Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books, and they tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses them, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War is rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

@@WeaponDetective I did miss the mention of Swedish submarines in the video, maybe because they are that stealthy? ;) But yeah,, while subs are designed to sink ships, the corvettes seems more multi role. so they will probably have a lot of other tasks to do. such as laying mines and engaging smaller boats.

Sweden's contribution to NATO should be its fleet, coastal forces and air-force and should the priority to strengthen in the coming years. The Swedish army might be lacklustre but we don't need as strong an army when part of NATO. Sweden is still a small country and should provide what they are best at and that would be to project power into the Baltic sea and air domain. A combination of a few more upgraded Visby and a few more submarines and an expanded air-force to at least 120 JAS and some more dedicated air reconnaissance planes and helicopters would make Sweden a good partner for the other countries in the Baltic sea. Sweden should leave the ground forces to other countries in terms of strength. In terms of army it should probably be the Northern area that should be strengthened the most so Sweden can support in the North with Finland and Norway if a conflict with Russia would ever happen. The risk of invasion from the sea on the Swedish mainland should be next to no chance of happening with a strong Navy and Air-force. Protection of the Baltic states on the ground should be given to other countries who can provide that security allot better than Sweden can.

You know, in the event of an actual war, I believe that Sweden's hundred or so CB90 class patrol vessels are going to have more of an impact. Their small size makes them adept at inserting specialist commando teams, and they can also carry a Hellfire missile launcher, which can provide good ATGM coverage as well as short range anti ship capability, and their small size combined with Russia's inadequate multirole aircraft fleet also make the little boats hard to kill.

You often hear that the top speed of the Visby Class is 40 knots. However, a few years back I was visiting friends in the archepilagio of stockholm and we had heard that its sister ship, HSwMS Helsingborg was in the neighbourhood so we set out in my friends boat to try to get a glimpse of it. We found her steaming out to sea at what we only can assume was all ahead flank. Now, my friends boat can do 55-58 knots in calm seas. We held a steady speed of around 50 knots and we couldn’t catch up with it. After almost an hour we decided to give up an returned. It is a SERIOUSLY fast ship.

Visby, as engineered, is a brilliant ship but also a perfect example of the incompetence of Swedish politicians, ant to some extent FMV. Ideas like saving money by underdimensioning the helo facilities, and then having to buy custom helicopters to Swedish requirements, at costs many times higher than buying COTS. Also, planning for (small) helicopters and then scrapping the idea, leaving an empty hangar. Not to mention the costs incurred by all the delays in decisions on AA etc.

I am really amazed why those navy ships are so big and need so many people on them. It seems very stupid. In WW2 having 1000 people on a battleship, that's insane. I get technology was different back then. But really if you have a boat, you sail around, you operate a radar, you shoot rockets, how many people do you really need for that? One person steering, one navigating, one manning the radar, one operating the weapons, one doing communications, one doing electronic warfare, and a captain. That's it! Once you have things like a mess, a gym, cleaning crew, repair crews, engine crews, helicopter crews, things get completely out of hand. They should keep these ships small and lean.

I guess the priority for Sweden is buying a bunch of RBS 15 mark IV missiles rather than additional corvettes. With the 300 km range of the Gungnir, most of the Baltic sea will be in range from the Swedish coast and Gotland island. Also, if deterring the Russians from venturing into Swedish waters, perhaps adding more A26 subs to the fleet instead would be the better choice of vessel?

The Visby class, while interesting and intriguing, is nothing more than a "harassing" vessel. It's anti-ship missiles are its most potent asset but by newer standards it's not the threat it used to be. The radar profile is outstanding and goes a long way to defeating the "kill chain" and given Sweden's past, the Visby was the right vessel...not too threatening to cause the Russians to attack, yet potent enough to discourage small "adventures" from hostiles. But let's not kid ourselves, the Visby is a Corvette, it's a Coastal ship and it is lightly armed and armored, It's fast and stealthy but modern naval warfare requires very advanced radar suites and strong air defense measures...ask the Russians, they'll tell you all about it.

