Here's the thing. German soldiers from the rural small towns and villages of Germany had never seen a *car* before and the only large moving land object they knew of where trains. Agricultural tractors and mechanized farming was still uncommon. Horses were still the norm. Suddenly they're facing this large metallic object which seemingly lays its own tracks and picks it up behind it, with thick smoke coming out of it and making this horrible metal against metal noise as it gets ever closer. Bear in mind that this was a time when people still didn't have moving picture documentaries or films (pre-war films were just "short clips of regular entertainers and sceneries" ) with which to widen their perspectives and didn't know much of the outside world. For them it would have been hard to place some object into a category when they had seen nothing like it before. Imagine the feeling when firing at the thing with infantry rifles and machine guns just makes the bullets bounce off it? The size alone was scary enough. Since they were completely surprised by the appearance of these things can you imagine what their scared minds began to imagine? What other surprises to these things have? Will lots of soldiers pour out of those things once they stop? Are there even humans inside those things?? Are those inside those things as horrible as those machines they control?? How can anybody how built something so large and horrible? Once one or two soldiers start to panic I can imagine a whole of them abandoning their positions.
