Randy California said they came to ST. Louis to rock and didn't care if the (radio station) ever played their song again..they are going to ROCK! WOW! If U were there U saw history baby!! I too saw Spirit live in 1969 in Worcester MA at the Worcester Auditorium. They were the supporting act for Canned Heat. The opening act that evening was an early J. Geils band without Peter Wolf. J Geils played a Gold top Les Paul and clearly was a master of the Blues Genre as was Magic Dick on Harp. Spirit played next. Basically they played all the songs from their first Spirit "face" album. "Fresh Garbage" "Uncle Jack" "Mechanical World" and their single “I Got a line on You” they were very well rehearsed and were really amazing live. They played with conviction and had an amazing set. -Canned Heat wasn’t there yet and since they were so late in arriving, Spirit actually came back on and played their second album. So imagine: Spirit comes out again. Randy starts off with his echoplex trick of setting it to max speed setting with infinite echo’s then slowed down to the familiar opening: DUH DAH DAH DUH DAH (scratchy, scatchy, scratched, guitar)..Wow! it’s the intro to "It's all the Same" The opening song of their yet to be released second album. The Family that Plays Together. (Unbelievable!!) The band went on to play pretty much all of the as yet to be released second album. They were awesome! So great and so well received. Indeed they were! Canned Heat finally showed. They too played an amazing set and all their songs too. "Going up the Country", "On the Road Again", Refried Boogie", ”Let’s Work together", pretty much all of them were played. They were a great live band and played an amazing set too. -What a show! Worcester, MA at the time was incredible for the bands we got to see, and the local scene was also thriving. Hendrix, BB King, Albert King, Procol Harum, Grateful Dead to name a few who played at Clark University. The Yardbirds, The Rascals, Sam the Sham, Eric Burdon and The Animals and many many more played at the Comic Strip on Main street. The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Byrds and many more played at the Worcester Auditorium. The list of great bands and big acts who came to Worcester to play was never ending those days. It was also the same with so many local bands. They were everywhere and really great. At the Spirit concert, -My band was "The Haze" (from Worcester) and we all went. We were popular in the area then. To say we were big Spirit fans is an understatement. We were huge Spirit fans. We covered "I Got a Line on You" "Mechanical World" and "1984" in our setlist! Another tidbit for Wormtown fans: The Haze were the last band to play at the Comic Strip on Main street! What an honor..Great times! Anyhow..Spirit really was and is still so underated. They totally deserve to be inducted into the R&R Hall of fame RIGHT?? Ask Lou Adler I bet he would agree..Peace..

I graduated from High School in S. Calif. and then went "back east" to college at Illinois State University. I remember " Spirit" posters with the iconic pose of Ed Cassidy, bald dome and all, on the drum kit posted all over campus ..Priceless ! My junior/ senior years [69] were these posters placed] when they came to play the midwest. I saw the same posters up at UW Madison Wisc.and U of Ill. Champaign Ill , They had a fierce loyal following all accross the midwest and west coast.We loved them ! Randy , the guitar virtuoso and Ed Cassidy with his double base kit " snare" drums ! No better drummer around ! They were great !...and so underrated.I am age 72 and still listen to " Spirit ". What great memories...you all should have been there !!! 60's music exploded with creative fire and I have never seen anything like it since !!! ..RIP Randy and Ed !

Sprit played at 3am Sunday morning at the Palm Beach Rock Festival 1969. They followed Johnny Winter on stage with Janis. Half the crowd was asleep. I will never forget the blue lights reflecting off Ed Cassidy's dome. He played like -- and looked like -- a Mad Robot. Could have been the drugs. They ended a great set with this song and anyone who was awake was up and dancing. For me, this song should be memorialized in the R&R Hall of Fame as the ultimate frat party set-ender. A classic. Back when I was in Junior High School, back in '71 and '72, and going to the school dances, when the copy bands played this song it always got EVERYONE on the dance floor. It was a favorite, and a great song for those early adolescent dances, since even the spazzoids like me that couldn't dance well could have a good time; it was too crowded for anyone to notice those that couldn't dance well so you could cut loose and not worry about embarrassing yourself. Such a great, timeless song - really captures the spirit of the young heart. One of the great songs of Rock 'n Roll history, for sure. Randy California was such a great songwriter and guitar player - should be more famous. RIP Randy - died drowning, rescuing and saving his son's life.

I was a college radio dj at the University of Missouri and had been working at KCOU about a year when Spirit came to play Columbia. The club owner called and asked if we'd like to have someone from the band come down and do a promo for the show. Sure! The whole band showed up. Ed and Randy were so nice, I said "Why don't you take over the show? Pick songs-I'll play them and we can talk about what you like and why you like 'em." I figured that would last half an hour. Two hours later, pizza and beer everywhere, albums all over the place (mostly garage rock gems), we finally realized they had to get over to the Blue Note to set up for their show. The blew the doors off that place that night. After that day, my path forward was set. I've been in radio ever since.

