Oh, wow, that's a great view at 12:25. There are some articles online about Ottie. It is believed that he fell asleep there in freezing rain, which became an ice storm, and never woke up. His remains were preserved through the winter thanks to repeated snowfall, and then were discovered by a hunter's dog in the spring.

Matt's Creek shelter was the very first AT shelter I ever stayed at in 1979. Years before they moved it to the present location. Papa Muskrat

Brother, it’s a pity we didn’t connect on the logistics. I would have loved to do the section you are tackling next with you. My daughter and I did that section a couple years ago (Pedlar River to 60).

Please opt to not hike during the afternoons this week. Heat exhaustion is real regardless of age or fitness level. Maybe try night hiking for a change.
