you had to be alive in 1996 to truly appreciate how visually amazing it was to see aoi dancing around in the snow. The model 3 hardware was way more powerful at the time than anything on computer or console

i were 15 years old in 1996. its right what you say. see this game in 1996 was shocking. the video shows the AOU 1995 or 1996 introduction, offered with VF3tb for dreamcast (japanese version, i own by the way). It´s easy to see how sega downgraded the final arcade version, but still impresible, 10 years ahead of its time.

@@ENFDO The Final Model 3 release doesn't seem downgraded that much compared to the tech demo, the only actual downgrade that can be spotted is that hands in the tech demo were smooth instead of the hands made by multiple model pieces without seams we got in the final game. Other than that in terms of lighting and texture quality the final release stays on the same level of quality as the demo. And of course the rushed Dreamcast port of 3tb had some severe downgrades to lighting, textures, sounds, and seams (lack of them on joints) SEGA really screwed over the poor devs at Genki by giving them barely any resources, almost no documentation of the Dreamcast hardware, and a small budget with a unreasonable deadline.

Thesch 28 no Way. Check the sega vf3 tech demo inside vf3tb. I think is the first downgrading ever but doesent matter because vf3 still great!!!.

totally agree. i know it looks stupid and outdated today but for 1996 this was incredible. there's a reason why Virtua Fighter 1 cabinets are in the Smithsonian

My Dad had this game on the Dreamcast around the late 90s or 2000,vague memory. I’m a 90s kid(99’) and over the years something about Virtua makes me come back to those vague memories(Started at Virtua Fighter 2 on PlayStation 2(8 years)then Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown(13 years)then Virtua Fighter 1(15 years)then Virtua Fighter 4(18 years)then the 3rd didn’t came to mind until I tried most of the Virtua Fighters on the Sega Consoles) I’m 24 now and to this very day Virtua Fighter has been a journey for me!

I remember myself watching this video over and over again, it was historically interesting.

Interestingly, it seems that VF3 models in this presentation actually looked better than what we eventually got in the final version of the game. This is especially noticeable on joints, fingers being the most obvious example - the hands and fingers on these models look nice and smooth, while in the final game they are quite disjointed.

If you’re referring to the Dreamcast version, it’s easy to explain: the M3 had better specs. If you mean in comparison to the arcade version it’s because they would’ve maxed out everything they could for the purpose of demonstrating the hardware.

@@Swampert384 That assertion is incorrect because Dreamcast version of Virtua Fighter Team Battle was ported by a third party Genki. Contrast to Dead of Alive 2 that has no such issue. Let remind the Dreamcast and its arcade counterpart Naomi use tile-based rendering technique which displays only visible polygons instead of the brute approach of Model 3 which renders both visible and invisible polygons on screen.

@@Tippotipo DOA2 was also based on NAOMI. While the Dreamcast has its advantages over the Model 3 Step 1.0 variation VF3 uses, it’s definitely not on par with Step 1.5 and above.
