Giovanni Battista Viotti was by far the most important Piedmontese musician of the classical period. Born in 1755 in Fontanetto Po, near Vercelli, his life could become the subject of a novel. After training in Turin with Gaetano Pugnani, he traveled all over the world: he was active at the court of Versailles until the revolutionaries induced him to change his air to save his neck, he played and lived practically all over Europe, he was a virtuoso of rare excellence, but also a celebrated composer, he was admired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn and was also appreciated by Johannes Brahms, he engaged as an impresario, teacher and even as a wine merchant. He finally died in London in 1824. Musically he was an innovator, projected already toward the Romantic style, and invented the modern bow, which in fact bears his name and is still in use today. He was also the main architect behind the birth of the myth of Cremonese luthier Antonio Stradivari, helping to make him world-famous: in fact, he was among the very first artists to perform with his instruments in Paris, London and at major European courts, and in all he owned a dozen of them. Despite his significant role in the history of music, Viotti's name is still too little known.

Many of us are trying to make Viotti's music known, but also that of Giovanni Battista Somis, founder of the Piedmontese violin school, and that of Gaetano Pugnani. Pugnani, in particular, was a pupil of Arcangelo Corelli and also played an important role in the formation of the French violin school because among his pupils, in addition to Viotti, were Jean Marie Leclair, considered the progenitor of the French school, and Felice Giardini, who was very active in England. Viotti's importance was considerable, however, and at present it is not sufficiently valued because he was somewhat forgotten during the nineteenth century. In this Bicentennial year the 26th Viotti Festival is being held in Vercelli, thanks to the efforts of violinist Guido Rimonda and the Camerata Ducale Orchestra. Several interesting performances can also be found here on KZbin.

На обложке ролика " Viotti: Violin Concert No. 22 & Cherubini Symphony in D major" помещена картина французского художника Жака-Луи Давида - Jacques-Louis David(1748-1825) под названием "Портрет Мадам де Верниньяк"-"Portrait of Madame de Verninac". 1799.

I had to look up Massimo Quarti since I had never heard of him. But the sensational playing made me curious. What a great artist. He just never loses the poignance that sets this concerto apart from other Viotti creations. then I listened to some Paganini he had recorded. Amazing! He plays magnificently. I gather he is a conductor so perhaps that is why I have never heard of him. My loss!

I'm sorry to say I wasn't so familiar with Viotti. Thanks again to this channel for sharing his wonderful music! The candenza in that first movement is so wonderful. Does anyone know if this is his cadenza?
@poncione8 ай бұрын
