Pc level chip? Depends what build you're after problem is more compute requires power size and weight to get to current level pc you'll need a back pack, for example even a gtx 1660 has 5.5 teraflops and that struggles with vr and it has double the power of the xr2 gen2 that has 2.5 tflops. Also bare in mind that the 1660 may have 6gb of vram but that paired with dedicated d-ram of the users choose usually around 16 gb d-ram . Where as the xr2 gen 2 will utilise the on board ram on the quest 3 as both dram and vram meaning it's has 8 gb to share between the both. Meaning that the 6 gb of dedicated video memory is far superior and faster than that of the quest 3. Basically it will take a while for it to even match. even the avp could only real up to 3.5 teraflops now it had double the ram of the q3 at 16 but still it shared that memory between d-ram and v-ram. Where as the theoretical pc in this example has 5.5 tflops 6 gb of vram and let's 16 gb so that's 22 gb of ram (yes I understand it's different) and the build would be cheaper than the avp even with 3 quest 3s so you have 2 as a spare.

@@NightElfProductions "for example even a gtx 1660 has 5.5 teraflops and that struggles with vr and it has double the power of the xr2 gen2 that has 2.5 tflops" With true foveated rendering through eye tracking you can reduce the compute to mostly just the sharp, foveal area of your field of view, which is much smaller than people realise, less than 10% of each eyes retina. That's not to say that you get 10x perf for the same hardware, but it's certainly a drastic improvement for simply adding eye tracking sensors to the headset. Add in recent super resolution scalers + time/space warp + variable rate shading and you can squeeze a lot out of relatively low end hardware. Add in puck type solutions with decoupled compute/battery, and the fact that AMD are finally turning up the heat with a 40 CU APU with Strix Halo/Ryzen Max and there is serious potential for 'standalone' VR going forward - even if it needs to run a cable down from your head to power itself (which will both make the headset lighter on your head and potentially increase the possible battery size).

It would be awesome if all the major tech companies came together to figure out the AR Glasses issue. Make it a group development research project. Not to be used for financial gain on the original product they develop. That they could make spin offs of the original project they actually make through the join effort research. But They won't. Sometimes a join effort is needed in order to push and break through boundaries. I don't think one individual company can figure out the AR glasses issue. Look at Google Glass for example. Edit: My Dream VR Headset is the Bigscreem VR Headset size with apple passthrough and quest 3rd party app support. Software would be Steam compatibility and Meta OS base. Tracking would actually be base station + base station less tracking. The ability to remote play and then come back into a space with base stations with 360 precision tracking would be epic.

I'd like to see controllers replaced with wrist watch type controllers similar to the new motion controllers that you can get with Pico 4 Ultra. Those are great because you can put them on anything (baseball bat, tennis racket, basketball etc.) opening up the possibilities of mixed reality without needing specific controller peripherals.
@TheGFellowsАй бұрын
Games don't feel as good without a controller imo
@Dogappel28 күн бұрын
Why would you want that? The pico has these because they don't have camera based handtracking like on Quests. On Quest you can switch between controllers and hands. And a tennis racket feels much more realistic if you actually hold it and has haptic feedback. And since you don't want a controller you can just use handtracking and you still hold a racket in vr.
@LOOKATMYUSERNAM28 күн бұрын
Meta won t do that because hand tracking is better
@danielm516128 күн бұрын
@@Dogappel Wrist watches can be put on your ankles, then you have feet tracking also. Or lets say you want to play a boxing game like Beat The Bag but you want to wear boxing gloves? That would be possible with wrist tracking. Or put the tracker wrap on a baseball bat for accurate swing tracking instead of awkwardly attaching a controller to it as we do now. As these headsets become more goggle/glasses like and are intended to worn throughout the day then they will stop shipping with controllers (as Apple's headset did). That is where we are headed.
@danielm516128 күн бұрын
@@LOOKATMYUSERNAM Hand tracking is not better than having a physical tracker on you. And even if the hand tracking was used for hands, the trackers could be put on feet or an object you are holding (baseball bat, golf club etc.)

A cautionary tale for current and prospective Meta Quest VR headset owners (for sim'ing or gaming): I'm on day 22 of Meta holding my Quest headsets hostage. I've been using Oculus/Quest devices from the day they started making them (10 years ago?), and I have not been required to give my date of birth to Meta in all this time. But they recently demanded my DOB under threat of disabling my Quests, and they made good on that threat 22 days ago. Meta can metaphorically brick your headsets, any time they want, and for any reason they want, and you will have no defense against it. Conclusion: Think carefully before you BUY anything from Meta; The thing you BUY will not be yours.

But the moment the person enters the room and sees how much of a bad state its in there just going to do a 180 and then leave. Where is the utility? why is there pc software barely been updated since 2016? why did we lose access to oculus home and now have to choose between premade environments? where is the community features? cool tech thou. I'm looking forward to oled being used in headsets again

Quest 3s really needs to be $199 if we want to see the masses start to adopt. It needs to be a no brainer price as many will still pause on $299 as that has been the Quest 2 price and clearly while good, has not brought in the masses as Meta wants. The perfect headset would be something that isn't made by Meta. That runs Linux and has open source drivers... I have no reason to trust Meta in their insidious pursuit of owning the VR/AR industry. Personally I got burned with HP Reverb G2 when Microsoft discontinued Windows Mixed Reality, and HP went radio silent to its customers. Due to all of this, Valve is the only company left that I have some kind of trust in right now, and I hope "Project Deckard" will become everything we dream of.

Make one headset every 5-10 years. ones that can perform at a good level for that time frame. I don't want to buy the quest 3, because i know the quest 4 will be better. but then i wont buy the quest 4, because the 5 will be even better. its an endless loop of losing money because they just can't slow themselves down, they need that funding.

Quest 2 Pro is officially dead. Even the Quest Pro is now discontinued, and the reason is nobody will spend over a grand on a headset, as VR is still a nesh market. With the introduction of the Quest 3S, at a lower price point of the Quest 3, Meta would be better focusing on driving the Quest 3 price down, and stop with half bakes that they think fits. They have also now dropped the 128GB Quest 3 in order to roll out the Quest 3S, as the price point was so close to one another. If you ask me, they would have done a better job keeping this model on and binned the Quest 3S before it became an idea. The Quest 3S is over a year later than the Quest 3, and anyone buying in the Quest 3 will already have the 2023 models.
