I think the major reason for eye strain in VR is the dissonance from the fixed focal point to the screen in the headset (close to infinite) and the convergence point of both eyes to the objects in 3D, the closer it gets the worse it is because the eye naturally wants to focus to the real distance of the object

The HUD is rendered wrong if your eyes have to converge on it. Real HUDs use collimator lenses that make all of the light rays parallel to ensure that they always appear at infinity.

But part of the feature is that you can tell how far something is in VR with just one eye. If you'd use that then the only 3D effect would be with both eyes. It's just realistic that too near objects appear blurry.
@TheTEDfan
@TheTEDfan 3 жыл бұрын
Most VR headsets have fixed fixed focal length lenses. Fixed focus make your eyes lazy and if exposed for very long times you will start to have difficulty focussing over a wide range. This is just the lens in your eye. In addition the relation between true distance in reality and how much your eye lens has to focus will be broken in VR. This may result in your eyes sometimes taking longer to focus. Like a slow autofocus on an old SLR. That is even when they can. Especially kids should not only look at books or nearby screens but also play outside to get exposure to seeing things over a wide range of distances. It is no coincidence that young book worms often end up with glasses.

This is great, I had read some articles that where worded in a way that your eyes are gonna get damaged using VR headsets and about the danger of blue lighting in headsets, of course, it turns out VR is no worse than looking at your cell phone and VR is better because you move your head and eyes more to look around. Really it's funny how they talk about how we don't know the long term effects which is true, but given what we do know, it's highly unlikely this is going to mess up your eyes.

I just bought my Oculus Rift with touch controllers a few days ago, bearing in mine I have never ever tried VR before buying the headset. When I first starting using it I was blown away by how immersive it was, was not expecting it to be that good really. Shortly after your attention is drawn more towards the graininess and I guess that's what they call the screen door effect? Damn if the lenses actually showed real HD without the grainy texture I'd be in heaven. After wearing the headset for about 1 hour I started to feel my eyes ache, I felt abit dizzy at first which passed off but I suffered with headache soon after. I'm still currently getting the eyestrain, maybe I need my eyes tested but i've tried tweaking the slider for the lenses but still get the eyestrain. I could not play with it on for more than 2 hours at a time, it's just to much for my eyes. Maybe I will get used to it in time but the overall experience is pretty good to be honest.

Without my glasses things look blurry and fluffy as hell. But with glasses i can see fine. It sounds like this game isn't designed well for 3d if the convergence is so bad on the helmet gauges. I did 3 demos with the Vive and had no convergence issues or eye strain at all but didn't play this game. The 3D was very comfortable and natural. Nothing in any of these games should ever really cross into negative 3D space like in a 3D movie so a lot is up to the devs.

I really don't understand how Adrift made it as a launch title and why Oculus pushes it so hard. Yaw rotation, taking camera control from the player and convergence are all major issues in VR. The made me make changes to Technolust because of reported convergence issues with lense flares and objects being too close to the player. Seems like it's find if Adr1ft does it though.. *shrugs*

9:00 I’m pretty sure it’s not blue light but the UV (ultraviolet) light that damages eyes over time. Blue light is known to wake you up so some people avoid blue light at night, and there are monitor programs can turn your monitor to a warmer redder color at night
@mjherge
@mjherge 2 жыл бұрын
Blue light inhibits melatonin secretion. Melatonin is protective (anti-cancer, etc.) and puts you to sleep. One study found people who wore blue blocking glasses for four hours prior to bed had 30 min more sleep on average. 60+ year olds suffer cataracts which block light, somehow inhibiting melatonin secretion, and decreasing sleep duration in older adults. Cataract surgery is known to improve sleep.

