VirtualDJ first program we ever made was a pitchslider/shift (keylock and tempo) for Winamp, then the DJ software Atomix-mp3. (hence the name Atomix for the company). Atomixmp3 was never about automix ;-) And subsequent software releases (Numark Virtual Vinyl, VirtualDJ, PCDJ VJ, eJay, DJ Decks etc (all made by Atomix)) where about vinyl turntablism to video jockey. The company vision is of course about making technology and software for DJs, and not automixing. Its just a feature out of 100s, and not even a main feature, its a "side feature" tucked away in the browser sideview ;-) The Atomix name resembling automix is purely coincidental. The company name and logo was nuclear (as in powerful), sounded cool back in the 90s ... thats all ;-) Perhaps in fairness it has not aged well, but so many company names from decades past have not ;-) Apple is not a fruit company, and Atomix is not automix ;-)

There are many things I can correct you on re: VDJ but as a first time user coming from Serato you are looking at it from their perspective so you may thini VDJ does not work because, "when I do this in Serato it does this." A lot of what you said Serato does that Virtual doesn't well, Virtual does do it but its not the default setting. Virtual is made for all DJs so some functions that you want other djs don't and VDJ tends to focus on the most widely used functions for the default settings. There are extensive options that you can change to customize to your liking. There is a bit of a learning curb if you want to change things up. For example you can change your keyboard settings in the mapping section to "factory default optional" and that will make your keyboard function just like Serato, etc. As far as being accurate that will also be in the settings. Things like key lock can be changed where the key does not change when you change the pitch of the song. Just saying. Full disclosure, I work for Virtual DJ so I'm always letting ppl know. Thanks for the review. I think you did a great job coming from your perspective.

I’ve used every software in my 19-20 years as a dj, I’ve been mainly a serato dj for its clean and quick performance and simplified layout for the better part of it, but I’ve also tried djay pro and vdj a lot more over the last yr and I gotta say they’ve been pretty on point..in fact I’m debating switching to vdj for stems till serato gets on board.. When stems works my god is it amazing how creative u can get on the fly. Serato for years has been lagging behind on innovation that’s something everyone agrees on.

In all honestly, i started out with Vdj 7 it worked perfectly, then i found out that Serratto was the industry standard, so I got a copy of that too, and I hated it, i was difficult, and seemed limited, so I use virtual DJ, (heyyyyy, look at me i'm a fake dj, who really give a rats behind, not me) do I use the automix feature, Very seldom, a'm I ever gonna be a club DJ, I doubt it, so for me Virtual DJ works best, the more i use it the more i like it. I think whatever program works best for you, thats the one you stick with, its like apple and pc, or Iphone and android, whatever works for you , stick with that! whatever puts money in your pocket, go with that!

Also for serato to work professionally you need serato compatible gear as in soundcards or controllers made for serato People don't want to admit that when they buy serato gear that the software is being paid and it is not free With virtual dj you can use the cheapest controller on earth and it will work . You can even use no controller at all .

With #2, the pitch shifting in Virtual DJ... there's a single padlock icon to the side of the pitch shifters if you're in Essentials or Pro mode (not in Starter mode). You click on those so they're lit, you can speed up and slow down the track as much as you like without it sounding like The Chipmunks / Barry White. Which you have to pay for with Serato but comes with every version of Virtual DJ. With the thing about not having to pay for Serato if your controller comes with it - the same thing apples to Virtual DJ! There are controllers that come with Virtual DJ LE ...but unlike Serato Lite that has nothing but the bare bones in its software, you can use the budget controller that came with VDJ LE to video DJ (which costs $349 to do with any version of Serato). You awarded points to Serato because you didn't read the manual about pitch locking on VDJ, and remembered that you could get a 'lite' version of Serato with a controller without checking if the same is true for VDJ . You can, and the VDJ starter hardware already has the functionality of $349 Serato DJ Suite without paying through the nose for Pitch ’n Time DJ and Video DJ expansion packs!

