Vipp Shelter tiny prefab as precise industrial-era appliance

The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug-and-play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape.
VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates.
The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.”

Can only imagine how amazing the rainy season is there, the trees filled with morning dew, cold light fog, being able to watch the rain fall through those windows and that sky light and the sounds of the birds when the rain stops. To live in the forest would be my dream come true.

And then imagine the glass walls covered in bird poo, dirt and loose leaves. So you think to yourself, I'll deal with the cleaning tomorrow. So it continues until one day the house looks like a cat litter box from the outside.

This is a very unique design for a very specific clientele that is looking for a very unique experience. I doubt the majority of people would buy this as a home, but for the unique way you can experience nature. So in essence, someone rich that lives in the city and is looking for a place to retreat into nature.

Antonia Vie Exactly! Why people comment with outrge and cursing because of the price ~ that sense of thwarted entitlement seething just under the surface. Unable to conceive concepts because they are obsessed with money. I can't afford this , but I get the concept , and I'd love to have one! I can dream!

Yes- however one must be fully able bodied, strong and average sized to manage well in that house. Unfortunately as junk food tastes take over many wouldn't be comfortable there. It's not for everyone, but some of us can dream. And, yes, such detailed features ARE expensive. I get sticker shock every time I look at quality things....Those glass doors alone must be over $100K!

Antonia, a word from a writer: ditch the word "very". With it, you lose credibility, both as a person and as a writer. Otherwise, I get your drift but disagree that anyone would want to live in that gunmetal-gray, lifeless box for very long, including its creator.

This is like the budget non-innovative version of the Apple-dudes home in Sonoma Cal. Of you like this search for THAT house on YT. It’s also not a ”product” as this guy keeps saying. It’s an original home they built for themselves the premise being a specific piece pf property.

*+Kirsten Dirksen* This just popped up in my 'feed' after all these years and it has been a pleasure to revisit this fabulous dwelling. It may not be to everyone's taste and I am not usually one to be into monocolour schemes. However, this is so thoughtfully constructed, so mindfully put together that it is definitely on my top ten of favorite structures. I won't list all the ways it ticks the boxes. You've already shown that. It just pleases me that after 3.5 years, I am still impressed by it. And clearly it has been of interest to close to six million others so maybe there is hope for others. Just so long as we don't forget that those that constantly find ways to accrue excessive amounts of cash (obviously off those that the system takes it from) should find ways to find housing solutions for those that such a structure would be more than enough for many. Bravo to the designers as well!

It's stunning. This is my favorite prefab. Costly, yes, but it's glorious. I love that they send their own crew to install it anywhere in the world, so no need to find locals. You just have to have the site prepared and rent a crane. Installation is done in 3-5 days. Have to add 12% to cost to have it delivered to the east coast of the USA.

It's 2019, four years after the unveiling of the VIPP Shelter and I have not been able to banish my thoughts about this home to the rubbish bin. It's always there, relentlessly popping up in head at the most unexpected moments. And when I binge watching HGTV I find myself comparing what I see before me to the VIPP Shelter. Most homes are sloppily designed. In contrast, the VIPP Shelter is like a razor. It's sharp, focused, a singularly perfect object. The VIPP Shelter is more akin to a Ferrari than a home... oh, ye doth protest too much. When you look at a Rothko don't say that it's not a Vermeer. The VIPP Shelter is a new kind of masterpiece. It needs nothing more.

Let's have a look at the sliding glass doors. They are closed now. I'm going to open them. Now I'm opening them. See how they slide along the rails. Done. Now the doors are open. See how they are open. Beautiful. In the surroundings. Wind is coming in. Because the glass doors are now open. Nature is outside is inside is nature. Enough nature. Now I'm going to close the sliding doors again. Note, how they slide. Beautifully. I'm starting to close them now. See, they are sliding along the rails just like we planned to. Because we are architects but we are not, we are designers, so we have a similar but different mindset. Did I mention how beautiful the doors are? And they are heavy too. They are closed now. So I open them again. Opening, sliding, feeling,... See, did you film this? I will show once more. What to do in the woods all weekend long? Sleeping, reading, burning, closing, sliding, feeling, cleaning many many square metres of glass windows. Let's open them again. See, still working, working out, sliding huge heavy glass door windows in the prefab industrial design cabin in the woods. ;)

SUPER COOL! My wife is really into the tiny homes, whereas I'm more into the small, container homes, both made to our specifications. I'm hoping that we can get something this cool built when we're financially ready, though we would never, EVER spend $600,000 on a house. That's ridiculous. Something similar to this could be done for under $200K and I'd be just as happy with it.

