Hey all! This next video has been in the making for some time, because it required some research. I started to get somewhat annoyed at recurring debates about the sense and nonsense of tournaments, so I decided to see whether the techniques described as 'Ernstenlich' in Lecküchner are in any way suitable for a modern HEMA tournament. Turns out they are, and quite spectacularly so. This also shows that tournaments are a context of their own, and simply expecting things that were designed to work in a historical context, might just work differently nowadays, or not at all. And that doesn't mean those parts of the fight books are pointless.
Fencers: Rens, Christiaan, Jeroen, Stefan, Oskar

Your cat had me in stitches. XD I see many people learning techniques wrong, or learning artifacts because they start trying to learn a technique they've just learned in sparring right away, reinforcing bad technique and wrong reactions. I absolutely love mindful slow sparring for that reason so both fencers have a little bit of time to actually think about the situation they're in and how to proceed from there. Once that muscle memory sets in from studying a movement pattern over and over, you can start to apply it in high pressure situations. (and often you discover something you're still doing wrong, but at that point it's easier to adjust what you've learned). Great video!

It really bothers me that at @2:30 you cut on one diagonal and the screen splits in the other

It bothers me too. Tried reversing the angle for a good hour and a half and gave up in frustration and disgust. :( I think I've reached the limits of self taught video editing here. :P

Maybe its because he is so fast you didn't see the other cut in the other direction....

Excellent video! The way you illustrate movement with your training partners brings these techniques to life!

Thanks for the nice vid! To me self-reflection on tension in fencing (and life in general) is vital to enjoy it more and become better/more in control. It also helps me to consciously relax my shoulders, abdominals and (hardest) face muscles during training and sparring to get rid of tension and get more control. I also like Arto Fama's saying; 'aim for perfection, accept mediocrity' as a way to tackle perfectionism which creates stress and tension. Helps me to enjoy the moment more and accept that I need to train more before expecting to be as good as I want to be.

That's a really interesting observation, and it's nice to see you've found ways to tackle this tension. From my experience, this sort of thing hits differently for everyone, so I think it's pretty important to have good coaches within our sport that can help people identify these things and help them work on it. :)

Not consciously, but I'm from a teaching background with a big focus on student initiative and I've also been hugely influenced by Kajetan Sadowski in how I structure classes, so both somewhat align with that method I think. :)