If your at work, sawing at a screen for 8 to 12 hours, you need to lower the backlight of the screen, and use a much bigger monitor, so everything is naturally bigger, and very easy on the eyes. I saw a screen all day long, and never have issues with my eyes.
@affecttheeffect
@affecttheeffect 8 жыл бұрын
I recall from college physics that electromagnetic energy is proportional to its frequency which is why blue light with its relatively high frequency has a high energy among the visible light colors. The only thing that puzzles me is why violet has an even higher frequency and hence energy; one might wonder why combining a relatively low frequency red with a high frequency blue yields an even higher frequency violet. I guess that's the way the waves add up! It was interesting to hear Mark talk about how the high energy of blue wavelength relates to the blue light we see every day. Great interview Ian and thank you Mark, your comments were most enlightening! - Pete

+VirtualRealityGinger Oh you're welcome Ian, I think I found the answer to my question. It turns out that while purple is a combination of red and blue, violet is a unique color; as such violet has the highest frequency and hence energy of all the visible light colors. The response may be a little late but whatever :D ... No, if you superimpose Red and Blue light you will not get higher frequency photons. Your brain interprets the superposition of those two frequencies as Violet, but the photons do not carry a higher amount of energy. Our eyes are not a spectrometer, so what we see is not necessarily what is physically there.

I don't get anything negative when in VR. I have an HTC Vive and have been playing since last September. There are a number of settings that need to be set to properly use VR (especially with Vive) but nothing so far. I play an average 1 hour a day during the week and 3 to 4 each day on the weekend (great bow/arrow game and I've lost 20 pounds due to the exercise). If this optometrist is saying his eyes are converging as soon as he put the set on, it's not setup properly for him. We are all different and if I let someone else play my system, it has to be re-adjusted for them. I can tell when I start losing focus and I re-adjust the lenses and things get back to normal. Actually, I just had my annual optometrist visit just three weeks ago and he also did a field view test (due to a medical condition...tested every two years) and then we had a very good discussion with VR. He said he hasn't heard anything bad about VR but there are people who shouldn't be using this...it's not for everyone obviously. My vision is great, no headaches, no strain and no loss of near vision although I need glasses to read but that's due to my age. I'm an old-Big-kid playing games :) For those who want to try...look up online for shops in your area that provide play time for 30 minutes using VR. They are propping up everywhere.

+tehf00n Yeah, my understanding based on what Mark and I discussed is similar to what he says around 7:47 when I ask him about permanent damage. He talks about how people that do a lot of computer work needing a prescription to see their computer screen. Make sure to give yourself breaks every 15-20 minutes, even if it's just lifting the headset up and looking out at something in the distance for 15 seconds. It's a huge courtesy to your eyes and helps prevent needing vision correction in the future.

I think I heard the close up convergence strain is because the brain is used to having to converge the eyes to look at things close to the face but in VR everything is at the same focal distance. (infinity for Vive and 1.5m for Rift afaik). So the brain makes the eyes converge for the close objects and because they are actually at 2m focal distance, the eyes converging cause it to see double. The eyes deconverge to 2m to bring these close objects to focus but instinct and decades of experience of the real world make them converge again etc. This fight against instinct/autonomic focusing back and forth causes the eyestrain when trying to view close objects in VR. Once we can train ourselves not to converge and refocus in VR then that type of VR eyestrain will disappear. permanently

I've got oculus quest 2 the last week. I played few demo games and watched 3d videos. When I play games for 20 30 min i got tired and my eyes get tired. When I watched 360 videos I feel not well at all. The focusing all the time between the distance I can't see the objects near at all. They are buried and make me fell bad. About the games I played the saber beat and is ok i don't have problem but it makes me very soon tied. When I was watching some movies trailers on the app amazon prime video vr in the menu I see and feel well but when watching movie I start to feel discomfort and i don't think that can watch a hole one and half hour movie on the head set. I will return it and continue to play and watch movies on my pc monitor. Ps I didn't return it and got use it. Very nice 😊

You obviously get more tired doing something physically demanding than just watching something that doesnt need any depth and looking at near objects. Because 360 videos only take images in 1 perspective, no depth perception. Also, i get the feeling that your using the default facial interface, if you get a better interface, viewing things in vr for a long time will be more comfortable.

when the doc mentioned convergence, i didnt understand, but his explanation made sense. Try putting a picture right up to your face, almost touching your eyes, now try look at all the details. @howardlam6181

Mazmusic Ornament Then you didn't really understand. It's not a picture right up to your face. It's all the graphics are on focus on the infinite plane (super far away) despite some of the objects looking like they are up close. This confuses your brain and sends to wrong signal to your eyes and your coordinate system.

