The most impressive part of this whole thing is getting his knives sharp enough. After years of trying to keep carvng knives the right sharpness, I now use a knife as seldom as possible, and pick projects accordingly.

Beautiful work. I am intrigued at how such a small joint can handle the tension of the strings.
@direland726 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is pretty amazing....however if you spend time getting the joint flush (you can also chalk fit it) the hide glue binds the joint like concrete....it is pretty strong

David Ireland thanks for the reply. I'm teaching myself to make stringed instruments like ukes and mandolins and want to use violin techniques where possible. Guitar neck joints seem like overkill in comparison.

Yes the joint is simple in comparison to the dove tapered joints of guitars. The principle for violins, it seems, is that they are designed to be taken apart if required. So they are fundamentally butt joints. However they are also angled which take some of the pressure whereas guitars are level with the body.

Thanks for he replies. I recently discover Ignacio Fleta. A spanish luthier who made use of a dovetail joint rather than using the usual method of building the neck into the sides. He had been trained in violin family building and after a certain point decided to focus primarily on guitars. Apparently he's the stradivarius of the guitar. Or one of them at least as there are a couple of key buiders. Guitar necks are prone to movement, I own a 30 year old spanish guitar and there is twisting in the neck caused by string tenstion which could be fixed easily if it were possible to take it apart easily but it requires removal of the top. Feta also used an internal mold rather than an external. I also read that the back of the violin extends to the heel of the neck and that this helps maitain it. There's a modern luthier called Ken Armstrong who makes archtop jazz guitars. His designs are influenced by violin construction techniques. I'm going to try the butt mortice type joint on my ukulele and a neck that floats over a flat top.

Thanks for the info as well....I will be sure to look them up...!! Yes the bottom plate extends to the heel of the neck which helps hold it in.

I would like to see a video of carving the top and bottom and how you determine what the pattern of thickness is and how you maintain the thickness of them. Also do you pick old growth wood to use?
@direland726 жыл бұрын
Gary....yes I am planning a video on the way I do graduation and plate tuning. The problem is that I like experimenting and have not settled on a single procedure. I probably never will..!! I used seasoned , air dried tone wood from various suppliers. I would like to harvest my own one day. I also plan on trying out Australian native wood as well.

David how long does it take to make a violin start to finish? Are violins alone enough to make a decent living off?

What is the price for same piece. Sorry to ask such ridiculous question here..😴

I have a cheap viola body (I have removed the neck) and would like to attach a guitar neck. Do you have any tips for me ? Thanks!
@direland726 жыл бұрын
Wow...The main thing you would need to take into account is the neck angle. you will still need to clear the arching on the belly of the viola. You wont need to maintain the standard neck angle. A smaller angle would do. You may need to make a custom bridge to handle the strings. Good luck.

I don't know much about violin construction, but I was wondering why the blocks are shaped after the bottom plate is glued on as opposed to before, with the ribs removed from the mould?
@direland727 жыл бұрын
Patrick....the ribs with the mold are glued onto the bottom plate. The mould is then removed and the blocks shaped. Some makers remove the mould before gluing the rib structure on. Either way has pro's and cons...I prefer gluing it with the mould in place.....
