Interesting how "The Valley" changed. In late 2001/2002 Army SF and Rangers had swept the valley. They made contact with the Pashai Tribes who occupied The Valley. The Pashai are anti-government, anti-Taliban and Anti-coalitiion. It was not uncommon to take fire from the Pashai and the Taliban. I always felt bad for the Marines who initially took up presence in The Valley and later the 173rd Airborne. The Valley became incredibly hostile in 2005/06.

I heard about this on NATGEOs' documentary "Restrepo". Everything from the hostiles physically getting their hands on our troopers, to Guinta killing one of them trying to take one of ours into captivity. Didn't know he gave the MoH to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. HOOAH!

Before I joined I used to work as a volunteer snowboarding instructor at the local teen center where Sal did as well. I found out he got awarded the medal by reading the local newspaper and when I congratulated him about it he asked me not to because he did nothing special from everyone else that was there. The humanity and the humility he displayed every single day is a quality that I always strive to emulate. Glad I knew you Sal

Watched both before bed, and can sleep a little better knowing there are true selfless heroes out their kicking ass, and maybe the occasional AC-130 placing asses far away from where they were originally. Great segment. You got my vote for doing more.

Thank you for sharing these stories of true heroes. I sit down and listen to these with my two-year-old on my lap. His Greatfather survived Normandy for me to have the opportunity to hold my son in my arms. it is our duty as fathers and his fellow Americans to share these stories thank you and God bless

I once heard a violent but true bedtime story. It was the story of a real hero and his heroic comrades. He,along with his heroic comrades, fights against a overpowered, multitude, barbaric enemy. His name was Michael Wittmann. May he rest in peace.