Nick you got it all wrong. Rekordbox Dj is the winner. This argument will go on like the Android vs Apple debate. When I talk to other DJs, most of the ones that use VDJ get really defensive about why they use VDJ. I think you should use what you want. The crowd don't care. Only DJs care about software and vinyl. Great video

I started using serato scratch live and then Serato DJ for about 6 years. I love serato, but ended up switching to Virtual DJ and havent looked back. As a video DJ, I found it frustrating that serato never updated or fixed the video plugin (still uses a dead program such as quicktime to run it). Video skins allows your audience to see realtime what tracks and what methods you use to mix on the screen. As a single op wedding DJ, the ability to program a short automix for bathroom breaks, going over to talk to the bride and groom to organize the next order of events, coordinate with the photographer videographer about whats about to happen of the timeline has changed etc. The rock solid stability of the video engine even while using high def videos without even running a high cpu meter. Being able to broadcast right from the software without using third party software. Cleaning up dirty tracks and adding video to an mp3 on the spot, turning a song into an instant karaoke by from inside the software downloading and layering lyrics and removing the vocals with the stems function. Having crates automatically update. Live remix capabilities through the samplers and stem combination is outstanding. Being able to color code with the touch of a button individual or a group of songs with the touch of a button is also helpful. The amount of features for someone who is very creative is insane, too long to list. The one thing I do like better in serato is the FX and the waveforms.

Exactly. NEVER "Smart Automix". Remove Silence with 2 second fade time. I've used this software for 14+ years - in clubs, karaoke bars, and weddings / corporate. I went with my choice of software and learned it inside and out. A Serratoi / Traktor / Ableton DJ would do just as well as I do. My first gig was 1986 with one CD deck, one TT, and one cassette deck. It's about the party, NOT the hardware / software!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have been married to Virtual DJ since day 1 and know it’ll be a nasty divorce. I tried using Serato but get lost with organizing and creating my music files. Almost like learning a new language. VDJ was extremely easy to learn and free when DJING professionally were not in my plans. As much as we can’t stand the fact that 5G and 6G are imminent, I probably won’t be in the DJ business when Virtual DJ takes over. Just as likely as many more everyday tasks we are used to doing for ourselves (Virtual Driving,etc...) It’s in the name my friend - hopefully not in our lifetime.

Excellent review. This helped me pick the software i've come to love. Virtual DJ! Thank you so much for this video. Okay I gotta jump in about all this automix hate. It's obvious that people don't understand it as a beginner's tool. I'm a DJ, and I'm also a photographer. And here's a good analogy. On most digital cameras (for beginners) there's a "full auto mode." It sets up your f stop, shutter speed, iso and other features for you. You just point and shoot. Does this mean AI is taking over photography? is this lowering the barrier of entry and taking destroying an artist's ability to create? Of course not!!! It'sa beginner's tool. It allows me to play with one feature at a time. When I first learned, I used full auto and just practiced lighting, angles, and focus. Then I took off one of the auto features, like shutter speed. Then f stop. then iso. No real pohtographer will not learn manual mode just becaues they started on auto. And no real photographer will NEVER use full auto! Sometimes i'll use it for a selfie, or a craigslist photo, or because I don't have time to adjust settings before i miss a shot. Same with automix. No real DJ will rely on it and never learn. It's a learning tool itself. And yes, Ill still use automix because at my shows crowd interaction is part of my jam. To be a true artist, you need to learn the manual modes of cameras and DJ software alike to have full control of your art. Don't be a Dinosaur, Nick. No robots are taking yer jerb.

This is the comment. Everyone thinks Djs who use VDJ uses the auto mix live. That’s not true! I have to manually change my songs and mix them in myself just like serato. The only different is when the party hasn’t started yet I can put on auto mix and it will mix the song for me. Which serato doesn’t have.

My first Serato controller will be delivered today. After 7 years of using VDJ; Today, I become a real dj. All joking aside, VDJ is great, it has served me very well and if I'm mixing between a few tracks on my DDJ-1000 in VDJ its great for house, and 4 on the floor like you mentioned. But I've been learning to scratch, daily practice shows me there isn't much consistency and I'm so tired of my cues not hitting on the right beat. Last week I went into the official VDJ support group and asked when they anticipated support for the Rane ONE. I have never had so much bullshit thrown at me. The users certainly eat up the apocalyptic vibe. I just want to mix, I want it to work, I live for consistency. No one on the other side of the speakers gives two shits about what is happening in the booth. But I'm really excited to give this a go.

