Thanks. Learned something new: the NOSEGMENT keyword. The biggest worry I have with a new index introduced to support a new query is what it will do to the old queries. It could eclipse other indices, and I don't have any easy way to see if it could happen or not.

You can use SQL tuning set for capture active SQL statements from prod DB, then create index in copy of prod, and run STS on copy.

Thanks I think in your example when you generate statistics it's the name of the index instead of the table name. SQL> begin dbms_stats.generate_stats( 'SCOTT', 'TEST'); end; /
