Just curious. For everyone complaining about how 'overly complicated' this music is, do you actually know how Planet X was created? Derek Sherinian quite literally wanted to create the most intense instrumental band he could. "When I started Planet X, I had one goal: to start the sickest instrumental band in the world. I wanted to find musicans that played their instruments so fiercely, it would strike fear in the hearts of other musicians when they played" A.k.a, let's get people who know their instrument like the back of their hand, and let's make the most overly complicated music we can. Why? Because they can. So if you're complaining, go listen to something else. This was meant to be confusing and over the top. Because for them, it's a challenge, and it's fun as hell to see what they can come up with.

Wesley Ostrander And it was intended to entertain people are are musically astute and competent. Its mentally stimulating. Planet X is our musicians band for those theory geeks such as myself. Great musicians; great band.

trying to explain Virgil to a non-musician is like trying to explain the theory of quantum relativity to an infant.

You are aware that anyone who can explain quantum relativity to an expert immediately qualifies for immortality and a dozen of Nobel prizes? Creating that theory is the ultimate goal of fundamental theoretical physics (which by definition is the simplest and most basic branch of physics).

I met Virgil and Allan Holdsworth after a gig at Harlow's in Sacramento a couple of years back. Had a beer with them and a couple of "Bucket List" pictures with them both. Virgil is one nicest guys I've ever met and one of the finest drummers I've ever seen. I have seen many of the "worlds best" drummers over the past 40 years including Bruford, Cobham, Bozio, and many more. I love seeing the posts about the music being too "complex". Funny they said the same thing about King Crimson 45 years ago!! I don't remember anyone dancing in the 70's when King Crimson played "Red" or "Starless"either!!For those of you feeling the need to "dance" or "shake your butts" may I suggest you check out some Earth, Wind and Fire or Bad Company for your 4/4 fix!!

I wish I was at that gig!! I stay in the East Bay and had no clue about it, damn! That's cool you got the pics and a chat. Also met Virgil Donati at a drum clinic and he was really cool.

I used to go see Vigil play every Tuesday night in both Loose Change and Hans Valen in Melbourne way back in 1990-92.. this guy blew us Aussies away then... Hope he gets the DT gig... he deserves it... and more...

Quantum is probably my most favorite album period.Can't tell you how man times I've listened to it since it came out.
@shiritzhaki53339 жыл бұрын
people always talk about his technique (speed and stuff) but i find his level of musical education and fast perception of complicated pieces far more impressive
@2204JCM6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for me this is very high art. Period. Nothing “ceriberal” or “Mathmatical” about it. Just magical music from both a performance perspective and a compositional one too. Vigils feel alone is worth it. But all the muscians are killing it.

This is not about comparing drummers. Virgil is in a level of drumming that, i think, not other drummer have ever reached. He is not inly extremely technical, fast and grooving, but also hace a positronic brain. He can play two diferrent rudiments in left and right side.... He is simply the God of the drummers.
