The town of Kamusie in Papua New Guinea is plagued by corruption and the authoritarian repression of local workers and landowners by a local manufacturing company and the police.
The spectacularly beautiful scenery of the surrounding jungle and mountainous landscape, as contained here in some quality footage, offers no solace to the workers who have suffered violence and extreme mal-treatment allegedly ordered by large local companies like Rimbunan Hijau. One of the perpetrators of such brutality in the local mill was once Bani, who admits that he was willing to do whatever the company asked him to do once he had received a regular bribe. Now a reformed policeman, Bani relates in this chilling film the kind of work he was asked to do at the mill, while Dateline investigates his claims in some probing interviews with the local authorities.

Funny how peoples morals kick in after they’ve earned enough to flee the people they persecuted and live a comfortable life feeling remorse.. what he needs to feel is the same punishment he dished out.. then he can really feel sorry for himself

Once, I went to Kikori and Baimuru along the waterways of West Kerema, I was really astonished by the number of logs being chopped upstream and towed downriver on pontoons by tugboats in these very remote areas and was just wondering if there were any Government officers available in those areas to monitor the logging actives. It's very sad that Landowners have very minimal or no rights at all over their land. It's the so-called middle man in Government, in Towns or major centres that sign the deals with those logging companies without the knowledge or concent of the true local village landowners who are in the villages. It is very sad. We Papua New Guineans are money face people and we just can't resist the money. We just don't know how to say ''NO''. to bribery.

It is possible Alex Pollino. This is Papua New Guinea and I believe that guy. That old cop is totally lost and doesn't know what's happening under his management. The land is an inheritance and will never be taken lightly...even to death. I believe that former cop story.

The PNG police officers were usually paid allowances of K200 (AuD81) to K250 (AuD102) per day depending on their ranks. That was between 2010 and 2014. I don't know what the rate is like now. You compare that allowance rate to their (police) very low regular government fortnight packets, and you can be sure they'll do anything to those poor LOs when directed by the company with the promise of a hefty pay packet of more than K2,000.

To the brother who came out and stopped and did the interview. You’re honesty is respected. Even though yu paitim ol wan barata na susa blo u for this company which was wrong, atleast yu lusim na tanim and stopped and exposes this. It’s sad that there are those in the task force that fall for the briberies from these foreign companies but I cannot blame them because their pay grade isn’t any better. Papua Nee Guinea’s economy has been crap and barely pays for public servants. It’s a sad situation. Not saying that those who are supposed to protect and serve are allowed to take the law into their own hands under bribes, but the problem goes all the way to the top. Corruption is a problem in my nation. It’s heart wrenching seeing these interviews but I have to give credit to the brother who spoke out. Papa God stap wantem you.

You might complain about the way police officers behave here but have you seen how most of the people that they have to police behave?? It's really really brutal and a normal police officers from a western countries would be laughed at and most probably be killed in a horrible way!! To police a hard people you have to have a be hard reputation!!! On top of this there's no where near enough officers to do even a halfway good job and the pay is terrible no wonder that most take bribes!!! It's a country with a lot of natural resources but extremely undeveloped but now everyone wants a modern style life and there's just not enough infrostruer to do this!!! The leaders are extremely corrupt so the country is being raped by other countries with the blessing of pngs leadership!! Hopefully it will get better leaders who can help out the people and not themselves!!!
