Maybe you don't miss them but I miss the "quiet and calm" of BBS computing which was just great fun at the time, compared to the rubbish of the modern web where it's estimated that up to 60% of it now is just AI and bot-generated nonsense.

On Debian, there a six virtual consoles accessed via CTRL+ALT+F1 to CTRL+ALT+F6. Typically, the desktop login is on the first virtual console (CTRL+ALT+F1). The logged-in desktop session is on the next available virtual console, typically the second virtual console (CTRL+ALT+F2). *_However,_* if you don't logon at the desktop login, but jump to the second virtual console (CTRL+ALT+F2), you are able to login on tty2. When you then log into the desktop (via the first virtual console (CTRL+ALT+F1)), the logged-in desktop session will then be on the third virtual console (CTRL+ALT+F3).

I've often fantasized about having a serial-connected terminal on my server, seems like they're not listed on ebay these days

some motherboards still come with RS-232 ports, as god intended, you just have to connect the header on the motherboard to a port on the case. Failing that, a PCIe RS-232 card is far superior to an USB emulation.

Which is a good thing believe it or not cause in same scenarios you would avoid that by disabling such feature.

This topic brings back great memories for we boomers who have spent most of our lives working in the IT industry, especially around UNIX and Linux. Unfortunately, it goes completely over the heads of the spoiled younger generations who only care about GUIs and gaming, who never read documentation or manuals (if it's not in a short video then their crippled goldfish-like attention spans can't focus for long enough to learn anything new anyway) and they don't want to sit at a workbench and put computer parts together in interesting ways. All they care about is their Rust programming and posing about on social media trying to look "l33t" with their Steam Decks that they believe makes them experts in Linux. So it's a waste of time trying to explain to them how much more "peaceful" computing used to be, with so few distractions when you were working at a terminal interface - most of the millennials and younger generations whine incessantly if you even suggest to them that they might have to use the command line.
