My family went to Disney World early May of ‘95. Epcot Center had a SEGA expo. I swear there was every Genesis and 32x game playable at countless kiosks. This was more of a dream to me than actually being at Disney. In the corner they had a Saturn hooked up with Panzer Dragoon. I played the hell out of it. Talking with the attendant I said I couldn’t wait until the fall when it came out. He said “It’s already out.” I was shocked. I went to Toys R Us as soon as we got home from vacation and bought it. Great memories with the Saturn!

Can’t believe this story! This is exactly what happened to me! It must of been around that sort of time around 95-96 and was in Epcot and went to that arcade area (never knew it was a sega expo) and ended up playing worldwide soccer 97 and fell in love - came back home from my holiday and saved up my pocket money for months and months and went out and bought it It was my first ever console I bought myself and holds a very special place in my heart

I’m still amazed how the 2D capcom, SNL and atlas fighters look and play and you can’t find these comparable on any other retro system. Since Disney now owns the rights to Marvel you can’t own any of these Capcom franchise fighter games which now makes the Saturn the ONLY platform to play them. Yeah marvel vs Capcom did come out on Dreamcast and PS1 & PS2, but thee best games that started it all such as X-men COTA, Marvel super heroes, x-men vs street fighter and marvel vs street fighter can Only be played Arcade perfect on the Saturn. These are the most treasured games that only the Saturn can give graphically as well as gameplay plus the 6 button controller.

I'd never thought as highly of it as other systems, but I fell in love with it and now own around 100 physical games, with a wish list of 200 more. Now I can't see ever parting with it. Sega Rally is still one of the best playing games ever created. It has so many wonderfully and uniquely Japanese oddities, of a type that would disappear in the years following. And the 2D arcade library of ports rather than sloppy emulations is an absolutely precious thing in this day & age. Some of those games may never surface again, with the devs & publishers long gone. Honestly, the Saturn is criminally underrated by the gaming community (especially in the US). Whenever I bring up the Sega Saturn as a great system, most people roll their eyes. I think you have to have owned one to know that it has a lot of unique and amazing games. I would love to see remasters of some of these exclusive Saturn games that have been lost to time. Unfortunately, a lot of Saturn games go for quite a pretty penny in this day and age, so I think bringing some of the Saturn's library to modern consoles with an affordable price tag would be a great way to bring some of these treasures back. The Panzer Dragoon remaster last year was a great start and I hope they eventually release the other two games in the series as well. Who knows? Maybe we'll see a Nights remaster or other Saturn classic reappear.
@ravagingwolverine3 жыл бұрын
I got the Saturn in late summer of 1995, and I agree it was a great system. Those people rolling their eyes couldn't play the likes of X-Men vs. Street Fighter properly on any other system at the time. The Playstation couldn't handle it due to no RAM expansion. And the N64 just didn't have anything like it, or much 2D of any kind, for some reason. And there were plenty of other great games. I loved my Saturn. Only reason I got a Playstation(I had to play Tenchu) used in 1998 was because Saturn releases had already stopped and the Dreamcast was stopping Saturn game development in Japan.
@mattb65223 жыл бұрын
@@ravagingwolverine Yeah, definitely! That extra RAM pack on the Saturn made some games near-arcade perfect. The Saturn was an absolute 2D powerhouse! I always wondered if the Saturn had come to market years earlier and completely had replaced the Sega CD and 32X if it would have been more successful in the US. Though, I heard one of the things that held the Saturn back was that it was difficult to code and program games compared to the Playstation. Though, that never stopped in-house developers at Sega as they seemed to tap every ounce of potential from the system. Honestly, if Sega ever released a Sega Saturn Mini, I would absolutely snap it up! Maybe include Guardian Heroes, the Panzer Dragoon series, Nights, Fighters Megamix, some Capcom fighting games (X-Men and Marvel), Street Fighter Alpha series, Astal, Fighting Vipers, Shining Force 3, Burning Rangers Clockwork Knight 1 & 2, Daytona USA: CE, Saturn Bomberman, Legend of Oasis, Baku Baku, Thunder Force V, Dragon Force, Magic Knight Rayearth, Earthworm Jim 2, Mega Man X4, Mega Man 8, Radiant Silvergun, heck, even throw Bug 1 & 2 on there! 😅
@ravagingwolverine3 жыл бұрын
@@mattb6522 Yeah, it's been well established that the Saturn was tricky to program. The architecture was certainly more complicated than the competition. It was also complicated from a cost standpoint. That many processors was costly, and Sony took advantage of it by forcing Sega into price drops. From things I read, it wasn't just that it was tricky to fully utlilize the system's power, but also Sega was late to provide third parties with development tools to help them. I can believe that. I remember how many multi-platform games were five or six months behind their Playstation counterparts. A Saturn mini would be cool, and it's fun to speculate on what would be included. I doubt it would be viable, though, due to the lack of nostalgia for it. To be fair, TG16 didn't do well outside of Japan either, and both the TG16 and Saturn have become appreciated in recent years, so maybe it could work. A Saturn mini could at least work for Japan. I don't think Saturn emulation is in the right state for such a product at the moment, both in terms of hardware and software. However, I would be fine with Saturn compilations for modern hardware as well. PS5 and XsX(Microsoft is the worst with names) should have plenty of power for Saturn emulation with no compromises. I don't know the licensing situation with the current group of Saturn emulators. Your list of games is good. I'd personally add, off the top of my head, Fighters Megamix and Virtual On(I love that one). I'm sure there are lots more good candidates for such compilations.

