vinyl - turned out someone had just sprayed silver Humbrol enamel on it! These unusually-shaped records only worked with vinyl singles - although some modern vinyl LPs are on coloured vinyl - check out the Now Yearbook vinyl LPs! Various magazines gave away promotional flexi-discs!

I've got a die-cut shaped record!! John Linnell's State Songs Montana single, which is shaped like the United States, haha. Instead of the song names, there's just a silhouette of the state the songs are named for (Montana & Louisiana) and it's made with a pretty mottled green vinyl that matches nicely with the little cover printed on the sleeve for the single as well as the State Songs album itself !! Also I've got They Might Be Giants' Flood picture disc which has the album artwork printed on one side and a series of zoetropes on the other that animates when the vinyl is rotating on the turntable!! I admittedly don't own the equipment to actually play them but (marge simpson voice) I just think they're neat, lol. It's so cool to see what kind of wacky things they can do with a vinyl record and still have it play music! (also I recently obtained my first mini CD and I think they're also super cool tho trying to get it to fit on my cd shelf with that rectangular case is impossible, it was too tall to fit at all in the vertical orientation and stuck out wayyy too much for my liking when placed horizontally so it's unceremoniously wedged in on top of the normal size cds, lmao)

Except for 1 liquid filled, 1 shaped record, three 12"-singles with edged B-side, a misprinted picture disc with two times the same side and different album art and the semi-printed Release of british Steel from RSD 2019, the craziest ones I caught (on ebay, unsurprisingly) are weird because what "music" is on them. I have one Sound Effects LP used in the 80s for film productions, there's a narrated one from the GDR, used to introduce Stereo speakers to the people and help them setting them up. Labels releasing Video Game Music get crazy ideas these days. My personal holy grail would be the cancelled and extremely obscure Silent Hills P.T. Bootleg, packed in a "bloody bag" with many bizarre extras. Also the gravity falls "decoder vinyl", revealing hidden messages on the sleeve if seen through may count, so would the atmospheric Soundscape of the game "scorn", which has no credits, tracks or description provided anywhere on the sleeve. The game OST from "Portal" however comes in a huge sleeve that can be folded in two directions while "Sea of Thieves" has pop-up Disc labels, so you can rebuild an abandoned island and these I just which came to my mind at first. Bonus: The Otamatone Meme-Songs Cover Album, which actually exists as a coloured 45rpm 2LP. Of course in my collection.

The British Path'e Disks are played from the inside out! - I found a British Path'e Disk player on the Good Will site Last year and almost purchased it. but the S@ H was about $150 And then if I remeber right, the Bid was $20... Also the Path'e disks run at 80 RPM! not that 78 rpm is much slower but, if you do find a Victrola - you just might find the Phonograph to be running around 75 rpm or slower. some, people wanted the music to have a longer running time. and also, grease and parts were out!

Actually, transcription discs were used for thousands of radio comedy and drama shows, plus news events and more beyond music in the time period you noted. They were around before the post-WWII magnetic tape boom (the Germans hadn't invented that tape) and more practical than wire recordings. Most old radio shows come from them still, including many discs form the U.S. Armed Services who preserves tons of recording when radio stations nation wide apparently did not or their discs got too worn out to keep playing.
