Just like Daytona USA, I've always loved Virtua Fighter, and this was a great port of it, at least until Remix came along and blew it away. But still - there's something really charming about such old-but-clean looking 3D graphics.

Seeing this in the toy store for the first time blew my mind back then with the rotating camera angle. I knew then the future is now! 😄

How come everything was better in the 90’s? The sounds, the smells, the way everything felt, just felt so much more wholesome and creative then it is now.

The blocky polygon fighters used to creep me out, they looked like they would take your soul, with their empty eyes. Underneath the creepiness factor though, was a solid game in arcades, and not bad on the Saturn. Though the re-release is the better release for the Saturn, the original release was buggy as hell.

You're welcome! I bought it at a great import store along with the very first Sakura Wars. I tried to play the latter on my Saturn last year, but the save data on my 4-in-1 Action Replay cartridge and system memory kept getting deleted. I may have to import a Japanese Saturn in order to get the Saturn experience. (Because of this, I had to buy the Dreamcast version and did a bit of disk burning in order to get it playable)

vgaoct91 I played it with a Action Replay too, saving works fine on it. If the system isn't holding save files, open the panel on the back of the system on the corner opposite the A/V port. You should see a battery in there (it's a 2032, like you'd find in a watch or on a computer motherboard). Pop it out, take a quick trip to Walmart and buy a new one, stick it in, and you should have a working internal battery again :) Beyond that, just make sure you don't accidently pick the format or erase option in Sakura Wars lol obviously that would be bad

I'll look into that. The Dreamcast version, naturally has a better technical performance - Cleaner visuals, the ingame music sounds less computer-like, and also has a button to make the movement animations go by quicker.

I like how the Sega opening is similar to the Namco opening in Tekken 1. Some real rivalry right there

The characters are light sourced in all the stages. The remixed version that came out later didn’t have that. I prefer this original version to the remixed edition.

Sega Saturn. Basically the Gazza of games consoles, brilliant in some respects but not even a fraction of the colossus it could have been. Ditto Dreamcast.

Oh wow...this is the early version that original came with the Saturn. I know because it has some nasty bugs in it. Sega replaced this one with a remixed version of the game.
@Ye110wjacket
@Ye110wjacket 10 ай бұрын
It has visual glitches, but I wouldn’t call the gameplay buggy. The remixed version did not resemble the original arcade version. This edition is based on the look of the original arcade game, so I prefer this one. Virtua Fighter Remix was the same game reskinned.

@@Ye110wjacket You don't remember characters completely disappearing off screen depending on what was happening? My game did it all the time. For example it loved to do it just before or after a flying stomp. It wasn't as bad if it happened just before because usually I would just pop on top of the other character as I was stomping. It got dangerous if the other character recovered as I was stomping because a sweep would follow knocking me too the floor. That is why I say it was buggy. A visual glitch becomes a bug when the gameplay is effected by it. Do you remember the poor state the replays were in. The disappearing glitch would happen every single time during a replay. Sometimes you couldn't even tell what was going on. Finally, the Remixed version was absolutely superior to the original Saturn port. I even like it more than the original and I'll tell you why. The game was incredible in 1993 as it truly showed us something we had never seen before. However, by 1995 it was time for something new. The original Virtua Fighter needed a face-lift and even better it stayed true to its original form. As far as technical gameplay, graphics, and sound it squashes the original Tekken. Just as Virtua Fighter II was better than Tekken II in all areas but character choice (I had them both when they were brand new and Tekken II's roster is bigger/more varied).

I never said it was perfect. It glitches, but even with the glitches for many years it was the best home version. The PC version was VF Remix and if you played as the original flag shaded characters you got the ghastly VF remix backdrops which are different from the arcade versions. The 32X version just doesn’t look right and the Saturn original was the closest to the look of the original - even with all its flaws. That was the only port they tried to get the original arcade visuals. The music sounds great, and it plays beautifully. Of course it could have been better. The original arcade game has never seen a decent home port. Even the Astro City Mini version has its flaws and with too much anti-aliasing it just isn’t the same. For me, the original game is the real iconic game. I even bought the arcade cabinet and allowed the Barbican to take it around the world as part of their gaming exhibition. I just love the original game and I think the Saturn version was not that bad. All the versions had their flaws but can you seriously say the 32x version looks anything like the arcade? The characters look horrible in that version and VF looked stunning in the arcade. Maybe the Saturn version didn’t get there, but it looked way more like the arcade game. Personally I never had characters disappear completely on that edition and I have been playing it since at least 2000. The PAL version is best because it came out last and they sped it up and got rid of the jerkiness. If you didn’t like it, that is cool. Works for me.

@@Ye110wjacket Why would you want a port of Virtua Fighter when an arcade perfect version of Virtua Fighter II is available on all current Xbox platforms and the Switch? That's like looking for Street Fighter II: The World Warriors when Championship Edition, Turbo, Hyper, and Super are available. The only reason I can think of is preservation but that's about it. Oh and the 32X port of Virtua Fighter plays better than the original Saturn version because it is stable 99.9% of the time. Addendum- Do you know how many Saturn games are available on the Xbox (One/One X/XSS/XSX)? Quite a few and they're still adding more. I got Elevator Action Returns for our Series X I think it was 6 months ago. More Saturn games are coming and playing them on the Series X pad is like a dream come true.

@@Sinn0100 There is no arcade perfect version of the original Virtua Fighter on Xbox. Are you sure you are not referring to Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown? That is not the same game as the original. The sequels play differently and some people like the original games, so it is a question of taste and preference. By the way, I do think some people would look for Street Fighter II The World Warrior, even if the latter Street Fighter games are available. It could be nostalgia but I know I often like playing earlier games in a series. To me, the original Virtua Fighter has such a distinct and individual look, it is still impressive. As such, I would welcome a more arcade perfect version for the current or future generation of consoles/platforms. The closest port/emulated version of Virtua Fighter is on the Astro City Mini. There are some other good games on that mini arcade machine as well. Also, I disagree about the 32X version of Virtua Fighter. I have it (there is even a video of it running on my CRT tv). The Saturn version had visual glitches, and the Japanese version had a jerky camera too, but the Pal version was way more stable, and it looks more like the arcade version than the horrible visual mess the 32X one was. To think some people consider that definitive is a joke. Compare it to the arcade version and it looks really poor so why would anyone even bother playing it today? Even the music on that version wasn’t as good as the Saturn edition. The 32X was good for the hardware and in the absence of the Saturn, it gave Mega Drive users an opportunity to play something approaching next gen, but I remember looking at that for the first time when it came down and though, “oh dear, the 32X can’t even do the original Virtua Fighter properly”. Looking at a game like that, knowing the Saturn and PlayStation had games like Tekken and Virtua Fighter 2, Ridge Racer and Sega Rally, the 32X would not have been able to compete on any level because it wasn’t even able to run a better version of Virtua Fighter. In the early 3D era, the look of the game was extremely important for that is what drew people in. Yes, you can play Out Run on the Mega Drive but it is a joke compared to the arcade version. Without the scaling, it just doesn’t look as impressive. If the visuals are part of the appeal of the game, a more accurate port would be desirable. I know at least three Saturn games on the Xbox marketplace: Nights Into Dreams, Guardian Heroes and Radiant Silvergun. Are there any others? I wasn’t aware there were any others.