I just want to add that, this was a good video. Straight to the point, entertaining, and honest. I use vdj myself, and have always felt that vdj was kinda gimmicky and lacking. albeit its a great software and gets the job done with versatility for karaoke djs n stuff, but for me its always been about learning how to mix with the controller and do it in a cool way. I've never once touched auto mix, not to say that it doesn't have potential, but for me- there's nothing more satisfying then doing it myself. I noticed allot of hate in the comments and felt like I needed to weigh in with my rant against vdj, despite ever only using vdj. I may not have years of experience yet, but with only a year of experience (and allot of practice) ive played a couple of partys and have received positive feedback (socially distant and face mask partys). tbh, other times I sucked (usually cuz a lack of preparation). but all in all, vdj is just not the standard. it has crashed on me, it reorganizes my folders for no reason sometimes and its online music pools links suck. on the other hand, I have friends that use Serato, and the seamlessness makes sense. it works. not to mention controllers are specifically designed for that software in most cases, so your almost guaranteed full functionality. anyway, thanks for the vid. Hey Nick, i really enjoy ur vids, i mainly a vdj user and sometimes rekordbox and serato and while watching ur vid i decided to jot down a few points that u may not be familiar with that would help with some of the issues u had in using vdj. I think it would've been help if u had someone who knew the program with u on this assignment, but later for that... maybe. My 2cents below. 1. U didn't press the key lock feat feature in vdj to maintain the key for slowing down and speeding up. 2. For lining up the beat grid, u just hv to hit tap once when the track is lined up on the down beat when the track is not playing. 3. On the issue u had with the eqs and waveforms, the vertical waveforms can be changed from colored to shapes (shapes being the wave that's affected by the eqs). But even better than that, there's an auto reset checkbox in the settings for the eqs and another for the filters. When these boxes are checked, the next track loaded will hv the filters and eqs go back to 12 o'clock in the software - regardless to where u left the knobs on the hardware. 4. 1 feature i think u missed was the Event Planner feature which definitely a big one. Not sure if u were aware of it. 5. I agree hitting recurse can be annoying but on the plus Vdj search bar searches the entire library as opposed to whats in a crate, so in a sense u can be in any crate or music folder and still be able to access everything from typing in the bar. 6. U can save the program to remember your login info so u won't hv to login all the time. 7.On the pricing... VDJ is free for home use with all it's features and u can dj with the laptop, but serato sells this same feature - to dj with only the laptop- as an expansion pack for $39 and that only works if u hv the pro license. From that angle, it's not cheaper. Also on the trial side vdj gives a 30 day trial on any controller, thus u can get 60 days trial with 2 controllers and so on. Serato pro is only 14 days period. Lastly all updates in vdj as well as all new features are free for life. 🤔 I respect what ur views are on the end of the vid on the principles on what the company stands for, but i believe the company (atomix) has evolved and hold on those same views as when it 1st began.... that vision statement i really a load of BS tho. How i see it is that they're adding things in to make our job easier and enjoyable. Didnt mean to make this such a long read. Peace bro.

Thanks for watching. I did consult with an expert in VDJ the entire time to try and fix any issues I had before putting them in this video. 1. Yes I did. The key lock just sucks with vinyl. tried all the setting even level 3. 2. I understand that but my point was I don't want to have to do that all the time, Serato more accurately analyzes songs. 3. I hate that automation shit because it messes me up mid mix. I'm not a fan of shapes. And there are skins I think that can do it maybe but I had a hard time finding them. 4. I did see that and it is pretty cool but not something I'd jump ship for 5. I heard from a good source that they're fixing that in a future update so that won't be a problem for long. 6. I know and I said that in the video that I'm sure there's a way. 7. I hear you. Serato is free updates for life as well.

