So, your ultimate personal favorite knife is the Bark River Fox River 3V with Black and White Ebony scales. You literally put your blood, sweat, and tears (I'm counting your rant about BR's fat blade geometry a few videos back as tears) into that knife. I feel like you've always known that a FR in 3V was going to be your favorite knife of all time (ever since you got your first one), but you needed to know 'why' it was your favorite - through experience/research/perfecting your craft. Awesome.

I was never confident in my sharping skills until I found this channel, I made sure to watch many hours of these videos before I sharpened my bark river knives, now I can do it properly. Thanks Dr Wako!!!

This is one of your 5 necessary videos for knife people to understand and learn. And for the knife makers for sure. I already know many knife makers like bark river who consider your concerns.

Before flatting stones it helps to draw squiggly lines across entire surface of stones. As you flatten the lines will disappear where flat leaving only unflat areas. Flatten until all lines go away then check with straight edge in all directions. Hold stone at eye level with edge of ruler on stone and look for light under edge of ruler. Where you see light is where the stone won't be flat. Hope this has helped you sir!!! Kindest regards always! Tim

Mr.Wako Sir, a quick and cheap way is the go outside and use a cinder block to flatten the sharpening stones. This is a very wonderful video, thank you. I wish that you would sharpen one of my knives.

To grappolidipalma: you are %100 correct on telling us the truth about the apex and WEPS system for sharpening. They are not only toys, but can never convex. The only thing the systems are good for, is to sell The chosera stones at a super premium price tag! Re: the thickness on the stones. You will probably go through 6 sets of the weps, chosera stones to one set of the standard factory sets!

Another good video Doc. I think you're right about flattening your sharpening stones on a regular basis. Have you considered tungsten carbide powder on a large, cheap piece of glass? If the glass is about the same size as your rubber mat you can use it in the same way as your first, expensive flattening stone. You know when the glass is going out of true by the increased opaqueness in the centre. If you do a figure-of-eight you will grind your sharpening stone flat v quickly. Thanks for posting

I think water stone is easy to make my intended convex bevel and final angle. Stropping is basically for edge maintenance and cannot restore micro chips without increasing edge angle. So when the edge angle goes too deep after repeated stropping, I use my #400, #800, and #2000 stones to shallow it down. It is very fast and efficient. Sandpapers are tricky to me. Thanks.

I think they originally sell with bases glued to the stone, but European and US importers have special ordered them without bases from Naniwa. The boxes usually still say "with base" even when they come without bases, since it's a "special ordered" option.

Wako-San my friend. Just some notes that I offer with my hope they will help your sharpening efforts. Get a flat metal straight edge ruler to check flatness of stones, check corner to corner on a diagonal as well as top to bottom, side to side. Must flatten using diagonal strokes in both corner to corner directions in addition to top to bottom, side to side or will not get flat!!! Also,start sharpening from edge, not middle! Or concave will be constant problem. Use all of stone not just middle!

Mr Wako - I have never sharpened a knife on a wet stone in my life. Do you recommend fox river A2 or 3V? I will watch more of your videos to learn the art of sharpening. You are truly a master and I am humbled to watch you perform your craft.
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 9 жыл бұрын
JoseChung21 A2 Fox River looks like not having contour on its handle, while 3V Fox River has nice contour for hunting purpose. And 3V is not very hard to sharpen in comparison to A2. 3V holds twice longer than A2 at least. So I recommend you 3V version. Soon they will make 3V Fox River LT. But the LT might have a steeper micro bevel from the shallower main bevel, and can be tougher to remove it from. Thanks.

In Japan All Chosera and Shapton stones come with an atteched base. So we cannot use the other side of the stone. I think stones without a base are better, using an universal stone holder. Thanks.

Please explain- So you used to convex blades on sand paper in order to keep the convex profile. If you re-profile a convex blade on a flat stone, don't you turn it into a flat grind? which will be too thin?

Have you ever tried a DMT large flattening plate. I believe that it is one of the fastest ways to flatten stones. This is because; diamonds are the hardest/fastest cutting material. What do you think?

Your water stones are on wood blocks. Did you purchase them that way? Sharpeningsupplies.com sells a universal water stone holder for about $19.00. The Chosera stones they sell don't come with the wood blocks. I ordered the Chosera 1000 and 2000 micron water stones but am thinking about also getting the 5000 micron stone

I agree hand sharpen just takes some practice and after you "get it" its like riding a bike. The "systems" are easy way outs. Just my opinion.

@grappolidipalma
@grappolidipalma 11 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right, there things are an "easy way out" but you know, with very limited results (only "V-edge", only on some kind of blades). I am pretty sure, no suck device can sharp my razor, or my axe (both are EDC items in my life). I am here to listen VIRTUOVICE video while touching up the axe (all afternoon in the woods to collect firewood for my stove); edge pro can not do it... ...It is not my business anyway, got it... :)

Edge Pro is a kid of toy. It will never make you happy. Pivot sharpening system never makes intended edge angle at intended portions of the edge. 400/800/2000 Chosera stones and DLT Two Sided Paddle Strop should make you very happy. If you need a very flat bevel, 3000 stone can be better than 2000. Thanks.

Don' t listen to Nutnfancy, he is a nice guy but hey... Every one have limits... :) If you have to learn "hand sharpening" King stone are enough, you will be not able to recognize the differences and probably will ruin the stones (so in my opinion don' t need to spend the extra money for Kyocera -WHEN LEARNING-). The "apex" or any other " sharpening system" are toys; good to nothing (no offense to everyone that use it...). Start to the right foot, hand sharpening forever :)

Tony : 'Responding to your concept .Cinder blocks may not be that good of an idea. The extremely large abrasives particular matter in the blocks, come off fairly quickly and get imbedded into the water stone! Then the water stone will be flat, but will get a new grit size added to it!