Anyone who has lived in a heavily wooded area can see the drawbacks of this shipping container house. No locks on the doors? But I guess you don't need to secure you're stuff while out in the woods.Trees drop stuff all the time, not just in the Fall. The roof and skylights are going to be covered with twigs, branches and leaves, not to mention bird crap and bugs. You'll need to be constantly cleaning up there. Opening up to enjoy nature is nice on the drawing board, but there is way more to nature than a breeze. Insects, birds and mammals large and small inhabit the woods, all looking for shelter. They're going to love this place. Climbing the boulder staircase is going to be so much fun, especially in the rain or snow or when they're icy, especially with no railing. And who could live in what amounts to an exhibition at a zoo? No window coverings? At least install the glass that turns opaque when an electrical charge is put to it. They broke rule number one: form follows function.

Complaining about people being able to look inside of this space is ridiculous. What do you have to hide? Don't buy it then! You complain about the material used on the walls. But wool has self cleaning properties. Can you afford this house anyway? Didn't think so! The Sky lights will be full of bird poop and leaves? Didn't you see that the ceiling was easily accessible? Do you seriously thing someone that has half a million to spend on a design house has your worries? A lock at the door? Really? That is your worry when you see this house?

+FoodOfTheGods Shipping containers seem really cool, but are functionally a poor choice for a living area. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter, low ceiling height and very narrow. Take a pic when the thing is done and everyone always goes, Wow!

1Howdy1 While I agree that living in a plain shipping container might be photogenic but highly ineffective, you need to insulate them. Good insulation and layering makes them perfectly fine to use them as a living space. Not to mention the minimal costs of doing so.

This Bauhaus mentality and attention to detail and "mechanical" attention had me in tears. Truly gifted architecture is an art that people in the US feel has been lost since Frank Loyd Write, but that is ridiculous. I am building a 2.1336 meter x 4.2672 meter trailer camper and mobile office. Kirsten and her family inspired me to make some very theoretical decisions in my materiel choices and functional understanding of the frame of the camera for each view... which is the idea of doing a mobile office in the first place... Right? Thank you.

I really like the concept, and your suggestions would be great options if this is going to be their market. Many are discussing the pricing of the unit. Sweden's costs for everything are far more expensive, but for people that are Scandinavia are aware that outside of Northern Europe you could be looking at lower costs. Redesigning the interior has many challenges, like the noise dampening, the costs for motorising the glass windows of that weight, and your suggested metal shutters could detract from the clean lines that they have achieved. Screens are quite common in America, but you do not see this in homes outside of North America. These screens also have some setbacks due to the risks of running into them when it is new. That could a serious health and safety risk. Their appearance would make the clean link to the outside and compromise its appearance. The same would apply to the metal shutters.I have seen some higher grade barriers that you are suggesting, but these would not only diminish the space but would take away from the style and potentially add a considerable cost factor for this unit. They have some great ideas from this design, but I agree that there might be some options to personalise your unit. Environmental laws in Scandinavia are far more restrictive in nature, so expanding the plumbing and water usage could be prohibited, especially when you are considering this type of dwelling so close to the lake. Outside of Scandinavia Environmental Laws are far less stringent, so these good suggestions could be more feasible in places like America where environmental restrictions have been eliminated. These compromises could result in the loss of safely enjoying your lake. I would take all of these issues into account and would likely refuse to build something of that nature in countries with lowered health and safety standards.