As they were pulling up in black hearse while we were getting tix. After show we strolled around area trying to score weed and around midnite went by the Garage. Heard music and some freak waved us in. Spirit was playing a second show. Got to hear Sardonicus songs, including Nature's Way. First time. Live. Freaking awesome. benthead Devonshire Downs is a race track (former?) in the San Fernando Valley. They performed with Canned Heat (although not listed in the lineup) at the Newport Pop Festival. It was right before Woodstock and attracted 100,000 people. It was the largest crowd of people that I ever remember being in. Lots of wild things happened. Total chaos, but quite an unforgettable experience (Wikipedia it). Big Bob Hite was incredible. I also remember seeing Spirit in Point Loma (San Diego) at a community auditorium. around the same time. I always liked Spirit. They were very much an L.A. band from Topanga Canyon

In 1975 or76 went on a dream date with a older lady really classy to a small club in Atlanta for $5 cover charge. Sat at a table 15 feet from the stage. Great show! My date loved it and me. Then in summer 1984 saw them again at a reunion for a small charge at a club on Vine Street in LA. Great show again!. Some little kids were hanging out on stage, family, so cool. Really wish they hit it big like some other much lesser bands. Most stuff seen now on SNL and late shows is so much crup. Good ole days.

Just discovered this band. The self titled album is responsible for at least two Doors songs, Led Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven and Deep Purples Mark II lineup and Alice Cooper....... Wow!

As far as I'm concerned, Led Zeppelin stole Stairway to Heaven from Randy. Listen to his song Taurus. I don't care how the courts ruled.

Probably more than any other song - this was THE dance song at those high school and junior high school dances in the mid-'70's. All the copy bands played it. EVERYONE always got on the floor for this one. Still, to this day, I don't think there's been a better rock 'n roll dance song. It makes you feel like no other song made you feel. Randy California (RIP) was a really terrific songwriter, as well as master guitar player.

Spirit was one badass band that just seamlessly clicked. They were far too short lived as a band all together. I suppose it all got to difficult for them. There’s just something about their sound that pulls at you and if you’re mid-conversation and Spirit starts playing, you’ll stop so you hear and sing with them. What a sound. 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus had no grooves on the album! I really miss you guys. Randy, you’re a hero. Bittersweet your son made it…you did not. You left a hell of a legacy. Thanks for the music❤️🕊️🎶

In 1963-64 I lived across the street from Jay Ferguson and was friends with Mark and Matt Andes at Chatsworth HS. My buddy and I would be working on my car and Jay would come strolling out with long hair and a guitar. He was kinda aloof and never got to know him well. Mark and Matt were great guys, Mark once introduced me to his Dad, Keith Andes, who at the time had a TV series. It wasn't until after HS that I realized what great musicians they all were. I was in a hotel in Seattle in the mid-80's and a Heart tune finished up on the radio and the DJ said "that was Heart with the great Mark Andes!" I called the station and asked the DJ if that was the Mark Andes from Spirit? He confirmed and that was the first time I knew Mark had been playing with Heart. Fantastic memories.

Spirits 2nd Album was there best. The Family that plays Together. Also most popular. Dr Sardonicist didn't do that well except for Nature's Way witch was ahead of its time..

Fabulous song! Fabulous musicians! Randy was named Randy "California" by Jimi because there were two Randys in his band and Randy was from California! Randy drowned in Hawaii in1997 at age 45 saving his son from a rip tide. A true hero! Rest in Peace Brother! 🙏❤️❤️

Jay Ferguson is one of those underrated ones for sure. Is he in the rock and roll hall of fame? Probably not since the RRHOF is a big joke (rap people are already IN so I hear) Sux big time.
@3243_8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Muffs No, Spirit are nowhere NEAR the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. And neither are any of the progressive bands (like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, or ELP).
@hoss73ford8 жыл бұрын
+threeby8887 with these jerks that run the RRHOF now, we'll be lucky to see them and the others ever get in, at least during our lifetimes.
@dzre20878 жыл бұрын
The RNRHOF was created as a money-laundering racket by Jann Wenner and cronies. THAT is why they don't nominate many of the greats. (The more acts they nominate in a year, the more COMP TICKETS they have to give away. And at $60,000 a pop at tables... that's a LOT of money Jann could put in HIS pocket!) SAME reason they didn't nominate Deep Purple's first bassist or longest-lasting guitarist (Steve Morse). The whole thing is LITERALLY a criminal racket. It raises funds for "charity" and music causes but that's mostly a front. ALL charities are fake. But THIS explains every question ppl have about how inane the RNRHOF's process seems to be. (It's not based on music or logic. It's based on GREED.) (Same reason they nominated NON-rock acts. The issue is SELLING THOSE EXPENSIVE TABLE SEATS.)
@hoss73ford7 жыл бұрын
That & most of the RRHOF people weren't even born during the pre-1975 era of music so they don't have a clue who Spirit or Randy California or Jay Ferguson is----among many others.

Me and a couple buddies ditched high school one day back in the 60's. Hitched hiked down to the beach in Orange County, CA. Picked-up by another hippie like us driving a VW Microbus. He was playing an 8 track tape with this group/song. Great memories, cruising Pacific Coast Highway.

Cassidy was a really cool guy. got to talk with him on stage after a show in a small club in Las Vegas. Never forget it. They played all their hits. We love all of their music. There was no band around at the time playing that kind of music. Sorry about Randy's death saving his son from drowning. He could sing and play like no other person. A good song writer too. Love them all. LamarFrog

One of the amazing things about this song is that it sounds ahead of its time. It has a late 70s sound. It would sound right at home in a compilation of various 70s AOR bands such as Journey, Styx, REO Speed Wagon ect.

One of the greatest. You can't help but want to get up and dance when you hear this music. I went out and bought all the Spirit CD's and what a range of music. You could easily say they had more than 10 top songs that were all great. I once sent an email to the drummer with Spirit and he emailed me back and told me a lot about the band and where they were at. Very cool Southern California rockers.
