Interesting, if unfortunate, bit of trivia: The bass player and singer on that tune, Roy Estrada, is currently incarcerated in the Texas State Prison System. He was convicted for sex offenses, first having been convicted of child sex abuse in 1994 and serving six years' imprisonment, then pleading guilty to abuse of a young relative in 2012. He will not be eligible for release until 2036, at which time he will be 93 years old.

I’m pretty sure he’s actually singing “Oh who’s this guy” and the other line is “One night love”, making it about a kid who gets off with a girl one night but sees her getting off with someone else the next night; this makes more sense given the doo-wop music setting (the words of which tended to be about the highs and lows of teen romance) It’s brilliant because it tells you a whole story of young heartbreak using only two lines instead of a whole lyric...

Very sad to hear Roy is a pedo which I only discovered recently. The Mothers Of Invention was a deliberately freaky rock band which was always going to attract weirdo's but if Zappa had known about Roy he would have dropped him like a stone, unfortunate Zappa brought him back a few times. I thought there was something weird about him when he was playing with the blow up doll in Baby Snakes but I thought it was just for show. It's no consolation that Roy did his sex offences after Zappa died at least Roy was shown to be a freak

William W. Campbell-Shepherd IX yeah and how many ancient civilizations engaged in slavery boomer? The whole idea that because a civilization of the past engaged in a certain activity that means “x” is acceptable, is nonsense. He molested children, I don’t care if they were 11 or 13, that’s unacceptable and he should at the least, be punished. This age of moral relativism we live in thanks to the yippie generation bringing it to the forefront in the 1960s, is destroying European civilization.

@mu99ins 4 жыл бұрын
Let me say this carefully, so as not to offend... You wouldn't want America to scarf up the world and shit on it, would ya? Oh, absolutely not. Never. Stop it. I love simplistic politics. It's so tidy and easy to understand. I love Zappa music, and some of his politics WAS right on. And during the Vietnam War, people were wondering, what the heck? And so blanket statements were made, and people began to think...sort of. Anyhow, the upshot was, as always, they got some things right, and most things wrong. The Yippies (different than Hippies) of that era eventually took over education in America, so now, instead of Liberal education, the schools teach socialism, careful to not to name it as such. History has been deconstructed. Art has been deconstructed. Literature has been deconstructed. Free speech has been deconstructed. Math has been decolonized. Gender has been deconstructed. Males die at a higher rate during the Chinese virus pandemic, and so womanhood is the victim. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4vbg4OaodStf6M

I saw The Grandmothers way back when, featuring Roy Estrada, Bunk (or Buzz) Gardner, Don Preston, Billy Mundi, and somebody I've never heard of on guitar. It was a nightclub so very intimate setting. I got Roy to sing a few seconds of "Oh, In The Sky" I'm sure not many people ever requested that. This was long before KZbin made all of this possible.

Luv the post early 60’s Doo-wop flair, they can do a whole valli and everly brothers alternate renditions, and would still sound whole heartedly dope

Zappa force them to play along with him. They were his hostages. The part when the singer crying 'Oh, in the sky' is actually a hint of him trying to tell police they were kept hostages by Zappa. 😅

You implication being that this is the type of music a teen sex abuser would make? I say, no. I do not conflate one's sexual urges to art. The Birdman of Alcatraz, who studied birds and their diseases, also wrote child pornography. So, should we discard his work with bird diseases?
