@captpicard1006 күн бұрын
The wall is a Psychological defensive mechanism Pink has constructed in his mind so he won’t get hurt by people (or the worms) outside his mental Wall. Unfortunately he realises this has just made him feel nothing and he is now numb to the World (Comfortably Numb) during The Trial he wrestles internally with the possibility of breaking down his mental wall and trying to become normal again. After the Trial and outside the Wall he discovers who his real friends are. The central character of Pink is a combination or construct of Roger Waters and Syd Barrett’s personalities.
@garryiglesias40746 күн бұрын
«Absolute genius concept». This started with Dark Side of the Moon, where EVEN the album cover is the full Newton Experiment (called "The Cambridge experiment), with light being decomposed on one side and recomposed on the other side, in a forever loop, only interfered by the green color marking the beat in "any colour you like"... (Yeah I did it on purpose, "Green is the colour" is on "More", but it happens that it's also the green which "beats" on the inside of the cover).

Always interesting to go back to these earlier reactions, this is now over 2 years old. But even back then you were really starting to show off you analytical abilities, which have only gotten better over time, with your now greater understanding of rock and contemporary music. I really liked how you tied the lyrics and music together here. Great commentary on the lyrics and voices, such as on portraying a groupthink construct, without the humanity and human element. Along with the music being intentionally unimaginative, to reflect this dark hateful attitude that is all about power and the diminishment of others. Great reaction! Looking forward to the In-Depth!

Nice analysis and (as others have said) I'm happy to see this project hasn't been abandoned. I might quibble with the description of the music introducing this song as being "peaceful." While correct, I've always considering it "resigned." So, there is no more internal struggle, Pink has given in to his "darker" impulses. Yes, peace comes, but at a price.

Not a comment on this video but rather a comment about your body of work. The first time I saw one of your reactions I wasn't sure if I liked your format because nearly every song in your library I am familiar with and I suppose I just wanted to see you enjoy. I am of an age where I grew up with all of this wonderful music. Not sure exactly what I was expecting from all the reactions. But I continued to return to your videos as I began to appreciate your in-depth analysis from the perspective of a classical musician and teacher,( I also love your harp over your shoulder). I am a hobbiest drummer and enjoy learning as much as I can and you provide to me a whole new world of understanding music. Thank you for that. Last comment is about your Comfortably Numb video. I have seen many reactions to this classic and of all of them you are the only one that understood it, I assume you have not seen the movie which makes your analysis incredible. Anyway, thank you for what you do, I am now a subscriber and looking forward to looking back in your library and for what comes next. Thanks, again.

I don't remember how I got the video of this, but I got the video tape when I was 17 in the mid-80s. I probably drove my family crazy because I watched it 32 times over the next 6 months - in the living room. (Not one person in my family ever asked me about it or sat down with me to catch a glimpse.) I also drove my friends crazy because I bought the CD almost immediately and listened to nothing else for 6 months in the car. (I was the primary driver of my friend group.) I don't know if it had the same effect on me as on you, but it had a huge affect.

This is one of my favorite songs on the album, because it shows where the Wall ultimately leads. The refrain of the "We don't need no education," beat is now taunting Pink, and as much as he tried to keep everyone else out, all he succeeded in doing was keeping all of his worst nature locked inside with him.
@drewx31996 күн бұрын
I don't know about it taunting him, he has become what he hated. The "we don't need no education" beat kicks in after the background vocals briefly mention "the school", and it then forms base rhythm Pink is using.

Fascism, ie 'The Worms', feeds on the vulnerable and the isolated. Pink resigns himself to his fate behind the wall at the beginning of the song and it's at that moment The Worms move in on him, he actively welcomes them in fact. There is the facade of Nationalism mentioned ('would you like to see Britannia rule again'), a ploy often used by fascists to justify their intentions. The song, to me, describes that moment when the mentally vulnerable are most susceptible to extremism, when an individual becomes defenceless to the ideology of fascism and invites it in. Or, in Pink's case, does he...?

It's no coincidence that the main cohort that are attracted to the likes of Farage and Trump are young males, a demographic that has felt increasingly isolated and emasculated in recent decades. Add to that those who are poorly educated (thus unable to critically evaluate politics well) and you've got a large group of people who are vulnerable to extremist ideologies. I've always seen this song as a capsule that expresses 'Pink's' descent into a real demented psychosis. He is imagining all this euphoria at first, but then elements of his warped thinking start to intrude on his thinking with the various loudspeaker moments coming to the fore. The words show the level of his psychosis and dementia. The rising beat and supposed gathering of 'others' with him in the chanting march all in his mind gathering to bolster his feelings of camaraderie in his quest to face his foes and break out of his confinement. How, it is not to be (of course I can say that knowing what comes next). He feels as though he breaks out, but he doesn't really, as we shall see. Come on AMY, finish this off and put us all out of our misery waiting (waiting for the worms, no scratch that, the Trail)!