@@ravagingwolverine That's a shame that Sega didn't get development tools out to third parties quick enough. Sega had a lot of management conflict and they constantly made questionable business decisions during the 90's. It is a shame that past Sega couldn't pull their team together and had to completely drop out of the hardware market. Yeah, I agree. As much as I would love a Saturn Mini, it will never happen. The Saturn just wasn't popular in the US. It had such a small user base here, unfortunately. Though. I would be on board with your idea of a Saturn compilation package for modern systems (maybe even throw some other Sega games from the Dreamcast and GameCube era, too?). I could see it as maybe a Sega Collection to celebrate their legacy. I mean, we see Genesis Collections all the time, but many Saturn games have long since been forgotten.

Great selection. Pleasantly surprised to see Mystaria making the cut. From a pure gameplay perspective, it is my favorite T-RPG. It has so many great possibilities, great characters etc... You can thank Motoi Sakuraba for the awesome soundtracks of the Shining games. Some of his best works, with Baten Kaitos, in my opinion.

I bought this system when it first launched for $399.00 at Electronics Boutique Marion, Illinois. This and Command & Conquer and Dragon Force were so good. I played both games to death. I remember a friend coming over to my house after work, seeing me play both games and immediately leaving my house to go to his home, box up his N64 and Pilot Wings and heading to his local Babbage’s to get a refund and buy himself a Saturn and Dragon Force and C&C. That was how powerful the SEGA effect could be on certain people.

As someone who was primarily an N64 owner during this time period I had always wished towards the end of the Saturn's life that the two systems libraries were one. More here in the UK where the officially released games total was about the same and would have at least been a library that could be as good as what the Playstation had. I honestly have never owned a Saturn though because at the time where I lived no where stocked it and by the time the N64 was released it was gone from the shelves of all but one or two places even close to where I lived as a child. I was going to start collecting for one recently until the prices started to go up again so I am holding off for a bit longer.

Going from Genesis to Saturn was an awestruck moment. Colors, graphics, sound & the content was amazing. I have 8 of ur top 10. Check out Tomb Raider on Saturn, you can see details much farther away than the PS1 version. Sega had a winner of a system but SOA threw in the towel too quickly IMO.

I also prefer Saturn Tomb Raider to PSX Tomb Raider, even though the textures are more jaggedy. I still play the game every year or two, and the Saturn version feels more visceral to me, involves me more.

It's unreal how much darker the Saturn version is though. I love Tomb Raider but going back playing the first couple on of hardware is tough. The controls and graphics are... interesting. I played then first on PC with my Voodoo 2 looked way better. Love that Tomb Raider was made for the Saturn though. Not the PS.

No Panzer Dragoon Saga? *ZOMGZ UNSUBSCRUBBED!!!11!* In all seriousness, it's always nice to see more Saturn focused videos. The system was ridiculously underrated. Funnily enough, my original model 1 Saturn that I had as a kid is one of the few retro consoles I own that still works perfectly (aside from the dead internal battery, natch)

Should be an access panel on the back to replace the battery. Nothing special about the battery. Get them at Walmart.

I'm not saying my experience is representative of the system's quality, but my original model-one Saturn was the most troublesome system I owned. I even picked up an early Playstation used that never developed the skipping problem they were notorious for. My Saturn had to go back to Sega for warranty support and repair twice as it stopped reading games. The first time, shortly after I got the thing, the system started reading games again when it got to Sega. The second time, they replaced the CD drive. It worked for years after that. It doesn't work anymore. I don't know if it's the CD drive, or the region mod gone bad. My model two that I got used worked for a while, but has a bad power supply, which I suppose is understandable considering the age and isn't hard to fix. As said, I'm not saying my bad luck means anything. Cool to hear yours is still chugging along.

Good to see your top 10. Dragon Force is a great game and one of the best pickups ever for me as I didn't really know what to expect. Dragon Force is part of one of my greatest gaming memories that I've detailed before. Short version is I picked up both Dragon Force and import version of Fighters Megamix in the spring of 1997 right at the beginning of a school break. I had a blast with those two amazing games. I was in a bit of a gaming depression in late 2000 with the decline of both Sega and SNK, so I was out of gaming for a bit, but I was still going back to the Saturn and Dragon Force and making great memories despite not getting new games. Luckily, the GBA would revive my interest for some time. I played a lot of great games on the Saturn and tried a lot of new things as well, so it really was fun to own the system in its time. I'm not going to do a top 10, but my top games would have to have spots for Fire Pro Wrestling S: 6 Men Scramble, which I played constantly for a while, and King of Fighters '97, which I fell in love with seeing it in the arcade, despite being right next to Street Fighter 3. Those two games were always very important to me.

I had a Saturn before I went to PlayStation, I never got rid of my Saturn though. One of the things that pushed me to the change was the lack of support hardware like the RF Switch or extra controllers. I lived in an urban area too so you'd think those things would have been widely available. Also most of my local game spots were very much Sony/Nintendo fanboys.
