I am not a player of the drums. Watching Virgil makes me really wish I was, so I could FULLY appreciate his skill. What a monster!

I played cello in a pit orchestra for a season of West Side Story in Melbourne around 40 years ago and knew he was going to go far. The 'monster' in the making, Mr Rhythm, was in the pit at every performance holding the orchestra together under the baton of Dobbs Franks. I was mesmerised being so close to the percussion section in such a cramped space. My ears suffered a bit, but it was well it!

Trust me, it would just frustrate you. It's just depressing how much beyond his skills really are.

I play drums and can assure you he’s pretty good

Not only has he already written the History of the Drum and the History of the Double Pedal here, but he then continued a life of Super Complex Rhythmic Studies up to the present day. He explained very rightly that he is not interested in demonstrating already demonstrated skills, but always aiming for the next ones. He explained very rightly that deciding to play the drums never existed, he was born like that, he was genetically captured by it. 👽🚀🥁 I started playing the drums in around 2002, I had no skills, but I had such a genetic predisposition that seeing one of his videos, I immediately understood that he was above anyone. He was my ultimate inspiration, because it was extremely special to see with my own eyes that there was a drummer in the world who was doing exactly what I instinctively thought should be done on the drums. My instincts thought I should play the way I had in mind, I saw him, and he existed in the world and did just what my head imagined. the amazement of the mental connection is indescribable in words, my imagination already existed and his name was Virgil Donati. I was very young and incompetent, I didn't know if my imagination of how I wanted to sound was stupid. Virgilio Donati existed, he already did what I imagined, and was considered innovation and enormous value. I felt understood, valued and that I was not alone, there was a man who understood me and was considered a giant, my idea existed in the world and was a value. I will never be able to THANK him enough ⭐

I was following ok in my head until it melted at 4:18 and if that wasn't enough the damn heart attack inducing sequence from 4:25 on directly afterwards is inhuman. Too keep that speed over those insane distances from right to left to up top and down...godlike. I really doubt unless you spent a year or two practicing that exact part, anyone else on earth could do it that smoothly. Not even Vinnie Coluita and he is a god himself.
