-------------
Visions of Johanna -
words and music by Bob Dylan -
Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when
you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind
In the empty loft where the ladies play
blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper
of escapades out on the "D" train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane
Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna's not here
The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place
Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze I can't find my knees"
How can I explain?
Oh, it's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn
The peddler now speaks to the countess
who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
But like Louise always says "Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.

Thank you so much for posting this. This has got to be the best version of this magnificent song. He's so revered and yet so deserving and so underappreciated from the masses. He's the Shakespeare of the 20th century. He should be studied in Middle School. God bless God and the genius he or it has blessed you with Bob.

I often listen to this track and get just 'so hypnotised' by the music. I often think I'm going to try and listen to all of the words - but start listening and get so entranced by the music and the beat of the tune that I get lost in the music. Its hard to say anything new about Bobs music except it is so timeless in my opinion. 50 years on - and I still feel like I'm 17 !!

There's something about his performance here that makes this a top recording of this song (thank god someone in the audience bootlegged this video). That's typical Dylan: no performance is the same, always finding new quirks, new ways of saying the lines, different intonations and tempo. This one hits it at every level...

There's so much to love about this performance. Brilliant arrangement, incredible intro, one of the best opening lines in pop music,Dylan's own vocals - you could almost think he knew he'd sound like this when he wrote the song 50 years ago! But what really brings a smile to face whenever I listen to it, which is often, is that by the end it sounds as if all the instruments are about to fall apart; even the words seem determined to leave his mouth in a random order.

Its now 12.51 at night - but I'm mesmerized like a deer in the headlights of an oncoming car as I listen to this music. Hey man - I'm 68 years old but I still get a chill through my bones every time I listen to this. I just wish I was young enough to be an urban soldier again and pick up the cudgel to fight all those nasty people in government who make all these stupid decisions on our behalf (as we watch on from the sidelines and do nothing).

dylan has a hypnotic control...if you`re to analyse this....very adequate singing....very adequate guitar playing...hard to make out the vocals...no rapport with the audience...even the camera man seems to lose interest before the end...yet, he is loved by millions and has written marvellous songs...great to see him win the nobel prize...genius.

This song shows why Mr. Bob Dylan is awarded the Nobel Laureate for Literature 2016. And it also shows why he should be a Laureate for Music too - he plays a mean guitar line on "Visions". He truly is the Great Troubadour.

Feeling blessed to have walked this earth the same time as Dylan. Can't imagine never having had the opportunity to experience his genius. What a gift he is.

Notwithstanding everything else about his music that I love, I'm totally impressed by his guitar playing, it's out of this world.