I love all of the people bitching on here about the price. This is a custom designed house by VIPP. Sure you could build something similar for less. I mean I could build a couch out of a number of pallets that "work just as well as" a $12k couch. That's not the point. Is this out of reach of most people? sure, but it's not meant to be for the masses. I may have clutched my pearls for a split second when I saw the price but realized immediately that I'm not in this market. This is a Tesla not a Kia. Also, once you've mastered more than one language you can comment on the "sunset in the morning".

do not even compare this to a Tesla, least you can have fun in a Tesla, this was the worst house or building ever created...ever see the dystopian movie "Equilibrium" that is the guys house he built...you sound like a right plonker with "once you have mastered more then one language bla bla bla"I have four starting my fifth and work in construction as engineer...this guy is dead inside, everything black and grey and cold mechanical look to it,not joking a fucking submarine or prison cell is a happier looking place then inside that coffin with a window, and the bullshit talk about its construction..guys build million times better then that for fraction of the price...that thing is depression in a box.

when building a house or structure 99% of people rich or not count in cost,no building is cheap which is why people factor in cost...how dare you say people are ignorant because of this, this designer did nothing new,no new concepts, nothing mind blowing..he babbles on about being "connected to nature" in lay mans term this means lots of glass,he built a box with glass and expensive fittings and fixtures, give me or any of the builders around the world the same budget and we would blow your mind, this guy is using a brand name and firing the word custom around like we should be in awe of this house..a dark depressing box he built and forget cost,it is dull and bland inside, the bad guys house in Blade Runner comes to mind, dystopian style..99% of people want a warm friendly inviting place to call home and this is not, that is why people in the comments are shocked at this house and its price...I work as engineer in construction for past 30 years and can not see where the money went, this has to be one of the coldest dark depressing houses I have ever seen and it is you who are closed minded to think people are stupid or ignorant...more like people have their heads screwed on and do not fall for this "designer" bullshit, people who have an idea about construction and forget the look of it can not see where the money went.He is what we call in the construction industry a "chancer"..would not like to see him design and build a 4 bedroom two storey house, yes that will be 7500000000000 euro and then you look across at the house next door....wake the fuck up and stop calling people ignorant when in fact they are smart enough to see this is not value for money Vipp designed or not...guy is deluded, seen house like this built for 80k and nicer much much nicer, sorry if most people are not stupid or gullible and do not agree with you but this is fact of life..your comment makes you sound like the ignorant one..love to see the cost breakdown on this house..bet you would change your mind then...the man is deluded..even other designers would raise a eyebrow to what he thinks this is worth...it always always always comes to cost and if money is no object he would not get one home built as a designer that is for sure.

You could build a nice granny flat like this for 50-80K. The problem here is the 4 letter word VIPP & the fact that it is completely furnished by them, their modern mass-produced version of that 1939 8 gallon trash can is $469 dollars. So you can only imagine what all the other "one off" shelter pieces cost from them...

From the steps of rock to the top features of off grid austerity it is a beautifully innovative design. With the location being remote, your intuition is grand to understand the mechanical process is more important than being technological and electronic controlled. These type systems would fail in an emergency. The privacy of the bedroom is awesome in contrast to the open living area. Quite intuitive to have felt panels for acoustics. Would be a nice place to live.

It's like the architect set out to design a layout specifically to frustrate and add daily annoyance to the residents. Everything about this design screams person who has never themselves spent substantial time living in a place like this. The entry hallway is a cacophony of daily frustrations, the bathroom door blocks the front door when opening so it's easy to knock the groceries out of someone's hands as they come in, the loft ladder being in a tiny hallway that you need to go through to get to the bathroom, the stove and bed area being right off of that space means it will be covered in tracked in debris being miserable to actually sit in, and be inefficient to heat on top of that. And that's just the entry way.

I like nearly everything about it (especially the "look" of it - the clean, modern lines) ... *except* for the sleeping lofts. This is perfectly Jim-dandy for millennials, but once one reaches middle age, night time trips to the toilet become more frequent. Climbing and descending a ladder two or three times a night does not appeal. And can you imagine changing the sheets -- without being able to walk around the bed? You'd have to lift the mattress while you're sitting on it in order to get the sheets under the mattress edges. I think this could easily be reworked to make it more senior-friendly.

@Ole Nielson exactly my thoughts as I watched it! I am in my fourties, and I have a back problem, normally no problem, but if I have some back nerve hurting me, this is gonna be like hell climbing up this latter.
