Episode Notes:
1. Saturn and XB360 versions running on real hardware.
2. The Saturn version of VF3 was rumored to use an accelerator cartridge to help the Saturn render the polygons. I'd love to see how far that got in development.
3. There was also a version in the works that was basically just like VF2 here. No 3D backgrounds but running at 704x480 and 60fps. Would have liked to have seen that as well.
4. A PC version was based on the Saturn release at the time. It allowed for higher polygon fighters but still had 2D backgrounds.
5. Virtua Fighter 2 used the knowledge gained from Virtua Fighter Remix and the creation of the SGL(Sega Graphics Library). Had Sega been properly prepared at launch with this knowledge, 3D development could have been so much easier for 3rd parties.
6. VF2's engine is not perfect. It still has texture and polygon glitches here and there. It also has hitching and slowdown, though infrequently.
7. This also includes the 2.1 update from the arcade. You turn it on in the options and it tweaks the gameplay and AI a bit.
8. There are a number of Easter eggs in this one. You can play against the letters character from the name input screen, and you can use Dural.
9. While I appreciated Sega's attempt to bring 3D caged fighting and light sourcing into the Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix engines, I still prefer the high rez look of this.
10. This game is a nightmare to capture for. The Framemeister hates it. It switches resolution frequently, so there are 5 second or more video drops all the time. Dead or Alive is another one that does it terribly.

My Sega Saturn came with three free games and a demo disc. Virtua Cop, Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2 were the free games. The demo disc was called the Bootleg Disc or something like that. I got my Sega Saturn in late 1998 from my dad I was 7 at the time. My sister and I played that bootleg disc and had a blast with nights too. Thank you so much for this review. It brings back so many memories ! The first game I could afford on the Saturn (the console was expensive as hell). I spent so much time on this one. The gameplay was perfect, unforgiving against stronger opponents yet always fair with somewhat of a moderately high learning curve. I can't count how many hours I spent on this game and how much progress I made from beginner to the series to a competent player. A wonderful journey. Thank you for the review !

When we got our Saturn, we never ended up getting Virtua Fighter 2 (or the other game that blew my mind at the time, Virtua Cop). Aye! This is a really nice review Sega Lord X. I really enjoyed watching it. And this game VF2 and it's gameplay, is a definite classic. And the music in this game is super cool. All of a sudden while watching VF2 in this review, I got back a strong taste of the 90's gaming scene again. Epic times to be a kid.👍😎

I will never forget the day i put Virtua Fighter 2 into my Sega Saturn, almost on a par with firing my Saturn on for the first time and playing Sega Rally! I was a massive VS fighter fan at the time, i got really good with Jacky and pulling off some of his fancy moves to finish your opponent off was extremely satisfying. An amazing port of an excellent game that is still well worth playing to this day.

I must confess that I'm a PlayStation guy but it always disappointed me that Sony preferred higher resolution than a decent 60 fps, and Sega was always ahead of its time even when it involved frames per second

This is my fav Virtua Fighter and it still looks great today. Something rare when dealing with an early textured poly game. Always liked this series as I’ve always played as a defensive and counter fighting game player. This game was made for that style of play. Button mashers and combo spammers get punished easily in this game.

I remember beating my friend so many times in a row he slammed his controller shattering it. One of the buttons ricochet hitting my face. The music...Ride the Tiger! The great replays after a slam or throw is watching art in the making. I need to set up the Saturn again and just leave it out. Paper route money was never better spent on a Saturn!

I bought my saturn about 6 month's after it was discontinued. Little did I know it was the Beginning of my VG collecting. I bought this and kept it new for a while until finally opening it out of temptation. Didn't know Saturn games could run at 60fps.

Oh yeah. I first played the original VF at a convenience store near where I lived. Since I had only played Street Fighter 2 by that time, I really enjoyed the 3D polygonal approach, and the more realistic fighting. It wasn't until early 1997 when I bought my Saturn, and it came with Sega Rally Championship and a 3-pack featuring Virtua Cop, Daytona USA and of course, VF2, all for free. Ultimately I played VF2 most out of all of them. And to this day I still have my original Saturn hooked up, as well as all those games. And VF2 is still a blast to play, though these days I also have VF2 on my XB1.

One of the Saturn games, that blew my mind... And it tells something, when I say that the first time I saw it, was when I got myself a Saturn... Something like, what, 5 years ago maybe? It still looks brilliant and plays like a dream. And that's a testament, how great of a port it is...

There's actually no real time lightsourcing whatsoever in this game, a limitation every Saturn hi-res mode game has. Basically every highlight and shadow is baked into the textures and the color palette is either darkened or brighten on every stage to simulate ambient light. Like you said in this video, these limitations make me appreciate more what the developers were able to do with the troublesome Saturn hardware and VF2 is the game that made me get a Saturn back in the day and it still remains one of my all time fighting game franchises.

@@pizzahighfive2612 couldn’t agree with you more! Remakes left and right now a days. The 90s were full of fantastic and original IPs. Going all the way from NES in 1990 to Dreamcast in 1999, the advancement in tech was the best time of my life in gaming. Had to read a strategy guide because there was no internet yet. Discovery of new games came from word of mouth by friends at school, so much fun!

I liked my Saturn. I got it literally a year after it was discontinued - however - for my eighth birthday. Because my family could only afford to fund for me one console at the time, I ended up giving it up and selling it to buy an N64 instead. Although I don't regret my N64 one bit, I certainly wish I could've kept the Saturn, I actually had this and Sega Rally championships at the time too. I wasn't that good at SRC, but I enjoyed that and Virtua fighter none-the-less. I was certainly blown away by the graphics. I bough another Saturn about ten years ago, with Tomb raider, virtua cop 2, virtua fighter 2, SRC, Loaded, D, and the Die Hard Trilogy. It stopped working a little over four years ago, and keep meaning to replace it again, someday.....someday

I grew up through this era of gaming. Among my friends and classmates, the Saturn was pretty disappointing compared to the Playstation. VF1 was unimpressive compared to Toshinden graphically, and Daytona USA was one big visual glitch compared to Ridge Racer. Most people thought Panzer Dragoon was just weird. However, when Sega got their second wind with VF2, Virtua Cop, and Sega Rally a lot of people were really surprised at how powerful the Saturn was. However, by then they had Playstations or were waiting for N64. Sega goofed on this.

I bought a Saturn mostly because I wanted to play this at home. There was a day in the arcade when I got a 21 win streak playing as Jacky, it was all eyes on the machine while I beat the hell out of everyone, lol. Good days. Last year I tried to play single player mode and I couldn't even beat Lion haha. It was also cool to have a mode on Saturn in which the machine would learn your playing style and adapt. One of the best ports I've ever seen

My personal preference is for VF3, but VF2 is the game which cemented the franchise as a fighting fixture. The Saturn port was good enough to be able to practice at home and still go to the arcades to take on all challengers.
