The cool thing about Virgil is that he is more of a conceptual artist rather than a traditional designer ...he references Duchamp and Rauschenberg constantly and understands where fashion has merged with art , architecture , music , woven into contemporary culture . The man is supremely gifted and sophisticated which explains his success ....

thats cool, but the sad part of it is that to design clothes you need to know how to design, fashion is not just imagination, fashion it´s about structure, technique, and real knowledge of all that surrounds the creations of clothing, from fabrics to patterns, something that he doesn´t have, yes it´s necessary to be creative , but it´s also necessary to know about what you are doing, and with this collection he showed the world8 that he doesn´t know about fashion other thing than drawing

I have worked for 30 years for some of the top fashion houses dating back from 1984 ( Burberry , Armani , Hermes , Luigi Borelli etc with a historical perspective of what it all means . With a all due respect , you underestimate or simply omit the elements by which he is enjoying a great deal of success and what makes him someone to watch , no doubt a guy who's influential . A few great musicians were unable to read sheet music properly but that was never considered a handicap nor diminish the music they composed

I have broken free of interpreting fashion in its current direction where a lot of it feels detached from the past and quite frankly , I never said Abloh presents the chops of a Raf Simons ( perhaps the last true innovative designer left ) when we talk about pure creativity in making new clothes ...the elements you saw on the runway are basically for press and to generate " buzz" , he had to bring his DNA into a very stuffy French house . I can guarantee you the more traditional elements of Louis V are still being made for their stores . But I sense there he is a generational shift going on at this moment . We can debate the creativity involved , which is a separate issue . The numbers will forecast how successful his appointment turns out to be

yvan guillaume Raf Simon is the last true innovative designer left? Have you seen some of these Japanese and Chinese designers as of recent? I find it hard to believe that there will be a cultural shift. Street style has been a thing for years and years now, and it’s clearly incorporated in Abloh’s work. The problem is that American street style is constantly changing and relates itself too closely to fads. I think the only thing strengthening brands like Off-White currently is the connection between rappers (seen as the new celebrities) and the clothes they wear (very often Off-White). We’ll see what happens, though. I think Abloh’s LV collection offers something fresh, it just depends on whether the people get tired of the style or not (which I predict they will, unless Virgil Abloh can be constantly contemporary in following current trends or making the next best thing).

Fuck who he references. Lets leave the pretentiousness and pseudo- intellectualism at the gate. The man's ''designs'' are complete hacks of past street brands with a bloated price tag, and faux counter culture aesthetics; spoon-fed to self proclaimed fashion gurus willing to pay for Kanye West's friend's merchandise.

It must be such an honour to work with such a calm beautiful person inside and out, delicately spoken, diligent, conceptual, creative, iconic, and a living legend who blesses brands with his obscure references and sophisticated silhouettes and colour palettes, Virgil sets trends other brands follow and has redesigned Nike silhouettes with his classic 10, he enhances any brand he works with as a valuable asset

This is really no different from the process of Marc Jacobs highlighted in the documentary Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton (2007) and that of Virgil. A “designer” is adept at translating a vision onto a body of work. Marc was great at adapting references/themes and then integrating them into the collections both at Vuitton and his own namesake. @ 17:20 Marc “refreshes” an old sweater . One only needs to study his works with collaborators such as Sprouse (2001), Murakami (2003), Fleury (2006), R.Prince (2008), and Yayoi Kusama (2012) to realize that they rely heavily on defacement, cut & paste, and layering methods over the original LV monogram. It should also be hinted that Richard Prince is an "appropriation" artist. Virgil really is no different. In fashion, if it sells then you are “in” and the timing seems to have really worked out well for his transition.

When you look at it as clothing, yeah it is overrated. You have to look at what he makes as wearable art. His work with quotation marks was flipping the fashion industry on its head and rethinking these wearable pieces.
