Back in the early 1970's, when I felt deeply sad, I would listen to this very recording by Leonard Rose. My soul resonated with the pain I felt in the minor chords of the orchestra and in the depths of the searching cries I felt in the guts of the cello's voice. And I experienced a companion in my pain. I always left feeling comforted. Thank you for posting this recording.

Leonard Rose was one of the greatest musicians and 'cellists of all time; his playing is transcendental here. Maestro Ormandy is mostly unimaginative and adopts slower than usual tempi in his collaboration, although the orchestra plays well; however at 16'02" the performance catches fire and leads to a most satisfying conclusion.