There have been great changes in the definitions of frigates and corvettes over time. Currently, the frigate is an open-sea combat and escort ship. Some frigates have even area-air defence capability. The Corvettes mostly serve under the umbrella of the air force in coastal waters. Due to the traditional definition, the corvettes are smaller than the frigates. Today, they are between 500 and 2500 tons. But, there are also frigates below this tonnage limit. It's hard to talk about the best corvette. Different countries have the best corvettes for their needs. Our favourite, though, is Sa'ar 6.

I don't think any nordic country needs bigger ships than corvettes that are based in the Baltic. Norway/Denmark might need Frigates for their Atlantic fleets tho. @Benkt Löfgren "Norway/Denmark might need Frigates for their Atlantic fleets tho"? Norway operates four heavy frigates/destroyers of the 'Fridtjof Nansen' class. These are vessels of more than 5,000 tonnes displacement, equipped with the AEGIS combat system which means that they have area air defence capability. Norway also operates six 'Ula' class submarines. The three Nordkapp class ships of the Norwegian Coastguard could be considered as secondary frigates. Their replacements will be larger and more capable, with the ability to operate two helicopters. Denmark operates three 'Iver Huitfeldt' class air defence frigates, and two Absalon class hybrid frigate/transports. The Danish navy also has six large, very capable, offshore patrol vessels/frigates, with one more building.

@JollyOldCanuck
@JollyOldCanuck Жыл бұрын
@@user-yj8vj3sq6j The Visby Class Generation II has some anti-air capabilities, but I think the main advantage would be that a Visby Class corvette requires less than 50 crew to operate and is relatively cheap to operate compared to British frigates or American destroyers and the Gotland class submarine is relatively affordable and can fielded in large numbers by a small navy. I think the Swedish Jas Gripen E/F would also be suitable for the Taiwanese air force as it is designed to be maintained by a relatively inexperienced crew of conscripts with only the pilot having to be fully trained. Essentially, the Swedish designed their equipment to be easily operated by an army of conscripts supporting a small core group of professional soldiers which fits Taiwan's situation perfectly.

@@jeffi854 I am in full agreement with you. The U.S. Navy would need to make some minor modifications to suit their specific needs (I personally think they should modify it to carry 12 anti ship missiles instead of 8, and the U.S. Navy would probably use the NSM missile instead of the RBS-15 since they are already using it and have it in their inventory). I also think it would be a good idea to add 8 Mk41 VLS cells to equip the vessel with the VL-ASROC anti submarine rockets, which themselves are desperately in need of an upgrade in range from 12 nmi to 75 or even 100 nmi, which would make this ship an absolutely lethal submarine hunter. I think they should also equip it with the maritime launched version of the hellfire missile that they developed for the LCS ships. This would protect it from small naval drones of the type currently being used in Ukraine that are wreaking havoc on the Russian navy. It wouldn’t hurt to equip it with a naval version of the NASAMS for air defense as well. These modifications would of course increase the cost, but you’d have a small, inexpensive warship (compared to an Arleigh Burke Destroyer) that would be very well armed and could go toe-to-toe with any warship in the world. It would sit perfectly with the US Navy’s “distributed lethality” concept.

I would have no doubt that the designers are hard at work right now getting something ready that can actually fight and do real damage.

Armoured ships aren't made anymore, since the naval weaponry rendered it all but useless. Reason the Visby is ugly is that stealth (radar and IR) was considered more important than looks. Main issue with the lack of teeth is political, where the various governments simply did not see any reason to spend money getting the planned weapon systems in place. See "Genomförandegruppen" on Wikipedia. With the attitude finally changed, I expect the Visby upgrades (and a lot of other cancelled/mothballed purchases) to get pushed through in short order. The biggest hurdle atm is the lack of trained staff, as someone has to teach the teachers to allow the needed expansion, and as a brigade commander or ship commander taken from the street takes 8-10 years to become fully competent, the lead times is what slows the process down.
