Visiting Bratislava is a great surprise when traveling as most people do not think to visit this amazing city. But as with all cities there are things you will love and things you will hate.

I recommend heading outside of the city if you can. For example the town of Trnava is a bit of a hidden gem. It's a walled city about 45 minutes outside of Bratislava but it has a multitude of historic buildings and great atmosphere. Have a blast!

woltersworld Dont go.stil dirty city.nothing to see there, expensive and stupid people.Nothing changed, bratislava is 3 hours tourist city. So you can spend your time in viena or budapest and enjoyed it much more. But if you wanna see it again, you can go there in 2019 there wll be Men's World Ice Hockey Championships but its is going to be expensive i think.like everything in Slovakistan. As you mentioned the main railways station in capital city,it is still dirty hole. They havent changed it.

Hi Wolter, I actually know Bratislava quite well, so I can compare your likes and disikes from my own experience, and I can't fault you. I especially like that you're not unduly negative as no-one likes a professional moaner. And the cold winds can be attractive as it makes going into a warm bar or restaurant even more fun. The only thing I'd add is that Slovakia is blessed with some very beautiful countryside and provincial cities such as Banska Bistrica, Zvolen, Poprad in the Tatras mountains, and many others, especially in the centre of the country. They're all within easy reach by train or bus, hotels there are cheaper than downtown Bratislava, the folk are generally friendly and the food is for the most part hearty and filling.

@colorrrr glad i can help out. hopefully i can help get some more people heading to bratislava. my whole family had a great time there. Yeah, i am very glad to hear the train station will be getting redone. The center of town is amazing, but the trainstation is a bit off setting when you arrive and have no clue about the Slovak language. But we survived :) and had a great time! Thanks for the great city!

This video in addition to your "top 10" inspired me to investigate and eventually visit Bratislava for 3 nights in September. It is an interesting, casual and fun stopover between Vienna and Budapest that I probably would not have considered otherwise. The Bratislava ministry of tourism should pay you Mark! Seriously. BTW, things may have changed since your last visit. Happy to report that there were no beggars or homeless at the train station the three times I was there and everyone (except one taxi driver) spoke functional to excellent English and yes, I did get to some non-touristy places. My only two negatives were the taxi driver and the ticket lady at the station. It is widely known that taxis overcharge so I expected it. Still, it was pretty cheap. As for the cashier, she short changed me when I bought my ticket to Budapest and I know I should have counted my change in front of her before picking it up. It was only €1 so... I met a bunch of nice people and had a surprisingly great visit to Bratislava. Thanks for the tips!

I am slovakian, and I can't believe that visitors from all round the world like our capital city - Bratislava. Maybe it's because lot of us are in Bratislava every day, and don't realize how beautiful Bratislava is :) And public toilets... Unfortunately, this is well known problem, but nobody is dealing with it. That's why also we're using toilets in cafes, restaurants, shopping centers... Also, we haven't got ministry of tourism. We have " Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development" with tourism section, because of "saving money". In "" because immediately we save some money, stupid politicians steal them, and nobody of them hasn't been arrested yet :( Maybe you should try to visit our mountains, they are really beautiful :)

Yeah, you are very true about the wind. I guess that we are used to it(in the summer it is really nice to have a chilly breeze to cool you down in 35°C hot weather), when I moved into another city last year I missed the wind :)

1 - some people in bratislava don't own houses 2 - it's windy here 3 - hotels cost money 4 - its small 5 - you have to be a customer to use the toilet Good things about bratislava: 1 - it's easy to leave bratislava and get to Vienna 2 - it's easy to leave bratislava and go to nature 3 - bratislava is small 4- (if you're American) food is cheap 5 - you can drink

I was fortunate to be able to spend and evening and night in Bratislava. It is along the Danube. The hotel where we stayed was so comfortable. We ate at a small place by the river that had very good and inexpensive meal. Our meal for 2, with a bottle of wine was less expensive than a cheap meal for one in US. We even stopped in an "American"style bar for a Budwiss... If you are in that part of the world, I highly urge you to see Bratislava.

it was 12 years ago, but the cost was very low and the quality very good. We had a 3 course meal for two for twenty dollars(even at that time, it was excellent price) not sure of the lodging cost, but it also was inexpensive compared to many places.

@Vandertop It is a fun town to stay at. Some of the cheap airlines fly (or at least used to fly) to bratislava and called it Vienna (Vienna is only about 30-45 min on the train). It is still cheap to eat really well and drink to your heart's content. People were nice and my family and i would go back in a heartbeat. have a great trip! please subscribe!

