Thank you. I'm a newbe for playing violin. I'm trying to learn the very basic how to handle violin before engaging a teacher. Worried at first to pick up wrong technique and accumulate bad habits. But with your teaching I am glad that I am sure I am doing the right things.

I have 2 sons who are very good violinists - the eldest is a professional violinist - so I've sat through a lot of lessons. I love your teaching style. I had a spare violin in the house and decided a while ago to teach myself. Your lessons will be a great help. It's a shame you don't live round the corner! You're fantastic!

I've seen alot of teaching videos online, most are pretty terrible. I have several students, but am by far, not a Berkley or Julliard grad! Your methodology is clear, concise and accurate. You have put at least a couple of thousand dollars worth of lessons on You Tube, and brother, I sure do appreicate it! You're videos are well done.

Well, what type of bow do you have? (wood or carbon fibre?) The easiest way to determine if your bow is still usable: just check with your teacher or go to a luthier - it takes them a sec to tell you! Otherwise, if the hair got funny and even after putting rosin you're not able to create an even sound from frog to tip, that can be an indicator. Or if the stick gets funny... Or if it's impossible to change the tension of it... There's like a million reasons!

if you are playing mF, F, FF, sometimes even FFF lol you want to press into the string to make a loud sound. but if you are playing mp, p, or pp you would want to go with your technique, so yes you are right. just not right if you are playing loud

However, silly me didn't think to watch these videos when i was starting out on the violin and teaching myself, so I have to unlearn the bad habits and relearn the good ones, such as the ones shown in this video. If the bow bounces on the string whenever you do string crossing, there is only one explanation to that. And that is : you are pressing the bow too much on the string. Try zero pressure when you are string crossing and also when shifting positions.

I still think about how I make a loop on my shoelaces. I wish I learn how to cross strings without thinking about this though.

Thank you very much for this video. I really want to learn how to play the violin. I was gonna buy one last week but i found out that there are 4, 5, 6, & 7 string violins Now im more confuse than ever which one to buy. With you video, i realize its a whole lot more difficult than I thought it is. Please advise.
@46anna199512 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you're still having issues but if you are, the scratchy string sound could be because you've got very cheap strings. The only thing a cheap violin could do is provide poor tone quality and tuning difficulties. I definitely encourage investing in better strings, even if your instrument is cheap. The strings make a HUGE difference. If you don't know how to change strings, you should ask someone from the music store you buy from to help you out. Good luck!

first saw this lesson two years ago. I heard that something was not quite right (but only just!) right in my bowing. I looked in the mirror and mentally refered to this lesson. What I play is simple, but pure and in tune. Moreso due to rewinding to this. I have never had a private lesson. Were I to record a video, could you point out any flaws in my technique?.

I have a similar neck length to you and I feel like I need a higher chin rest. What kind are you using? It looks like it's got some height to it.
@professorV8 жыл бұрын
Allen, that is a Carl Flesch model, with a hump in the middle. They also make the Flesch with no hump. Finding a perfect setup can be a challenge, so if possible, visit a violin shop to try out different chinrest/shoulder rest combinations. Good luck!
