1.Don’t drink Tap water 💧 2. Don’t try to figure out the Residential address. 3. Don’t be afraid to talk to locals. (Most people are friendly ) 4.Don’t expect the first price given to you. Negotiate for lower price. Car rentals / housing 5. Must get an assigned seat on a ferry ⛴️ boat. 6. Ask you server to recommend local dishes. 7. Don’t try to Rush the pace ! Accept the slower pace ( slow down ) 8. Don’t flush toilet 🚽 paper. The pipes are small than USA or other countries.

Great video Anastasiya, I do agree with almost everything you are saying! My only objection is the "negotiating prices" thing. Many prices in Greece are fixed and not negotionable. People will get offended if someone will try to negotiate prices which are fixed to everybody and not negotionable (like the tickets of the buses and the ferries, the restaurant prices - stated on the Menu - etc.). There is room though to negotiate prices in places like tourists' shops, when buying from street vendors e.t.c. It always depends on the overall "context".

I’ve been going to Greece for over 30 years and I agree with EVERYTHING she said. When it comes to negotiating, you can often get a better price if you pay cash for rentals etc. Also, don’t waste your money in Santorini, it’s completely over run with cruise ships and twice as expensive

Great lists of "don'ts". Even at the grocery store on an island they said not to drink the water. Glad we have not had to have anything shipped to us. @Cherish God we have a filter in our home in Kos, but it’s kind of a pain in the butt to change. Some of the restaurants also use a filter… my kids still use the bottled water, they’re 12 years old, so - this is what they’re used to

Hi, I am looking forward to my "food and wine tasting" tour of Greece in October; will be on the main land, but will visit Crete. So excited. I appreciated these "don'ts" in our video and listened with interest to the one on the "toilet." Hmmm. We are so spoiled in the US, so I will keep this one in mind. (I've been to Italy many times --similar situation with toilets there). Agreed, things really slow down, but I like the slower pace in restaurants.
@StayFabulousTL

So happy you are finding my videos useful for your trip! I enjoy slower pace in the restaurants as well. Unfortunately, in the more popular islands they now tell you for how long you can have a table. Usually, it depends on the amount of people, but it can be anywhere between one hour and a half and three hours.

Stay away from taxis, they will rip you off. There is a train from the airport to Athens. Monastiraki is a good place to stay in Athens, maximum 3 days needed, central, close to the sites, restaurants and vibrant. Then head south to the Peloponnese. Nafplio is worth it. Voidikilia beach is a MUST! Check out what to do in the Peloponnese. You won't go wrong. The north of Greece is nice, but offers little. Crete is MAGNIFICENT!!!! Chania is a good place to use as a base. Balos beach is a MUST! but there are so many nice beaches in Crete. Crete is a civilized island. Whilst they want your money they are far more interested in making you happy, the money is the bonus for them. Hope this helps.

Tap water in Greece is greate. Athens has the best water in Europe and that happens to the 90% of the mainland. The landscape is the reason for that. But the islands is another story and that make sense of course, because of the lack of natural resources.

I'm planning to keep a large bucket of water next to the toilet to add to the toilet. The toilet water level in Greece holds a very small amount. I'm used to USA where the toilets hold more water and the pipes are much wider. Toilet paper cannot be flushed down the toilets in Greece because it may clog the narrow plumbing pipes, which all need to be replaced.

Never heared of water being contaminated in the Greek Islands. It is true that in several small Aegian sea islands, tap water is undrinkable due to being too brackish and does not taste good, so it is used only for bathing and washing. But it is certainly not contaminated.

Welcome to the community! It depends which islands you decide to visit. If you go with Paros and Santorini, for example, and you have 5 days in Greece, I would recommend getting a flight to one of the islands and then taking a ferry between them. The flight from Athens to Santorini is so quick, we got there in literally 40 minutes. With a ferry it would be almost a full day adventure.