I was listening to your comments about the features. The Stems don't have to be used on your eq, you can use them in your pads on your controller or on the computer. The main thing I like Stems for is being able to make live mash-ups mixing old with new that you may not be able to do with older sings that don't have edit versions like acapella's or instrumentals. As for the eq and other items like parameters, you can go into settings and set it to reset when loading a new track. VDJ also has a key lock or unlock and change feature with tempo. That's just a few things I am noticing about your list. However only using VDJ for a week is not necessarily enough time to really get into learning everything it can do cause there is a lot. For being cool its cool to use Serato only because Pioneer licensed them instead of VDJ, if pioneer had licensed VDJ it would be a different story. So Serato is free because when you buy the controller Pioneer for example pays for the License. They both have a lite version. Notice Pioneer has made their own software now. I do have to agree about their mission statement and the company. The mission statement is stupid I have been a DJ since 1985 and I started or turntables. I don't use the auto DJ feature unless I an doing a wedding or something where I need to play some dinner music or something to that nature that doesn't need to be mixed and then, I only use it to remove silence and play the songs back to back without dead air. I am a believer in Mixing, hardcore. I love mixing and no software is ever gonna mix better than me, or any true Mixing DJ for that matter. Yes you can set it to auto sync and match beginning and end together for a certain amount of time in seconds, but that goes out the window when you are mixing at different parts of a song or when you mix certain sections or cuts that can be 8, 16, 32 or more beats in you mix, there is just no way the software is ever gonna be CREATIVE. I like VDJ and only started on it because I also wanted to play video and karaoke, and in the beginning Serato could not do that and still can't play Zip files for Karaoke. The company I also have to agree with you as it is a European company and hard to contact anyone for customer service, tech support or really anything. Their way is to email and tutorials, and I hate that part. I like to actually talk to people. I guess that shows my age lol. However now that they have come out with the new Mixers and players from Pioneer and Denon DJ, The software is on the way out. If they create Players and mixer interface that will play the video onto an external screen without the use of a computer then I will no longer be using any software. Maybe I should create one and license it to them some how lol. That was just my 2 cents worth. Good video, take care.

I hear you Nick! I always wanted Serato but I need the karaoke feature. I’m all three the Wedding, Club and Karaoke DJ. I don’t like using automix live it does not sound as good as my own mixing that’s for sure but maybe sometimes I need a piss break during dinner time it works for me lol. I use VertualDj but so wanting Serato to add the karaoke and stems! Then! I would switch for sure.

Unless I'm clueless, stems are working just fine in VDJ. I chose VDJ 14 years ago because of strong video / karaoke capabilities. I haven't been let down since.

Wish I was able to get Virtual dj 7 again. This newer version is hard to mix with a keyboard and mouse. Beat match does not work to well together and usually have to manually match them with a mouse, but it's way too sensitive and the mix blends go off Beat. Any suggestions on how to make songs easy to blend without any difficulty?

I used VDJ before. I remember searching for a track and seeing the results show me where that track was in multiple folders. Maybe it's your settings. I also remember being able to pull a track and move it to desktop to copy. I do know that different versions of the software have different features added and removed.

Having used Serato for a few years I tried VD not expecting much but was surprised it found the Roland DJ202 controller immediately and after a slight bit of tweaking found that it allows you to emulate the feel of a turntable better than it does in Serato. In Serato it feels good but is a bit rigid but you get used to it and can scratch etc but it doesn't quite feel like a turntable with the slack you get whereas with VD I got it very close to feeling like a mini turntable and the cut in on the crossfader was better than when I put Serato at its tightest setting.

Nice video, I'm actually a Traktor user. In March of this year I Bought the Numark NS7iii It came with serato pro software, When I first Bought this controller I thought That it was going to work with my favorite DJ software "traktor" however it didn't, I decided to try serato but personally I didn't like the look of serato's engine and still I'm not a fan of their engine, so after that I decided to try virtual DJ and "wala" instantly felt in love with this software,now is true the only problem is the analizer is not very acurate when detecting the BPM and the key of the songs but other than that is a good software.

