In the part of the lecture about simple and complex cells, it's worth noting that many simple cells also respond best to movement in a particular direction (so it's not just complex cells). In fact, in layer 4 of visual cortex, where visual input is received, simple cells tend to be more direction selective than complex cells. Source: "Direction selectivity of neurons in visual cortex is non-linear and laminar dependent" by Kim and Freeman.
