You left out the Berkeley 2-seat roadster, Mine was built in Bedfordshire, U.K. 300 to 400 cu in ram air-cooled motorcycle engine with an in-line motorcycle-type gearbox and electric start. Great little car. Got stopped in mine one day in the late 1950s by a police radar unit in California, not because I was speeding (I probably was) but because they were curious about why it did not register in their radar (fiberglass body). It was a conversation piece everywhere. The two-stroke engine had a dry sump, so a pint of oil was needed with each fill-up (4 gallons). But by stopping in at a truck stop for gas, they never charged me for the little bit of oil compared to what they usually sold. 50 mpg. Top speed about 70 mph. It had one significant weakness. It used a chain drive to the differential with a fiber gear that tended to wear out after a few thousand miles.

To these you can add the Bond Minicar, with the first model launched in 1949 having a 122 cc two-stroke Villiers engine. That was later upgraded to a 197 cc engine. By the 1958, it had a 248 cc Villiers engine. As it was taxed in the UK as a motorcycle, it had no reverse gear, although later models had the option of being able to run the engine in reverse as it had two sets of contact breakers and a starter that could also start the engine backwards (being a two stroke, there is no valve timing to worry about).

@ jam63112 true, I proofed this. 2CV never complained about a brick on gas pedal. Still, slowing down to French road speed (90 km/h or slightly above 55 mph), gas mileage did improve dramatically (33 to over 40 mpg).

Oscar Thorpe- What do you mean, "even in the 1970's"? Honda was high-rpm committed from their very first day in production, realizing that higher rpm's were the cheap way to get increased horsepower. My first motorcycle ride, with me driving, was on an early '60's Honda Sport 50. Today's 50-cc motor will get you up to about 30, 35 miles per hour, but that little sucker topped out at 50! There I was, feet on the passenger pegs, laying on top of the gas tank, all tucked in under the paint, no helmet, no goggles, screaming along at 50 mph, and I fell instantly in love! With motorcycles! I think that was the most exciting ride of my life, and I've owned over 30 of them since.

I would point out that the Citroen 2CV you showed was a UK example - which were not imported until after the 1973 oil crisis. By this time, they were possessed of a 603cc twin cylinder engine with a heady 29bhp at the right foot, so not strictly within your range. Furthermore, you have omitted the Bond Minicar which was of the same era as Isetta, Messerschmitt, Fulda - and boasted a 197cc motor.

When I was young we had the earlier fiat 500 with a 4 cylinder water cooled 4 stroke engine. A "countryman" body with wood panelling and a sunroof. Later I had one of the Bill Buckle sedan Goggomobiles with a 300 cc two stroke and a fibreglass body. The "H pattern" was rotated 90 degrees from most cars ( first forward and left, 2nd forward and right, 3rd backwards and left, 4th backwards and right. A very quick easy to use box. And it was needed in undulating conditions.

Concerning the Messerschmidt, the KR stands for "Kabinenroller", which literally means "cabine scooter". So even the manufacturer didn´t really consider it to be a car.

I saw a few of these when I lived in Paris from 1956-60. The Messer and the Isetta were common but the grey 2CV was literally everywhere. The 2CV was designed just before WWII and when the Nazis invaded France, the French took the pre-production model apart and buried the pieces, and the plans, all over the place. When the war was over, they dug the car up all over the place, reassembled it and started production. By the mid-50s you couldn't walk a block in Paris without seeing one. Incidentally, the French called the Isetta a "supositoire d'autobus", a bus suppository.

I gave away my 2CV last year. All in all a comfortable no-fuzz reliable thing. Rust was an issue, build-quality as well (shared with most cars of this time), but the construction itself was amazing. High mountains mid-winter were not an issue, neither Sahara crossings.

Interesting, but 2 errors: The Citroen 2CV has a 4 stroke engine, not 2 stroke - you can see the rocker covers on the engine, 2 stroke engines do not have rocker covers. Also, the Iso Isetta was a 2 stroke, but when BMW built it, they used their own 250cc 4 stroke engine - I know this, as I had the BMW motorcycle that used the same engine - a 1953 R25.

Don't forget the Berkeley if you can get hold of one! Later models were 328cc 2-stroke twins, both 3-wheeler an 4-wheeler versions, 70mph no prob. Later on a 3-cylinder 492cc version for the 4-wheeler, nicely nippy with all that 2-stroke torque. And finally a 692cc Royal Enfield 4-stroke with 52bhp, with twice the power/weight ratio of the then Mini Cooper! I had one, it remains to this day the most exciting car I've ever driven bar none. and boy, did she handle! Still miss her like mad. Along with my old cat too.