What I can tell you is that after watching this video twice. I tested 4 programs myself Serato 3.03, RekordBox, Virtual DJ 2023 and Djay Pro. What I found was Virtual DJ runs in RAM and the other programs are "more" CPU intensive. So I had an old HP laptop AMD Ryzen 5 and bumped the RAM to 64 gigs and swamped out the SSD for a M.2 SSD NVM drive and now VDJ runs amazingly smooth while the other programs would randomly crash and lockup without warning. At the end of the day is about what works for you, how you mix and song selection. So there you have "my experience" with it. And $299 for a lifetime software license...you can't beat it!

I've been a VDJ user for the past 15 years. I had a short stint where I used Deckadance 2 ( before it was sold to Stanton ). I tried Serato and could never adapt to it. From a UI standpoint ( or the visuals ) to a performance standpoint I never found the experience enjoyable with Serato. With VDJ the only time I use automix is when I'm hosting a party and I want background music. Other than that I have all the auto features turned off and I do everything manually with the skills I've been developing for the last 15 years. I don't agree with their mission statement but I understand the implication of the new technology to help take a DJ's skills do the next level. I also like how everything is included with VDJ instead of having to buy expansion packs. Also with the Stems you can tie them to your hot cue pads instead of your EQ knobs which is my preference.

Regarding the Pitch and Time demo with Serato vs. VDJ, at 6:12. If you want to maintain the pitch while slowing down the tempo on VDJ, just click the little 'MT' icon under the BPM readout. Go ahead and slow or speed your track and the pitch won't change. Dude, you have to spend more than a week with VDJ. If something bothers you about VDJ, it probably bothered someone else too, and there's a fix posted. BUT DON'T CHANGE, BUDDY. You're a treasured contributor to my life and entertainment, and when you make mistakes, it just makes you more human to everyone which is perfect. DON'T CHANGE. And keep kinda sorta messing up once in a while. Makes me feel better about myself! ;-)

I have always loved music but I am new to learning how to DJ. With that said DJ's that grew up with records and turntables are very skilled musicians that learned how to mix by ear. On the other hand, I prefer to have AI beatmatch and mix perfectly so that I can have a seemless mix of the music I love. My biggest complaint of All DJ's is the fact that they tend to play popular music and not music that sounds good to them. A true DJ plays music that is hard to find and gets the crowd moving. I just Downloaded VirtualDJ and Love it with just an hour of trying it out.

I just came across your video. I kind of knew it was going to be biased but, you do have a point on the Name of the software! It hurts the integrity of the DJ and makes it unappealing. So I’m a S9/PLX1000 wedding video DJ myself and in 2023 VDJ is just too packed with features that makes serato primitive… i have serato suite as well. So your right it’s all about your workflow and what works for you in the end.

Atomix VDJ was a joke before it was rewritten from the ground up in version 8. Scratch Live always offered less features, but was the only stable DJ software 15 years ago. Hence why it still considered a PRO software till this day. Here is what I love about Virtual DJ version 2021: • New Pro High Resolution GUI (Looks Like Vector) • Automix (Dinner/Cocktail) • It Loads and Closes in Seconds • The Library Recognizes Your Organized Folder Structure • Full Blown Software with ALL Features Available Without the Need Of a Controller Plugged In • Video and Karaoke • Seamless BeatJump • Stems is Next Generation (but most songs sound like a DIY low quality garbled audio) • Recognizes Serato Cues and Loops • Colored Waveforms • Customization is Second to NONE • Low Latency Audio Engine Even Without a Dedicated Audio Card • Customized Beat Grid FX • Almost ALL Controllers are Supported For FREE or Easy to MIDI Assign • Analyzes a Library Without Having to Unplug Hardware • Supports ALL Audio Cards (Also a Negative When Low Quality Sound Cards/Controllers Are Used) • 4 Decks ALWAYS Available Having said all this, Serato DJ emulates vinyl phenomenally and sounds better. It helps to have great audio cards and mixers from RANE that offer pristine audio quality (114db SNR USB to analog output). Slow baby scratches just emulates vinyl better and doesn’t get digitized. Pitch N Time is the best in the industry. FLIP is outstanding and I use it to Quick Mix or skip verses. Something VDJ can’t do on the fly without making a separate REMIX track. Serato DJ offers the best algorithm for spinning platters. They figured out the sweet spot with inMusic (Numark, Denon, Rane)Turntables that eliminates WOW and FLUTTER while maintaining ZERO sticker drift.

