Maybe it's because I'm a New Yorker but I can't understand why she was made to look so callous on her season. She's just brutally honest, and I'd rather be around honest people than people that fake being honest. I like to know where I stand with people on a personal level. I fully love that Violet came into this wanting to read all of Mik's looks for the payment and just couldn't put aside her honesty for two seconds to allow for it. Tbf though, the fact that Mik was able to give more cutting reads in the first episode is more of a sign of how much Violet has grown since her season. Meanwhile, obviously Mik is incredibly talented, but he's also fresh off his season. He still has time to grow and these looks - while 100% all fabulous to me now - haven't given the time to age, which tends to be the times when we read looks harder, as aspects of the look will have fallen out of fashion.

@@zag285 100% - also, Violet mentioned spending very little for the show, and while Mik bleeped out how much he spent, it's obviously implied that there's a great disparity between these two numbers. Not to mention that Violet made so many of the outfits she wore on her season, but newer seasons have less emphasis on design in general, and a larger emphasis on coming to the show with a wardrobe of pre-planned looks. Not giving a value judgment to one style or the other, but it just explains the disparity between the two seasons.

I appreciated Violet's commentary on the AIDS epidemic. In the early 80s I remember how little we understood, especially in South GA. Most of my close friends were gay men and I worried about them. I LOVED the Keith Haring look, it might be my favourite look I’ve seen on drag race simply because there are so many young fans of drag race who don’t yet know our history and how awful things were in the 80s/90s while our people were dying of an awful disease in droves and the governments around the world ignored it or said it was a good thing. Artists and activists like Keith Haring and David Wojnarowicz were so crucial to getting people to mobilise and challenge what was happening and they saved so many lives, and they’re incredibly important figures in LGBTQA+ history.

i totally agree that while i do like watching rpdr for the looks and supporting all the contestants, the production behind it is much more about drama and twists and gimmicks and a lot of the challenges are kinda bullshit (pink table talk, not sorry). it's so frustrating bc i have so much fun watching the queens perform but it's like the producers (and probably rupaul idk how much he's involved) are more obsessed with making every season different and quirky and gimmicky instead of just letting the talent they hired shine for who they are.

I think S13 and AS6 had a bunch of talented queens, maybe one of the strongest casts we have ever seen. However, I hated S13 because all the twists and gimmicks that didn't make any sense (also, a lot of stupid challenges). Same with AS6 but I think the queens in there already knew how to play the game and knew how to entretain even with production forcing narratives and gags.

@@MrOiRaM24 absolutely. this is something Violet and Gottmik talked about on their last episode, but i think the show would be greatly improved if they showed more of the creative process. that way they don't have to reach for drama or try to fix tension between the queens that doesn't really exist (Joslyn Fox and Courtney Act, for example). learning about how the queens make their looks and the thought processes that go behind them would be so much more fun to watch than "half of you get treated as lesser queens just because you did slightly worse on an impromptu lip sync ten minutes after showing up."

@@clemermoacir yeah it's impossible to please everyone. i just think it's not worth exploiting the contestants' feelings and manufacturing drama just for the sake of "good tv." and i don't know if you mean main season 6 or all stars' 6 but i certainly didn't mind AS6 except for some of challenges and critiques. some of the challenges were strange and the critiques seemed super arbitrary. i mentioned in another reply that i think a good thing to replace the manufactured drama would be showing the creative stuff behind the looks. like watching Nogorge and hearing about Gottmik spray-painting her outfits in the parking lot and Violet making her half-man/half-woman outfit was so much more fun than the whole porkchop lipsync thing.

Season 13 was the most over-produced and rigged season EVER. Even that first episode was all about testing all the queens' lipsync abilities so they knew who'd win in a lipsync for your life to help them control who went home etc. The Kandy favouritism was ridiculous and I called it on episode 4 that she had been pre-chosen as top 4.

Don't call out one person. Drag Race production does it every season. The entire top four are pretty much chosen from the off. Focusing on one person over something that wasn't her fault at all really creates a toxic environment. Think about it this way; Drag Race has always been produced, it's a reality show. The difference is that S13 was sloppily produced, so more people noticed it. That's all.