Great video. Thank you for clarifying the difference between Czechoslovakia and Slovakia :)) Yes, hotels could be cheaper, restrooms and main train station are... problem. As someone who comes from Bratislava, I agree with you. I get frequently stopped by tourists asking for directions and I actually enjoy it :D There are also cool sightseeing places in Bratislava, like Kamzik tower, UFO (top of the New/SNP Bridge), Slavin (Russian WW2 memorial). Some tourists enjoy local breweries. It's all up to you. Peace :)

And you're sadly right about the current state of the railway station. It bugs the locals as well and over the past few yeras, there have been some pretty heated arguments about the delayed reconstruction that it was supposed to go through in the near future. It is pretty shameful that the capital city has such a neglected station. Hopefully there will be a proper reconstruction in a few years at the latest.

Well, you've definately convinced me about going to Bratislava! Though I can't seem to find a travel company on the internet that has any good deals (ie flight+hotel combined) from the UK. I might have to book them separately. The castle looks awesome, as do the views I've seen in other people's videos. As for being overweight, enjoy the food while you can but try not to get TOO big or you'll end up on medication for high blood pressure when you're older, like me!

couple of things I have to disagree with: I visited in early October, and there was no noticeable wind. The temperature was around 18-20C in the day, and quite mild at night. I stayed in a great hotel, 10 minutes walk from the Old Town, for €35 a night. This was for a large 2 room apartment with kitchen, lounge area, minibar, big TV etc. But also there are good deals in the old town I found (e.g.Hotel Ibis for €30 a night). Of course, prices may have come down since you made your video, and perhaps October is a cheap time to visit compared with summer or Christmas.

Muhammad Abubakr Budapest , Prague and Vienna are the Golden Triangle’s Capitals of Europe , that means , they are and have of quasi the best of everything if you know what I mean.... so I’d definitely choose Bratislava to study and stay, and as Budapest two hours and Vienna less than an hour journey by train you can visit them for party, gastronomy and culture... Bratislava offers affordable accommodations, you don’t need to commute , no need to spend on public transport as the town is on the smallish side, very compact and you’re never far from anything. Good luck.

I would suggest a couple of updates. We didn't see any beggars at the railway station, and in fact it's very new and clean. However, you have to take a bus to the city centre, and you may find that difficult to work out so do your research first. As well, I think they've dealt with the washroom sanitation, at least in the tourist areas. We liked this very beautiful and photogenic city, but we decided you probably don't need more than one day there, unless you want to get deeper into the history and culture of the place.

also, i don't think that bratislava is "the best" of slovakia. it's not bad, the architecture is nice, but it's really kind of gheto-y at places, and kind of uninteresting, except maybe for the night life. it's just a regular with a hint of history if you wanna really get your breath taken you should visit some historic towns set in actual nature, filled with historical buildings everywhere, such as "banská štiavnica". it's a pain to get there but it is definitely worth it. oh and- go in summer

I had a great time in Bratislava but taxi drivers ripped us off and the young men were very aggressive towards me.

What is strange that not everyone in Slovakia speaks English? In Slovakia people speaks Slovakian. Is this so strange?

It's not strange, but it's different from Berlin or Paris. In those cities, most people speak the native language, but you can easily find an English speaker or signs with English translations. This is not true in most of central and eastern Europe; it really helps to know at least the basics of one Slavic language.

Frijole In Berlin - yes, I agree but in Paris or in France in general not at all. Even if someone speaks English they do not want to do it. In petrol stations, hotels even in tourist information sometimes (!). The same in Italy. I am traveling around Europe constantly. Every week I'm somewhere because of my work and business. Since early 90 I'm traveling also to Central and Eastern Europe, mainly to Poland, Czech rep,, Slovakia and Hungary and never had any language problems. Of course, people on the street may not be able to comunicate in English but in any place where they are expected to do so the do it perfectly. Also the level of hotel standard and service if you go to Prague, Warsaw or Cracow or other well known places in Eastern Europe in much, much better in places on comparable level in France or even Germany.

Let's not get nationalistic here. Of course Slovak people will speak Slovak. But I have found that many young people, both in Bratislava and the provinces, also speak foreign languages such as English and this is very much appreciated by grateful travellers and tourists. Thank you to all those kind Slovaks who took the time, with great patience and a smile, to help a traveller such as me. Diakouiem!