My eyes don't really work together. The focus on my left eye is very bad. My left eye is more like peripheral vision its so weak. I had an eye test done in January and no matter how strong the optometrist made it there was no difference. I have a -7.5 in each eye on my glasses. I can't see 3D

I have no depth perception and I want a Virtual reality device for watching moives on yoru ipohne and I'm legally blind. I understand that device is suposed to make you feel like you're immersed in the movie. One eye is better than the other. I feel like that in an imax theatre. So would I feel like that with such a device?

In this video they chose one of the most uncomfortable games on the Oculus. And about the Blue spectrum, I think that Blue color is also the one less brightened because in amoled displays is also the color with less time life
@VirtualrealitygingerOfficial
@VirtualrealitygingerOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
The idea was to put him in one of the most uncomfortable games to discuss if, when at its most extreme, VR is damaging (which in his professional opinion, it was not). If I had just put him in a typical game where the eyes don't do anything to compensate for the visuals being presented by the headset, it wouldn't have been a very interesting/insightful video.

Some studies have shown that outdoor light reduced risk for myopia. I wonder if it's related to the blue light or not. I think the benefit was high-intensity light exposure that provokes some kind of chemical production in the eye that, in turn, prevents or slows the eyeball lateral growth. Anyway, check it out: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/04/160406124740.htm

+VirtualRealityGinger so it really comes down to the game's 3d design, programming and rendering as to what is seen. Everything I've played so far on my Dk2 has not given me any eyestrain. I have played Eve Valkyrie, Project Cars and E.D. Horizons for hours without breaks as well as the Lab on Steam VR. Part of the amazement when ruining these experiences is the fact that looking around at every little detail just looks so natural to me like I'm really in that rendered reality. Thanks for the video to get perspective and observations from someone who is in the vision field.

+fsp48 Yeah none of those gave me eye strain either, which makes sense given what Mark says (about distance not being difficult or strenuous to see). It's pretty much only close up stuff that gives eye strain, due to the extreme convergence. Or at least that's what I picked up from our interview.

Thx for the vid. I've been greatly concerned to get into VR due to vision concerns. With that said I think I will try to do no more than 2 hour VR sessions with 2-4 breaks during that time and only a few days a week. I seriously think doing VR for several hours at a time on a daily basis could cause some serious issues as I ran into eye focus atrophy issues a few years ago for sitting at my pc desk without taking breaks and this is even worse as its within a couple of inches. Imo use VR in moderation.

This person IS NOT A MEDICAL DOCTOR. He is an optometrist. In some part of the world, Optometrist carries the title doctor via "Doctor of Optometry" but they are not medical doctors. They may have some medical knowledge related to their field of optometry only. I would advise amending the thumbnail to avoid such confusion. I am a doctor with a registrar post in diagnostic bio medical imaging. The major concern of VR is the neurology effects rather than ophthalmology effects. In fact the the eyes only transmit the information to the brain via the optic nerve and optic chasm. There is no short term ophthalmic side effects noted yet. Though there have been concerns of long term conditions (eg, cataracts) due to the distance of the screen to the users.
@VirtualrealitygingerOfficial

I'm not sure where you're from, but this was discussed at length in the Reddit post when this video was created. In the United States, although not MDs, optometrists are absolutely physicians and held to the same medical standards within their expertise as medical doctors are in theirs. To start your comment off, "This person is NOT A DOCTOR," and then imply that this is fraudulent in most of the world, even though the medical requirements on ODs is VERY different in other countries than where Mark is a practicing physician - you're spreading the very level of misinformation that you're attempting to prevent.
@bluefelcon
@bluefelcon 8 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, i ve double check with U.S doctor tittles. indeed optometrist are given dr tittles via " Doctor of Optometry". My apologies then.. In the UK the title doctors are quite restricted to avoid confusion with medical doctor vs non medical doctor. Ill amend the above post but will still state that he is not a medical doctor as in some parts of the world assumed doctor = medical doctor.
@VirtualrealitygingerOfficial
@VirtualrealitygingerOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that. This is something I was completely unaware of going into this video too, as ODs are referred to as "Dr. ______" universally in the United States. I'll make sure to strictly stick to "optometrist" for future videos, to avoid international confusion.
