Dropping a honorary mention for the Delta S4 here. Twincharged that could do 1000 hp at 8 bar of pressure and could go from 0-100 in about 2.7s on gravel at 500hp.

What about the Triflux project for the evolution of Delta s4? That was a great invention, unfortunately never used in rally after the Group B ban.

@@lucaspillare6583 Indeed the Triflux engine was a great inovation. Could do 600HP. It was supposed to be used on Group S on the ECV, limited to 300hp. But saddly we never saw the day of Group S. Guess they got worried about the cars being even more extreme than the group B cars

I should have included the Lancia Delta S4 in this list. Other than that, the most powerful engine created by Honda in f1 was the RA-167e of 1987 present in the Williams FW11b with around 1000-1500 bhp depending on race or qualifying settings. The RA-168e of 1988 is a complete redesign of the engine attending the aerodinamic requeriments of Gordon Murray, for the ultra-flat McLaren MP4/4 and it had around 660-670 bhp. I hope you take this as a constructive commentary.

Three other insanely boosted race engines. 1. 1972 Offenhauser turbo 4 cyl. in USAC (Indycar). 1100+ hp. Apparently cars approached 370km/h on the straights of the superspeedways. 2. 1990 Nissan R90CK. 1100+ hp in qualifying. Reached 369km/h on the Mulsanne straight WITH the two chicanes in place. 3. 1988 PRV V6 used in WM Peugeot P88 LeMans racer. Boosted to 880hp. Did 405km/h on the Mulsanne straight. Unofficially Roger Dorchy drove 416km/h in practice for LeMans.

Good stuff, Visio Racer! The 917/30 for me always epitomized car design taken to excess. Mark Donohue's definition of enough Horsepower was if it could burn rubber all the way down the longest straight on a racetrack. The 917/30 was his machine built to achieve that ideal.

A customer of mine built an R5 out of a Le Car. He had to order a lot of customer suspension and engine parts, but most of two cars was the same. His shop's parts truck was an early Suzuki Samari with a 250cc toe stroke twin. This guy had quite a car collection. The R5 was awesome!

The valves were 4 for cylinder in Nimonic, a Nickel-based alloy normally used in high temperature and high mechanical stress applications. There was a dual supercharging system: a KKK k27 turbocharger with a Volumex volumetric compressor, patented by Abarth (Type R18). The Delta S4 road version deployed in the 1986 world championship could develop 650 hp (476 kW) with a boost pressure of 2.5 bar through an overboost adjustable from the passenger compartment. 5-speed manual gearbox and tubular steel frame, covered with composite material or its next version, the Lancia ECV acronym for experimental vehicle in composite first of its kind, the same engine only with 600 hp and double shaft. anyway, nice video! 👍👍

Audi Quattro really did spark many new cars in the 80's. Brilliant! But you should have included the 90 IMSA GTO with over 700 BHP on the same engine design, although with 20 valves instead of 10 and a displacement increased with 0.1 litres. Audi did test a new car for the Group S class that ended up having over 1000 BHP from their 2.1 litre 5 cylinder.

In Gran Turismo 4, I managed to tune the Renault 5 turbo rally car which had the same horsepower than normal Renault 5 turbo to around 450hp, but at the end of the day too much power equals more spinouts, I couldn't control the bastard.
