How sweet is Dave-id afterwards, giving gifts to the host and audience members? 💕 👏🙌

Re Dave-ID, was that just his persona or did he actually have a disability? And if so, did he ham it up, at risk of being accused of being a bad role model?

@@Grithron2 Dave-id has Cerebral Palsy! I don't think he is being anything but himself here! When my friend and I saw them at the Lyceum in November 83, we went early afternoon to try and watch the sound check. That turned out to be a great move as we not only got to sit and watch, we got talking to them. Their manager, John Lay, asked if I would help out by being part of the opening act as the "laughing police man". Because of my height..6ft 5" I was ideal. I had to wear a massive laughing police man head and carry a birthday cake as I walked on stage with Gavin and Guggi either side, linking arms with me. I then put the cake on a table and bowed to the audience, then to the two of them. Wow... It was fantastic! Back to the sound check..We were speaking to Dave-id for a long time, asking all sorts of questions about Virgin Prunes live tracks where Dave-id was singing and then giving flowers to audience members...then grabbing them back! He was a really lovely guy. His cerebral palsy didn't stop him from being a valued member of the band. His actions on the TV show seemed absolutely genuine. That's how he was when we met him. Charming, fun and willing to be open to us as fans of the band. That night will never be forgotten by me. 👌 💕

I would think that it was a truly genuine gesture from Dave -id I never knew that he had cerebral palsy . There is footage on KZbin of them going into an old people home ( somewhere in Europe ) and having fun singing and dancing with the people , some of the old folk looked very dubious about it all to begin with , but the Prunes soon got them all laughing , ok , it perhaps is a bit of publicity thing , but I'm totally convinced it was something that they were doing to brighten up people's lives ! I've always loved the Virgin Prunes ! I can't hear a bad word against them !

not surprising, since this was recorded in1979.... and there wasn't a record company to pay for studio sessions for the 'album version' until 1982. At least we had Colin Newman from WIRE to produce the 'album version." Notice how the 1982 Virgin Prunes "album version" of this song sounds so similar to the sonic qualities of WIRE's 1987 album "The Ideal Copy" five years after the Virgin Prunes' "album version" of this song.
@2lefThumbs
@2lefThumbs 2 жыл бұрын
@@RaBob maybe, but what impressed me more was the power/passion that both vocalists showed, not sure that that could be shown on vinyl, nor the nuance of the background tableau. I missed out on seeing the Virgin Prunes in I (think ) 1985, but my flatmates infected me with the album sounds👍👍 I've never heard of WIRE until now, but tbf, their copy is far from ideal🤣 sounds like a mishmash of early Human League, Japan, midlife OMD and Depeche mode 6 years after they had a uk hit [edit, unlike what I've heard from the Virgin Prunes, all of which is thoroughly original (or as original as muaic can be)

More than 40 years after this TV program was made, newb millenial "death rockers" will argue that The Cure, and Bauhaus, and Sisters Of Mercy "aren't really death rock," but none of them will even know about or mention VIRGIN PRUNES.

Assolutamente fantastici e sottovalutati.

Believe it or not, U2 were the direct outcome of Virgin Prunes - both were closely linked years prior as "The Lypton Village", with two radically different bands each at their side of the (rock) spectrum. The boy on U2's earlier album/single record sleeves is Guggi's younger brother.

In a parallel universe, this band wrought immense societal change - "consciousness-raising" shouldn't even begin to cover a band which is like an amalgam of P.I.L, Bauhaus, Throbbing Gristle, the Firesign Theater and Kukl. And sadly it doesn't, because they slipped under everyone's radar and continue to do so (with the catalogue unavailable through the normal channels).
@salubrious
@salubrious 4 жыл бұрын
@Grithron2 That's not quite true now to be honest, is it? The Prunes certainly did not slip under everyone's radar and would have been a pretty well known band to anyone in the know back in the day / with their finger on the pulse. Admittedly they weren't a 'successful' act in terms of record sales or anything like that but sure when was that ever a real guide to anything worthwhile in the music world? All of their material is still pretty much available to buy online.
