Definitely do two rows of gathering stitches! I like to do one gathering stitch inside the seam allowance and one outside (so one at 1/4” and one at 3/4”). That stabilizes the gatherers on both sides of the stitch line and prevents any shifting.

I have sewn off and on for 20 years and I love this tutorial! Nice job! You confirmed that this girl has been doing it right all these years! I laugh every time I see that rack fall down because that is how my day usually goes. I have not tried a pattern yet. I am new to PDF patterns. I am a bit nervous about trying it. Great tutorial! A little more detail on the application of bias tape would be great. Maybe just some pictures of the steps. Gorgeous fabrics and a darling dress!

My favorite way to gather is to zigzag over top of a piece of carpet thread. Simply pull the carpet thread to the desired length. To hold each end in place as you pull, insert a straight pin, then do a figure 8 with the carpet thread a few times around the pin. It only moves when you want it to. This has helped me so many times.

I've heard of that idea of using the zigzag stitch for gathering but instead of carpet thread, unwaxed dental floss.
