Girl you must be stupid in SO many levels to feel your ancestors. All you Blacks abroad who have never been to Africa need to bug a ONE way ticket, come to the continent and LEARN ABOUT WHO you are for 1 year… As an African I am absolutely disgusted that such a movie was made. If Lupita N’yongo was intelligent enough to pull out of staring in the movie out of deep respect that such people must NEVER BE SPOKEN OFF OR PRAISED for the EVIL they committed, why they HELL should Viola David or John Boyega make such movie??? It’s bad enough the transatlantic slave trade was ALSO our very own Black people selling ourselves out to the white man, these tribes were no different. The Sokoto Empire of Nigeria enslaved more slaves of black people than any white man ever did. We are trying to do away with burying the past and heal. Then you glorify slave traders and think making it look like the white man is the bad guy makes the movie a blockbuster????? DISGUSTING… THIS MOVIE IS AN INSULT TO ME AS AN AFRICAN. RUBBISHHHHH…. There are other powerful and more inspiring African stories that would break box offices. LOADS OF.

"How accurate is The Woman King?" we learned that in real life, the Dahomey are much more the villains than the heroes. The Kingdom of Dahomey was a bloodthirsty society bent on conquest. It was customary for the Dahomey to return home with the rotting heads and genitals of those they killed in battle. They conquered neighboring African states and took their citizens as slaves, selling many in the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for items like rifles, tobacco, and alcohol. Many of the slaves they sold ended up in America. They also kept some slaves for themselves to work on royal plantations. The business of slavery is what brought Dahomey most of its wealth. For them, it very much came down to either enslave others or become enslaved yourself. The Agojie (women warriors) fought in slave raids along with the male fighters. There are accounts of Dahomey warriors conducting slave raids on villages where they cut the heads off of the elderly and rip the bottom jaw bones off others. During the raids, they'd burn the villages to the ground. Those who they let live, including the children, were taken captive and sold as slaves. The movie strategically downplays this part of Dahomey's history, so as to not complicate the story with the truth. Each year in Dahomey, roughly 500 slaves and criminals were mass executed in large-scale human sacrifices during the religious ceremonies of a festival known as the Annual Customs of Dahomey. Most were sacrificed by way of decapitation, a method of killing widely used by the Dahomean kings. The 1727 Annual Customs of the Dahomey ceremony reportedly saw as many as 4,000 people sacrificed.

@@renewilson2540 You know the real story about this movie? Do you know Arabs enslaved 3 million africans on the East coast alone? And were the only ones together with the portugese to step foot on land , and help ( yes help, because africans already enslaved other africans to sell to other african tribes long before white men came sailing by and discovered Africa) to capture them? White people from europe found them being sold already at the coast, and they could not step on land because Malaria would kill them off within a few weeks. And they had to listen to the kings of that area who were powerful, when it came to slave trade aggreements. Normally Europeans enslaved other europeans, and Africans enslaved their people, while Natives did the same to theirs ( although they were more keen on slaughtering each other for ritual sacrifice) And Asians enslaved other Asians. Arabs took other arabs but liked to enslave northen and eastern Africans. In fact, Caucasians were the first ones to end slavery, and it took so long, because most African tribes fought back, because they wanted to keep on selling their people. It was very profitable, and they did not see why it would be wrong. It was so normal culturally, most countries fought back to keep their trade going. That is what this movie is about. This tribe in the actual story would not stop enslaving other tribes near them. The French came in to protect them and killed all the female warriors to end the slave trade over there. Yeah. Learn your history.Anti whiteism is disgusting. It is plain racism to portray white people as evil, even though history tells a completel different story. It was never about race. It was about power, for everyone involved. Including Africans.

That movie is a movie where a tribe of people who enslaved black Africans and sold them to British, French and Dutch colonialists so much that the king of the time was known as “the Slave King” is portrayed as a tribe of people that fought against slavery because they’re black with some female warriors and it fits their agenda to present black women as liberators rather than oppressors and slave traders. And then in countless interviews to present this lie as historical fact regardless of the reality and how insulting that is to the memory of their victims. Dahomey was organized for war, not only to expand its boundaries but also to take captives as slaves. Slaves were either sold to the Europeans in exchange for weapons or kept to work the royal plantations that supplied food for the army and court. The Dahomey Kingdom became known to European traders at this time as a major source of slaves in the slave trade at Allada and Whydah. In 1851-1852, the British imposed a naval blockade on the ports of Dahomey in order to force them to end the slave trade. In January 1852, Ghezo accepted a treaty with the British ending the export of slaves from Dahomey. he Kingdom of Dahomey was an important regional power that had an organized domestic economy built on conquest and slave labor, significant international trade and diplomatic relations with Europeans, a centralized administration, taxation systems, and an organized military. There were two Franco-Dahomean wars, which ended in 1894 with France taking over. The Kingdom of Dahomey eventually became French Dahomey, a colony, ten years later. This movie is supposed to be based on a true story… But the depiction is not true! Hollywood is crazy! All they care about is ‘female empowerment’. How pathetic. This movie is a sham!

It's not a memoir Lorena. This is fake. It's not history, it's fiction. Read the history, that's all I'll say, I've made more in depth comments about the actual story of what occurred. My own family suffered from the predations of the Dahomey. There was NO Dahomey Woman King fighting for freedom. They were the enslavers. The British tried to persuade the Dahomey to stop the evil trade, they refused. In the end it was the French who had to use military force to stop the Dahomey from taking slaves. It should be sad for us people of African heritage but it was white Frenchmen who freed us from Dahomey slavers. The Dahomey women were the administrators of the trade. They were as bad as the men.

One should never seek historical accuracy in a Hollywood film. Just accept the movie 🎬 for what it is : action thriller with a heroine at the center. The Dahomey were fought by the French because they were literally invading other African tribes and capturing & selling them to the Atlantic slave trade, often for alcohol and guns, in addition to the slaves they kept for themselves. @SocialismKills
@SocialismKills Жыл бұрын

Yeah. It is downplayed a bit, but this is a major plot of the movie. It's a "what if" type situation for if they had a general who pushed them switch to other trades. Not accurate, but a fantasy. Like when killing Commodus pushed Rome back into a republic in Gladiator, or when they kill Hitler/the family in those Tarantino movies. The difference here though is that a lot of people in the West don't automatically know the history of the Dahomey, so it's important to do research. But I think most people know that the slave trade wasn't overthrown by Africans. The movie is a good starting point to learn more.
