I make good money and somehow ended up $20k in credit card debt due to impulse shopping. If I wanted something I bought it. I was also somewhat of a hoarder so to speak. If 1 of something was good, 10 was better. I finally decided I didn’t want to be a slave to the credit card companies anymore. I created a budget (never had one before) and started living on the bare minimum in order to throw all my money at my debt. I’m currently on track to be paid off by October 2024. I still feel sick thinking about all the interest I paid. I know how daunting it can feel when you just don’t see the progress but just keep chipping away. You can do it!

Okay. take a deep breath. I am a personal finance nerd and I want you to calculate how much your 9-5 makes a year. If you are close to the amount you owe on student loans a year, you are doing damn good. It is the credit cards that are making you feel like you have a ton of bills, then add on living expenses it feels like a pinch. Instead of thinking like this I cannot do this or that, I deserve this thing or that thing. Think of it as I am going to go to work, eat very simple at home, take care of the pup, and enjoy the simple things in life. A cup of coffee made at home with the cheapest coffee you can find. I am going to enjoy my eggs on toast with a side salad for bunch and dinner is going to be some slow cooked chicken with black beans, veggies over rice. You can do this. And even if you have to work at the grocery store on Sundays to earn a bit more YOU CAN DO THIS. The goal is to stop using the credit cards, pay off of the credit cards then deal with the student loans.

It took a long time for me to get around the mindset that I was broke, and had to work a lot and put a lot towards my debt. I wasn't taught my parents finance, but I learned some things in my journey that helped. I keep a journal and read as much as I could budget books for free. You can do it it just takes lots of discipline and I had to stop school so I could pay back what I had. After you get out , your mindset changes and I am never going into debt. Everyone got my money and I was so upset, I could have done so much with what I have had and made, but lesson learned. I am 40 myself and finally learned my lesson. The way we talk to ourselves matters. When we continue to express regrets for decisions we made, it keeps us stuck in cement. No one can move forward by standing in the past. Many of us have a debt story. We know what it takes to get rid of debt and so do you. If you're filming in your apartment, you aren't broke. Your apartment looks specious and well furnished and you're warm and comfortable. However, no matter how comfortable your apartment, debt is stressful. You have debt because you chose to take it on. It no longer matters what you didn't know, or weren't told; your life is "here" now and your future is in front of you. You can retire your debt as quickly as possible, if you choose. You're the boss - how many changes and which you are willing to make to retire your debt is up to you. There are hundreds of videos by people in debt on YT. Some are more serious than others. They tell their story, walk through their monthly budgets and talk about their debt. One I like is "mistakes were made". You might like the budget sheets she uses and how diligent and determined they are. You CAN do it!

I wrote this saying for a charity movie in my retirement 5 years ago. " LIFE IS MESSY AND PEOPLE ARE COMPLICTED." We have to accept that life never stays good or bad forever. We get a coldor flue, our job is downsized, our relatives cause us problems and the car acts up too. even at age 65 with all the financial issues are looking good the health declines and complications arise with medical issues. Enjoy the sunny days because life will consistently blow a sorm your way.

The last 2 years for me have absolutely sucked financially. At the end of 2021 I had a pretty decent amount in checking & savings, well in 2022 I took a job offer in another state that turned out to be fraudulent costing me to lose thousands & thousands of dollars from moving expenses & car repairs that came about because of the move, I still have yet to recover from it. I tried to sue the company involved with no luck, I was lucky on one hand because I was able to go back to my old job, what sucks about that though is that my old job is in Southern California where the cost of living is pretty much you need to make at least $250k annually to live comfortably. America is a place right now that just seems to be forcing everyone into deep debt like your being thrown into the deep part of the pacific ocean with no life jacket...

@@boatsie I don’t think so. I think if they had given me a solid foundation, would I make mistake still, yes I’m human but I think it would’ve given us an open path to have conversations with each other where I could run financial decisions, especially big ones I was gonna make with them and I would feel comfortable to not be judged and they are just providing input out of love and respect. But because there was never any conversations had as a parent to a child/teenager. There’s never been an open door or an open path to have these conversations with them so it’s led to me having to make a lot of choices in the moment due to circumstances that I’ve been in because of my divorce because I’m a single mom because I’ve had to figure it out on my own since I’ve been 18. I’m not coming on the Internet, saying I’m perfect because I’m far from perfect. But I do think that it would be nice to have an open line of communication. Unfortunately, my parents have always judged me and made me feel like the black sheep because I’m a teen mom because I had my kids at wedlock and made a lot of stupid decisions which I talked about in my recent video trying to overcome being the black sheep trying to overcome being the outsider of my immediate family. Instead, I should’ve waited until I was mature to make a lot of the financial choices that I made because they would’ve come from a place that I need to do this for me, because I want the approval of people that I’ll probably never get the approval of