Robin Baker- One of my school mates in high school (early 1960's) had a Berkeley 500, powered by an Excelsior 2-stroke triple. Peels are still being made in kit form, was sad the Reliant Regal with the 600cc engine didn't make it or the 4 wheeled version the Rebel, the Messerschmitt is a crazy machine to drive and it prompted here in the UK the law that required trailered trucks to have anti-run under bars at back and sides as there was a few squelchings of the tiny car's and owners which just couldn't be seen by the lorry driver. Have always fancied owning a Velorex and the little camper van version of the Fiat 500 has caught my eye on occasion, the featured Subaru I think was a bit of a stab at copying the Beetle but in smaller form. 2CV means 2-Cylinder V-Motor.
7 жыл бұрын
*Walter 72:* _"2CV means 2-Cylinder V-Motor."_ - Nope, it means "Deux Chevaux-Vapeur". Its engine wasn't even a V-twin (or "V-Motor") but a flat-twin: _«The engine was designed by Walter Becchia and Lucien Gerard, with a nod to the classic BMW boxer motorcycle engine. It was an air-cooled, flat-twin, four-stroke, 375 cc engine with pushrod operated overhead valves and a hemispherical combustion chamber. The earliest model developed 9 PS (6.6 kW) DIN (6.5 kW). A 425 cc engine was introduced in 1955, followed in 1968 by a 602 cc one giving 28 bhp (21 kW) at 7000 rpm. With the 602 cc engine, the tax classification of the car changed so that it became a 3CV, but the name remained unchanged. A 435 cc engine was introduced at the same time to replace the 425 cc; the 435 cc engine car was named 2CV 4 while the 602 cc took the name 2CV 6 (a variant in Argentina took the name 3CV).»_ en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Citroën_2CV#Engines On the other hand, there had previously been a "Citroën 5 CV" with a 0.8 L straight-4 engine, and guess what, with five tax horsepower (see "Citroën Type C").

What's wrong with today? Nowadays "small" cars (yes, I'm looking at you Mini) are kinda... big! The engines aswell! Not to mention the kiddy immature commercials due to feminists saying the older commercials were "fake".

Xalataf- You're absolutely right. I have a 2003 Mini Cooper, and with its 1600 cc engine it's got plenty of power, more than it really needs. The new Mini is a 3-cylinder 1,000 cc unit with a turbo-charger, slated to put out more horsepower and torque than my 1.6-L. My point is this: any of the micro cars shown in this video would be a viable 'transportation mule' with a modern 600-700 cc power plant, that is, one with 4 valves per chamber with narrow valve angles, a centrally located spark plug, a Twin-Swirl Combustion Chamber, and a turbo-charger. It would have to be liquid-cooled in order to provide cabin heat and defrost. The air conditioning compressor can have its own electric motor to drive it, so it doesn't matter where you mount it, since all you need to run it is an alternator.... And it would produce enough power to be a kick to drive. So long as it would provide year-round comfort and be fun to drive, to say nothing of its minimal exhaust emissions, it'd be a hot seller.

Tiberiu- It would therefore require a certain relaxation of government safety standards. We absolutely HAVE to free ourselves up from the tyranny of the Chevy Suburban. Way too many people are buying big, dirty gas hog S.U.V.'s because of an over concern with collision safety. If government put an upper displacement limit on car engines (say, 700 cc) and motorcycle engines (360 cc) but allowed unlimited size for electric vehicles then the consumer would have a choice and both would drastically reduce emissions.

With 400 000 subscribers , it’s maybe time for you to hire a professional narrator. Your channel would gain in professionalism. Actors are usually good in narration, and many of them don’t charge much to do so.

Check out the Lightburn Zeta. A very small car with villiers 325cc (I think) engine. Made in Australia by the Lightburn Cement Mixer company. Not dissimilar to the Goggomobile in structure but very weird looking. Full fibreglass body. Front wheel drive. full independent suspension. Four speed forward and reverse. Engine runs forward or backwards Iowned one myself and loved it but horrendous maintenance costs. 🇦🇺

My Aunty used to own the Subaru 360 and she did mod to gain a bit more of power...Its quite a fuel guzzler although the performance is good for its engine size
@alexanderkasady68397 жыл бұрын
Norman Abdullah- Of course it was- it was a 2-stroke. Put a 4-stroke engine in it of equal size and she would have had a much more fuel efficient engine, especially if it was of a modern design- 4 valves per cylinder, narrow included valve angle, shallow combustion chamber and a turbo-charger. Hootchiemama! She'd soon find out why mounting an engine in the tail is a lousy idea. Install it in the nose, for a front-drive set-up, and we'd have a modern car with strong sales possibilities, especially if it was water-cooled so it would have cabin heat and windshield defrost.

Interesting group of cars. Would like to see some still being made but maybe crash test standards would keep them from being registered.
