The viral genomes is the blueprint for making new virus particles. In this lecture we review each of the seven types of viral genome (three DNA and four RNA) and trace the pathway to mRNA. We discuss the largest and smallest genomes, what is and is not encoded in the genome, how to manipulate the viral genome to facilitate their study and their use as vectors, and why gain-of-function is so widely misunderstood.

- Who Am I? -
I’m Vincent Racaniello, Earth’s Virology Professor, and I believe that education should be free.
I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this KZbin channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more.
New videos are uploaded several times each week.
I do not run ads on our work as it is disruptive to learning. We depend on your support.

Love how Prof. Racaniello can explain so much in a short space of time to those of us with only a modicum of pretty-old biology knowledge, and that my old dreams of 45 years ago of creating cancer-treating viruses and far superior ways to make antiviral vaccines using genetic manipulation have become a reality.

Hello, Professor Vincent, I am an MPH from China. I recently viewed your virology lecture and found it incredibly engaging. I would love to share it with more people. Have you heard of Bilibili? It's a popular video-sharing platform in China, similar to KZbin. I would like to request your permission to share your lecture there. Additionally, I highly recommend creating a Bilibili account so you can share your lectures directly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Can you invite one of the Dr with no virus position for interview to discuss the virus/ no virus positions? Like Dr Tom Cowan, Dr Andrew Kaufman, Dr Stefan Lanka etcetera.

Test are open book now? I get a notecard you can write info on for comprehensive final, but every test open book is pretty wild, that no longer do yall not require standarized test but also allow notes for test is kinda strange and doesnt seem to be preparing them for post graduate schools and standardized test they will have to take.

One of your questions had an incorrect answer that said that viruses use cellular RdRp to replicate. Is it maybe true in non-mammalian eukaryotic cells that actually have RdRp?

13:20 None of the answers is satisfactory. Let's add: F) Because the genome has to be converted to a form that can be read by the ribosome.

Hey professor, is there any way you could put up the slides somewhere so we can print them and write on them. I know for me it's the best and most efficient way to learn. Either way love what you are doing with this channel! YOU ROCK!