That’s because most people with financial struggles were not raised to have financial discipline by their parents. Almost everything you do as an adult has something to do with the way you were raised After all, it is your parents’ responsibility to teach you all the things you need to survive and thrive in this world. If you had terrible parents (or no parents at all) of course you’re going to struggle most of your life because instead of learning and being guided a mentor, you now have to learn everything the hard way.

The thing is you can combine all your debt's into a one payment plan. I have calculated that over ten years you can pay, each month, only around $810.53 a month. You will have to work your backside off, but, you will get there. Cut your credit card up while you are in the bank to sort out your finances. Only take out cash or pay with a debt card. You have to be accountable for your finances. Go to your bank NOW to sort out your finances, NOW!

The interest on credit cards these days are ridiculous.Basically 30%. Most people don't realize how much interest they are paying. I purchased a $2k TV on a Best Buy credit card. The deal was no interest for the first 24 months. If I didn't pay off the $2k in 24 months the lump sum interest would be $700. I think it's a good deal as long as you pay it off on time. Seeing the interest as a lump sum can motivate you to pay it off faster.

You can't be that broke if you have a roof over your head! I live in my SUV (by choice) because I am paying off my student loans. My education got me to where I am today with a job that pays me well over 6-figures (combined $200k), but I am in debt and currently paying that off. I am single and don't have any credit card debts, other than my car payments and student loans. You are probably thinking if I make $200K per annum, why I am living in my SUV? Well, as a travel nurse, I bounce from place to place, so having a permanent residence wouldn't make sense in my case. My student loan is like the sword of Damocles hanging over my head, and if I don't keep up with my payments, my credit may be at risk. I didn't qualify for the student loan forgiveness, but then again, I don't care --- I only have $50k remaining and I make $5k payments a month. I have a bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston Univ and MCPHS. I work as a travel nurse and have busted my butt to get where I am today, and all you can do is make a video and complain about drowning in debt! Colleges/Universities like University of Phoenix is a school for profit, and not sure if those types of "online" school can really help a student get far, in terms of a career path. First rule of holes: if you are in one, stop digging. Secondly, get to work! Get 3 jobs if you have to. I currently work 2 jobs as a nurse and I pick up as much OT as I can. Sorry for sounding mean, but our country is so broken and if Tangerine gets back into the white house, it will be a disaster. I hope you figure things out on your end! Good luck!

Everyone shouts Dave Ramsey but I read Mary Hunts debt proof living before I ever heard of him. Being your an accountant of sorts I think you’ll love her. The book is pretty cheap on eBay.

Be VERY leary of any dental or medical care in Mexico...unless it's an emergency, I would strongly recommend that put off that trip or cancel it.

Balance transfer is the best option. You pay a 3% fee to have 12-21 months of 0% interest. Look at cards on the market.

Oh trust, I am paying off my credit cards so that way I can save up that money that I was using to pay those off to file bankruptcy on my student loans or at least see if I can if I can’t then we’ll start paying on the student loans

I only know one person whose college degree actually turned them into a million bucks and he chose dentistry. I know more people with millions of dollars that didn’t go to four year institutions. College for most people is a sham if you don’t have legit definitive plan.

Only a few minutes in and all I’m hearing is a lot of excuses. “Frontal lobe wasn’t developed, I was basically a single mom, I was tricked into college and didn’t understand what it meant,” and the beginning when you said “I can’t blame my parents anymore” like you’re 42? You’ve been an adult for 24 years, you can’t blame them for your own adult decisions. All I’m hearing is a lot of shifting the blame to anyone or anything besides yourself.

Throw your credit cards in the trash bin today, start paying off the most expensive one... Even if your budget can only allow to pay 100 or 200 dollars a month on the debt, at least you know it's going down. But preferably do it quicker, every day you spend with these debts you are paying the credit card companies interest on your loans. And if you're really hardcore and determined, find someone to take care of the dog while you take care of yourself and your finances, move to a smaller apartment, if possible get a 2nd job and make a really strict budget for food. If you can do all that, this will be a pretty quick journey out of debt! Wish you luck.
