Apparently Estudiantes always played like that - there's a video of Leeds United's worst fouls and one of the comments underneath is an Argentinian football fan saying "yeah we've got a team like that: Estudiantes"

Yes for many years many of these South American teams somehow were allowed to get away with "Murder;". Even if they could play,they're primary focus was to do absolutely whatever was necessary to get the desired result!..And Dirty,illegal tactics were top of the list,then nick an goal..and it worked!

@@quiensos8268 No arguments there! It was far more physical( Dirty) but George Best was not someone who played that way.He might do the odd rash tackle,but he was never regarded as a Dirty player!

@@quiensos8268 Nonsense. An Argentine football fan said that Estudiantes were the worst in their country for this sort of thing. Best & Stiles and the rest were used to violent players in England at that time (people like Norman Hunter & Chopper Harris who thought they were hard men) but they were amazed by how Estudiantes behaved. Best punched a guy after being spat on & kicked for 20 minutes. The same player (Medina) was kicking and then diving all the time, he also tried to get Kidd sent off earlier in the game. Medina was a cheat, quite simply I might also mention Maradona's handball in the world cup, and Simeone's play-acting to get Beckham sent off. The original poster here is quite correct - certain South American teams do seem notable for doing ANYTHING to win a match, including things that English players see as unsportsmanlike: it's a different attitude to sport. Sorry if you don't like it - but I think it's true

I watched this 1968 debacle when I was 13. When it was over I had only distain for Argentinians. They were a long way from Brazil. In time I saw the reason for such horrendous play by Estudiantes was due to the bad blood stemming from the 1966 World Cup Quarter Final between England and Argentina. A game called tha el robo del siglo (the robbery of the century) in Argentina. But Manchester United, in 1968, was a club team made up of mostly Irish and Scottish players, so as a school boy I failed to understand the hostility of the South Americans. To this day I will always consider Estudiantes a team of thugs and an embarrassment to Argentinian football, which not even Messi or Maradona can erase.

Didn't Alf Ramsey try to stop English players swapping shirts with the Argentine players afterwards? All because he was so incensed by their behaviour in that game too... different attitude to sport, really. I don't really blame them. I vastly prefer our attitude to sportsmanship (which British players don't always live up to), but Argentina has produced a steady stream of football geniuses
