Hey Rahdo, great review thanks! Really appreciated. You can definitely play 2 player with a pseudo 3rd player (the automa). The only minor issue is that they tend to take more Debts and Deeds than human players - making the game a lot shorter. You could also add another 2 or 3 Debts/Deeds to each deck to counteract this.

hey SJ! thanks for the suggestion... would you go so far as to call that... an official variant!?!? :)
@SteveAMcPherson4 жыл бұрын
Would be great to have an official 2-player variant with the automa. Would pre-populating the board with a certain number of building spaces and castle spaces taken up at the start of the game also work?
@sammacdonald3374 жыл бұрын
@@rahdo most welcome. I haven't tested it enough to call it official, though I'm most happy for players to come up with their own versions that work best for them :). We love playing at 2 player as is, it's really fast and still a good chunk of interaction (especially the battle over Poverty & Prosperity shines at 2P).

It took me quite a few hours to study the rule book and walk through the gameplay! Amazing game design, the spacial/visual layout is so well integrated with each element. Once you learn step by step everything just click together smoothly!

Have 4 kickstarts hoepfully arriving in the next 2 months, and this is the one that has me chewing my doorframe in anticipation for that delivery van arriving! (doesnt help I added Paladins to the pledge so have both shipping in the same box). Played it on TTS and was a great puzzle as trying to figure out where you want to be....not only next turn but two or three turns after.

It's a great series. Tried this on Tabletopia and I found it a bit more complex than Paladins IMO. Not to say paladins of the West Kingdom isn't complex for some. It took me a while to grasp the concept but after watching this and other play-throughs, It all clicks. Rather well. Still, Paladins is the better game for me. I've only play Architects 2 player with the Automa. It just gives us a little more tension rather than just arresting the other player because she//he's racking up resources like crazy. Paladins' Solo mode is awesome too. I haven't used it playing as a 2 player game but the 2 player game is pretty good as is. Still though, having more options on the central board would be interesting with an added 3rd player. Thanks for the Run-through. Looking forward to seeing where you placed this on your September Round-up. Also looking forward to seeing your run-through of Endless Winter, which I'm anxious to learn more about and won't be able to see until late October. Games with art by The Mico usually piques my interest. Anyway rambling. Looking forward to this when it arrives.

some questions! 1. paladins was a perfect game for 2. here gameplay affected more from player count? does setup on the board change with 2? 2. paladins had no theme for us. felt like moving around recources. is this thematicly signifacanlty better? 3. havent see playthrough. does this castle mechanic have any semi coop feel? 4. i dont like in architects that you can force game to end fast. paladins has fix round. can you force end game here?
@rahdo3 жыл бұрын
1) paladins is a better 2p game i'd say, because there's no real area majority stuff like viscounts. viscounts still works great as a 2p, but paladins feels like there's no compromises. 2) viscounts is much more thematic, largely because you're an actual character in the world, moving around, interacting with things. you're not a disembodied administrative force, like you are in paladins. 3) not really. it's a race to the top area control type thing. 4) this one is not fixed rounds, though the end game doesn't really "sneak up on you"... you can see it coming and plan for it

Finally got our copy. Definitely agree that this is a better than good game and a solid addition to the series. HOWEVER - I don't understand why this company is so ideologically opposed to providing a score pad for their games. Even just one freaking page I could scan and copy would help!

Which one is your favorite of the West Kingdom series? Thanks
@rahdo Жыл бұрын
viscounts actually. i think architects has the coolest concept if you're playing at higher player counts, and paladins might have the strongest design over all, but for me and jen, viscoutns is by far the most fun :)

Agree randomness of Paladins can be a let down. Think having an open market of one per player plus blind draw option might work better for wall cards to mitigate that luck. Don’t mind the randomness in the Suspicion cards. Reveal of goals might be too random, as well. Might sell after another play or two. Thanks for the final thoughts on comparing them.

This is the problem for AI in a competitive game. There is usually less interaction between the player and the AI in a solo game. This is usually more fun and more interaction playing solo in a coop game.

Our group found "Viscounts" in 2 player setup rather dull. There's some interaction on the castle but apart from that everybody's just minding their own business. Furthemore the whole debt/deed stuff is completely unneccessary. It adds lots of rules w/o introducing significantly more depth. The whole mechanism feels pasted-on just to make sure that the game will finally end. For us, "Viscounts" is definitely the weakest of all three. Not a bad game but in summary I'd rate: Paladins 8-9 out of 10 Archtects 7-8 Viscounts 6-7 (6 in two-player setup)

well one thing to consider is that shem has a co-designer on the west kingdom games, so i think that will give them a different feel compared to north sea :)