I started on virtual dj in 2015 and switched to serato by 2016 which i prefer. The only feature on virtual dj that i thought was better was the auto-sync. In vdj it matched 2 tracks perfectly by just pressing the button, but on serato in simple sync it just matches the bpm and you have to manually use the jog wheel to match it up to the other track. Serato should add that super-easy-sync as an extra sync feature, because its extremely hard to mix drum n bass! Also i found that vdj couldn't calculate the high bpm's of hardcore/gabber tracks and would come up on screen halved, so 180bpm would show as 90, but serato managed better. Any idea why some tracks do that?
@NickSpinelli
@NickSpinelli 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure technically why serato is more accurate with beat grids but I assume it has something to do with the crate loading and analyzing process because that's a big difference between the two programs. VDJ recognizes music folders instantly and can scan hardrives 10x faster than serato - it's just waaaay easier on VDJ all around. BUT, their beat grids and BPMs aren't nearly as accurate as serato - so that tells me it's the process yanno?

Am a bit late here but people don't really care what or which program you are using, the most important thing is that how do you utilize the program, how do you entertain the people because at the end of the day, they need good music no matter the program used. I've seen better Dj's doing cool scratches on different programs , My point here is we don't really care if you are auto mixing or manual mixing, all i care about are the following, (sound quality,transitions in and out , and perfection) meaning it depends on the users creativity.

I just switched to Virtual DJ 2 months ago, their technology is a head of other dj software and if you're a video Dj it has got the most stable picture. Being a good DJ depends on the music selection you put out to the crowd and no one cares whether you playing manually or using sync or old school gear except jealousy Djs and depends on the type gigs you go to. Technology is advancing, why would I drive a manual car if can afford an automatic car.

i agree. i have both, and i travel a lot, VDJ works on almost every system. Serato is always a pain to use on another system, all these dam licences. Also VDJ plays all FILES , audio and and video. I have so many new songs as music videos, and for Serato i have to download the mp3 version to play it. Or spend more money to buy their video feature.

The stems side VDJ stole from algoriddim djay as they did it first. I'd like to see how you find it with a review. Starting a DJ/entertainment agency I have found that yes for karaoke VDJ is great but apart from that forget it. I moved to algoriddim purley for the online integrations that have now spread around (Tidal/beatsource etc) but I have learnt to stick with it. It's definitely better flavoured for Apple OSX but the licence is £50 a year in the UK. Would be great to hear your opinion on this software.

Rekordbox: Festival and top Pro DJ use but missing some things. Worlds Top DJ's must use. Anyone can, but industry standard for professionals like it or not. Serato: Most wide spread, most versatile and seen. From Pro to smaller club DJ's, weddings, bday DJ's etc. Most commonly used. VDJ: Packed with features, can do everything the others do and more, but aimed at beginner DJ's and kids, but not exclusively. Looked down on by professional djs as being a beginner dj tool. All great software with pros and cons but there is a stigma with using each one and how you are perceived by using them similar to cell phone providers and pre paid would be. VDJ is looked down on at the top levels. It's amazing software but the stigma will live on since Pioneer has a firm hold on the top and Serato fills all the other spots. Great video!

Yea, I bit the bullet and tried VDJ, and Serato is WAY better for sure. I wanted to try VDJs live Stem separation which I admit is cool. But my overall workflow is just so much smoother on Serato. And I almost get an equal quality effect with Serato by simply cutting the highs and lows from the track I want vocals from, as I do when I isolate vocals using VDJ in a mix... oh well... ill play around with it more and try to match my serato settings to vdj and see how it goes. But Serato is quite a bit better all the way around.
