Zenka's sculptures and street art paint a picture of where we are in time and where we are headed based on new developments in virtual and augmented reality. Finding new ways to visualize accelerating change begs the question: how do we prepare for fast change in the knowledge age?
Zenka is a Los Angeles based artist who makes art for the galactic age. She is known for her augmented reality prints, raku VR sculptures and high tech street art. Her art is held in the collections of Fortune 500 companies, such as Google and Delta Airlines and tech startups such as Survios, Merge, Senetics and StarVR. Zenka will take us on a journey through time. Her art paints a picture of where we are in time and where we are headed based on developments in virtual and augmented reality. Finding new ways to visualize accelerating change begs the question: how do we prepare for exponential change in the Knowledge Age?

For many years I've been thinking that virtual reality would fundamentally change the world; allow humanity to take a next step of sorts, very much like Zenka mentions in the video. A new era, or like she put it a new age. It'll revolutionize education, work, and people's social lives most of all. I imagine children traveling on virtual adventures, learning by experiencing. Sort of like a virtual version of the cartoon "The Magic School Bus". Being able to attend schools and lectures wherever you are in the world, not limited by what is local to you. Heck, since we're here, virtual TED talks maybe? You can work in environments that would be impossible or unreasonable in reality; grand virtual workspaces letting you do whatever your mind can think of, all from the comforts of your own home. This would also grant you more time to spend with friends and family. And speaking of friends and family, the social consequences of virtual reality would be profound. You can talk to someone the other side of the world as if they were in the same room. Face to face, so to speak, not just their voice but their mannerisms and being. Like in the experiment where VR was used to sway votes, the inevitable result is empathy. Much like the internet granted us instant communication across the globe, I believe virtual reality will do the same but on a far greater scale. The internet connected the world. VR has the potential to unite it. Heckin' world peace, mate. At least the best possibility for it I've been able to think of.

Its not as perfect for education as she makes it sound, it still wont teach you algebra or other very abstract knowledge, it is great to teach practical skills though. Edgar Dale didnt say that 10% 20% 90% thing, that is an education myth that just wont die.

Augmented reality can bring so many new and wonderful experiences to students across the world. Virtual field trips to learning about other countries and cultures is a huge benefit. It also provides equitable access to more costly experiences in their own communities.

I do wonder, neither with a positive or negative intent when I say this...what will happen to the 'real' world whilst we are mostly concerned about the virtual one. What remains of physicality, jobs, income etc? Also, who will eventually control this virtual landscape? I can imagine that much like the internet in it's early days it's 'the people' but eventually the majority of this Virtual Landscape will be dictated by the highest bidders. Much like how Google and Fb's current algorithms etc dictate the current one. I'm excited about VR but it's always viewed perhaps little too Utopian, consumerism is powerful thing that influences and shapes how we see reality and how these large corporations want us to see reality. This will still be prevalent in VR, if not more than ever. It's going to be a domineering force in this virtual landscape, yet it's rarely bought up.

This is a really good point. Imagine the ease of influencing decisions via VR/AR. Even through a 2D screen, we are bombarded with ads and shadowed by tech listening in. It's scary what VR could become in the wrong hands. IMO we should sort out issues like net neutrality first before diving into these things. They can go very wrong.

If I equate it with a smartphone for a moment... We are so obsessed with new tech. We need to ask people how many are using current technology for knowledge gain, for changing their beliefs about others, assuming it was produced for that. If living in the tech world is all we've known, we have never lived. Society is already gripped with lowering connections and values among people that a smartphone has brought. So many of us are getting out of this trap and looking for real experiences. Saving money, taking a long trip, meeting people, on the way to the Taj Mahal, vs putting on the set any time we want - which one of these makes us value that iconic landmark more? If the plan is to bring it to the masses, and there are no rules for how to use it, it will end up messing us up. Let it be with people who can make good use, scientists, doctors, for example. Have a survey done on people who have used it for 15-20 years (provided they have lived in real life all the while before, knowing what to do) and then we can compare the results on their well being then and now. That part - "your body cannot tell it's not real", is a warning sign.

Augmented reality smart glasses can terminate eyestrain and myopia. Termination of eyestrain Similar in principle to an ophthalmoscope shining light into the eye, the NED optical engine of AR glasses actively projects computer-generated images(CGI) onto the retina. 1. Once any refractive errors are corrected, people of any age can receive the CGI clearly via the retina; this indicates that the light projected from the NED is indeed parallel light. 2. Once the refractive error is corrected, the CGI carried by the parallel light is naturally focused on the retina without any accommodation. 3. By extension of the accommodation-vergence reflex, no convergence. Therefore, there is no contraction of the ciliary and medial rectus muscle. So by using augmented reality glasses, humans can read at close range with both the ciliary and medial rectus muscles relaxed, and the eyes will never get tired. Prevention of myopia AR glasses can be turned into AR computer by appending a piece of opaque material on the front of the screen to turn the see-through display into a non see-through one and installing a personal computer operating system on its host. • The AR Computer is equipped with a light-transmittable part around the opaque display. The opaque display allows the user to face the sun and use sunlight as the background light source. The opaque display protects the eyeball and the macula, while the light-transmittable part allows the peripheral retina to come into contact with sunlight. • The AR Computer can be equipped with convex lenses around the opaque display. The convex lens can shorten the focal length of the light around the opaque display (i.e. the macula area) and change the light that is originally focused on the outside of the retina to the inside, turning the relative peripheral hyperopia into peripheral myopia. • With the head raised, the light-transmittable part of AR Computer provides a wide field of view, eliminating the phenomenon where the peripheral visual field is deprived when reading with the head down. Thus, the AR computer can simultaneously overcome all the major factors contributing to myopia.

Look for Edgar Dales Cone of experience, the 20-90% numbers are a myth that has been debunked though, Edgar dale just said that practical experience is better for teaching concrete things and abstract things are better taught through (for example) presentations.

I have a Bachelors in Psychology. Do I need to get an advanced degree to work in making AR/VR more user friendly? Or can I jump with just a BA in psychology? Thanks for any answers to my question.

Depends on your end goal. If you're trying to lead a team of folks to test out different AR/VR devices for improvements on accessibility then you'll need to get a MS degree or even move onto a PhD if you want to end up further into research. Other than that you can still assist on teams as a research assistant/intern if you have applicable work experience to back your credibility. All the best!
