Let’s figure out the Mystery of Magnus The Diva. The Deep Dive. They gave Magnus 2 rounds to change, he didn’t. Would it not be belittling to Nepo, if he was to change but not Magnus? But why the drama to quit? 1. Magnus made some bold claims in the take take take video on his top rivals. He basically reiterated that he had no clear rivals besides Alireza and Hikaru. He’s also been piling on classical for being a bad format that lets weaker players cover up their weaknesses through huge time to apply theory cramming. But in this short time control tournament he drew against 2500s, and lost to lazavik (definitely not a regular 2500 like Magnus’s other opponents). So after round 8, and being at 5 points, Magnus was very low down the rankings and most likely would not have won or perhaps even finished top third if he continued with this whole tournament. So to avoid his ego getting hurt, and having to eat his words before the tournament, the diva decided to snatch the spotlight and perhaps make this seem like he’s fighting against the Soviet Union military on his own. Now all the casuals with his dna trace at the back of their throats will say the world rapid and blitz champions are not legitimate, ignoring Magnus’s terrible show in the tournament. 2. Magnus wants to be remembered in legend status like Fischer and Kasparov. Forget their strength and accolades, these two not Ono pushed forward chess theory but also had myths around them. Magnus wants to be known more than just Norwegian Rain Man with a sheltered upper middle class childhood and mostly just reduced to e-celeb athlete in modern safe and cushy times. So when he realised 2900 rating wasn’t possible because of overall rating deflation, and chess theory is saturated plus Magnus was never a theory innovator, so he felt a bit lost on how to go forward. Fischer went crazy and a fugitive. Kasparov went against the soviet political machine, and later tried to run for Russia president. But Magnus is like a grown child insanely good at chess, but otherwise pretty normal. No mythical stature. He even wondered how to explore options around chess. When nothing much seemed clear, he decided to pick a fight with fide and promote freestyle chess to have his Kasparov moment of breaking away and having two separate chess divisions. Hence the little childish tantrum like rebellion against fide, backed up by streamers having more clout in chess now and they’re all his minions. 3. For everyone saying, “it’s jUst jEaNz tho”. What is chess at its core as an industry? It’s a spectacle. It sustains itself monetarily and otherwise because of viewership (online, or live tickets, and sponsorships predicated on that viewership). In that regard it is no different at its core business principle than onlyfans, trashy comedians, and other entertainment content. The reason everyone values it is because players devote their lives to developing super human cognitive skill at it? Why? Because they and us fans view chess as something important, prestigious, and serious. Now if dress codes don’t matter at an important event like the literal historical world championship title of rapid and blitz, then doesn’t all this just become casual spectacle? The only reason we respect chess super gms more than content creators and influencers (despite the latter being richer) is because we realise that all this official chess field has gravitas. Without that very gravitas, no one would care about Magnus being the best chess player. He’d be just like some Acoustic Kid genius at the spelling bee contest. It’s because centuries of prestige and respect and seriousness has been developed and preserved for this game of chess, is someone like Magnus able to strut around like “Oh I’m quirky, not like these other nerds. I’m a cool acoustic board game genius!!” So cut the bull and stop glazing Magnus so much. He already has a girlfriend

If a player fails to fulfil his/her duties listed in Articles 4.10.1, 4.10.4-4.10.9, he/she can be penalised by FIDE Council as follows: 5 % of his/her prize money shall be forfeited to the Organiser and a further 5 % to FIDE for each breach. In cases of serious misconduct, the player may be disqualified from the event.”

He was issued a $200 fine to begin with. Refusal to change clothes "immediately" instead of the next day as Magnus offered is what resulted in "DQ." Still think that was a reasonable compromise that the Chief Arbiter should've allowed for the fine. EDIT: As the video explains from 1:09 - 1:36 , he was not technically disqualified, but the restricting him from round 9 play effectively eliminates the ability to make a podium finish were he to continue playing round 10 onward... it's definitely in the spirit of a "DQ." Also Zaven Andriasian at the same event got away with "trousers" that were made to look just like jeans, so this is still just arbitrary powertripping by the arbiter any way you slice it.