The first band to feature twin lead guitars and no keyboard, formed in 1969 are still touring and have a huge catalogue of material to explore. I would recommend the first 3 albums as this was their most influential era, from the first album, 'Phoenix', the 2nd album 'Pilgrimage' and from the 3rd (platinum) Argus, "Sometime World", "Warrior" and "Throw Down the Sword". This part of the journey is effectively the climax of the album where all of the 'worms' of his past (persons) have completed this new identity separated from his self by the wall of his own making, brick by brick (events) and witnessed by the chanting crowd at his performance. The remainder of the album is the resolution (denouement) of all that has taken place. There is an In-Depth video now for this song posted the day after this one. She would release the First Listen and In-Depth for each song close to the same time. She started it a couple of years ago. The whole album plays on the theme of isolation and being emotionally and/or physically disconnected from the environment due to emotional trauma, loss of loved ones and discontent with ones own life among other reasons, and how that may lead to psychological problems constant negative emotions, substance abuse, bad/aggresive behaviour and, on a more collective level (like countries, nations etc), authoritarianism, fascism, racism, segregation, war and all things that plague humanity throughout history. In this case the worms are are the thing that eats at you and causes you to build walls around you to be unreachable and disconnected, out of touch but also a symbol for rot and decay. In live concerts they erect this huge wall between the band and the audience to symbolize that and they project things on the wall. Really Great stuff!! Pink Floyd were such a huge band!!!

Roger Waters from Pink Floyd was dominating the band and over the years his dark view of the world stated to dominate the group. Other band members did not share dark creative view and felt isolated as Roger Waters was getting darker. This would ultimately destroy the creative co-operation within the group and they went their seperate ways. Highly recommend viewing the film “The Wall” based on this album after you finished listening to it. It will provide enormous in-site into the lyrics.

This song is the 1st thing I thought of in the Lion King during Scar's speech.

Hmm. 🤔 The entire concept album seems to flow perfectly for me I feel no disconnect nor jumping around of which you speak .. Perhaps you can elaborate on this further.

Those opening chords are totally a Brian Wilson reference. Syd was a drug casualty in real life the same way Brian was, like Pink is in this album. "You cannot reach me now," is really tragic here. The worms are a metaphor for drugs as Pink devolves from rock star to fascist dictator.

It's Britannia Rule the Wave as in having command over nature itself. Britain with (at the time) the most technologically advanced ships that 'did not need to have concern of the seas'. At the time being referred to in the song the UK had the strongest navy in the word.

The background riff is of course, again, Another Brick in the Wall's 'we dont need no...'

“It’s good to say ‘let me just check myself here for a moment’”. Wow you perfectly segway’d to the next song without even knowing it.

Such power in this music! We hear contrasting extremes of Pink's psychosis driving his imagination of a violent fascist army with himself as itsleader delivering the orders. His pathology indeed has his psychotic fantasies scattered about, bubbling up haphazardly out of his mind which is juat boiling in mad turmoil. This is evidenced by the immediate and total change at the end of this spiece. Pink frightens himself into the realization of his madness and desperately searches for a path back to sanity.

I think you're quite upset by this album. I have been listening to it since i was a child thanks to my older brother, i am in love with this album and many others by Pink Floyd. I hope one day you can listen to Atom Heart Mother and The Final Cut in full. I would love to know your opinion on that. Happy new year from italy.

_In Perfect Isolation_ ... I broke out of my wall for nearly a decade in my late 30s to late 40s, only to realize that as an introvert, I'm better off behind my wall. So here I lie, happily, behind my wall at 53.

Look up "stamped to death for £30" - the reality of the opening song; and doubtless many more ...

Remember, this concept arose out of the feeling of isolation from the audience felt by Waters. It also came after the staggering success, money and fame brought by Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. In the song, pink has lost his mind and pushes his persona beyond extremes, cynically knowing that no matter how extreme his behaviour, the audience would still follow. He has contempt for them and himself.

It has been said by my Generation X brethren that one must listen to the album version of "The Wall" and view the cinematic version twice. The first time, cold sober; the second, in an altered state of consciousness. I would personally like to recommend a checkup with a mental health professional before doing either.

In the film, 'waiting' is when Hammer is marching his troops through a township raving into a megaphone, people are closing their windows and drawing the curtains as though hammer is being pushed further into his delusion which then devolves into animation of Nazi hammers marching to the ravings of a megalomaniac...along with a key change that is quite heavy metalish. Great reaction!

the triumph of finally accepting the end, a contradiction to the human spirit.......Pink Floyd is such a journey. Wish you would listen to the whole album all the way through. Even if you posted one song at a time back to back. The whole story has to be heard complete, and watching the movie also provides great perspective.