We are decidedly not talking about something offensive here, anyone who considers Magnus’ outfit today offensive needs to get checked out. Again, I was there, the man looked sharp, sharper than me certainly, 10x sharper than Hans Niemann. Finally, my understanding is that FIDE introduced this dress code in 2018 against the will of a good chunk of top players.

For people saying Magnus should just follow the rules. It’s like during the case of the female IM again, where the arbiter made a mistake of marking the match as a loss when she clearly drew. Although they corrected that, she was already matched against someone as if she lost. And FIDE stated they aren’t able to change the match-up because of the ‘rules’. Remember, the intention behind making the rule is more important. They made that rule in order to ensure fair play, yet in this case, following that very same rule will be unfair to the female IM. The case against Magnus, and even Ian is similar. They made rules like those to ensure the players look presentable in front of the camera for the viewers and the sponsors. They already wore a formal and presentable attire when they came. Do they really have to be so strict with implementing ‘that’ rule when it literally doesn’t cause any inconvenience to anyone? No. This is just a clear case of a power play. Ian complied because he didn’t want more trouble, and they let that get to their head. Magnus was already fined and he himself stated he will follow that rule for tomorrow’s match. When they kept insisting and even threatened him with disqualification, as he said, it became a matter of principle. Should he bow down even more when he already tried complying with them so much over such a rule? Clearly he didn’t, and now FIDE has to accept the consequences of letting that power get to their head.

Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the dress code (or even the whole "behavior code") in chess is ridiculous, this definitely is not a "pants" issue. This is FIDE trying to reassert themselves as the owners and controllers of chess because of the Freestyle Chess drama (and also probably the fact that Magnus kinda "devalued" the World Chess Champion title nor participate in the last Candidates)... The thing is that I think FIDE just shot themselves on the foot: they probably didn't think Magnus would just drop out of the Blitz portion of the tournament. Now they are stuck as the guys who disqualified the best chess player in history because of pants AND burned the bridges for any "peaceful" resolution to the Freestyle Chess thing.

Nepo was fined for his sheakers, he changed them and continued playing. Magnus was observing the dress code before, but now suddenly it became so super important to him to wear jeans. If it is a power play, it is power play on the Magnus's part to own chess completely. He became co-owner of chess24, then chesscom moving him to the helm of all online chess. He own or co-owns more and more major tournaments, his only remaining obstacle to essentially own both online and offline chess is FIDE. If he dismantles them, it will be a game belonging to him and his buddies And of course, he owns Gotham, he owns Hikaru, he owns the vast majority of all chess influencers. At this point it's almost impossible to get your chess coverage from people who aren't dependent on Magnus

@ccruzp06 The dress and behaviour codes are NOT ridiculous. The comfort and convenience of other competitors and the needs of advertisers and sponsors are important- very important. Once the dress&behaviour code is published and agreed the code should stand. In this case the enforcement was heavy-handed. I agree with Levy that allowing Magnus to finish the session dressed as he was would have been kinder, and certainly has no bearing on the results. If Magnus or anyone else was so offended by the rules I am sure the World's Press would have been delighted to hear about it before the event. Otherwise, if the code bothers you so much, why enter the event...?
@ccruzp064 сағат бұрын
@@ameroo6163 check out Levy's video for a more in depth explanation, but the tl;dr is that Magnus and other top players feel like they aren't getting enough revenue from FIDE tournaments and they don't agree with FIDE's rulings about stuff (see Magnus not defending the CWC) and so they have found people with money that are willing to sponsor other tournaments. This threatens FIDE's control over chess and apparently there were even threats of not allowing players who play in the Freestyle chess thing to play in FIDE tournaments.

For a chess organisation to take issue with the type of _fabric & cut_ of a competitor's pants is beyond absurd, and to treat grown adults like children by demanding they "go & change out of jeans" after they've already been competing all day without having any 'jeans-related incidents' is childishly petty... what's next, dictating hemline lengths lest someone reveal a little too much ankle?!