Greek here correct In everything except the negotiation. Given the hospitality and the free snacks and meals it may sound awkward for those working in tourism to try to lower the prices on accommodation for you. They will think you are a cheap tourist. Going out to eat n drink and try to negotiating prices it would frustrate them. Do not do it. They will think “what a gypsy” yes we say that not into your face but behind your back. Now the islands we don’t drink the tap water there because there are small particles of sand in the water. If you drink it though you won’t feel sick or anything but it isn’t healthy. We cook with bottled water as well in islands. Ice cubes with bottled water or a machine. Athens and mainland have good quality tap water nothing to be afraid just sometimes you may smell a bit of chlorine (a slight smell) because we don’t have osmosis here so avoid it but if you drink it you won’t get sick. It’s just a slight aftertaste which I personally don’t like it. I am just living in Athens but I drink bottles water and cook with bottled water. Many Greeks don’t do it. They use tap water. But I get personally annoyed with the slight aftertaste of chlorine in my tap water so I avoid it.

Just a comment .. when "negotiation" comes... "taxes" are gone... Meaning you wont get a receipt , you pay with no taxes, and state get nothing. Just saying.... All prices in Greece includes taxes. When they tell you lower price than shows, that means they except taxes and dont give you receipt. Also... When you pay, ALWAYS claim your qr code receipt. Otherwise they put tax difference in their pockets... From a Greek...

Nice video! I'm Greek and i can verify everything you said is true. One thing only, tap water is of excellent quality, especially in most large mainland cities (Capital city Athens included ) but please do your research beforehand, just to be on the safe side. Greek islands mostly lack drinking water, so use bottled water (pretty cheap in Greece). There's a typical stereotype of Greeks being fat. Well.. come here, stay for more than just a couple of weeks and watch your body weight rising.. Food and drinks are cheap compared to the States or other western countries, absolutely delicious and of good quality and quantity. Most Greeks will offer to pay [ κερασμενο=paid by me/on the house] for your meal or drinks once you become friends. In Greece, things that seem unimaginable to other countries, here are the norm. There's even places in Greece, (e.g. Crete island) that locals get offended if you do NOT accept them pay for your food/beverages/drinks! Enjoy your stay here!

You say that in Greece, a driver might stop in the middle of the street or road for whatever reason, and he won't care about the vehicles he is holding up. That is very inconsiderate and irresponsible to me. What if an ambulance tries to get a critically sick or injured person to a hospital?

Well, of course I am sure it's a different story then. But overall, what I noticed in countries like Greece, Italy, etc people take their time with whatever they are doing.

Paul, I always get amazing deals in Greece and Italy simply by asking for a discount. All the Greeks and Italians I know do the same. I don’t see what’s the big deal about it. Obviously, if they are willing to give a discount, it works for them.

In May June, and late Sept, I always haggle for renting hotel rooms. Greek hotel owners are notorious for profiling, They think they know what you can afford. I never tell them I'm from Canada and give them a Greek address. I know for a fact they will soak the Germans and English more so than Australians and Canadians. After I haggle and get what I want, they will tell me don't tell the Germans here what you paid for the room. They're a hoot. I have heard them say to Greeks; don't tell the Canadians what you paid for the room. I had the identical room that an English couple had; they were paying 105 Euro a night and I was paying 70.

hey, i'm planning to visit one of the Islands in May. so far your videos have been very informative, so I have a question for you! I want to visit, but can't decide which Island would be best for me. I really want to enjoy sandy beaches, and also would like to visit an Island where there are parties and night life. I prefer not to visit Crete because it's too mainstream and too large, and I just can't get cheap tickets for Rhodes. What Islands would you recommend?

I have visited Crete several times. The north coast is very touristy, the south coast is much calmer and prettier. Use your search engine to look at photos of Elephonisis, in the west of Crete. Loutro is a nice little village, with the pretty hotel Phoenix a five minute walk over the headland. This is the site of where St. Paul first arrived in Crete. You can hire kayaks here, or go swimming. If you are interested in hiking, Samaria Gorge is a steep trail down to the sea, about 18km long. In the east of Crete, you can visit Spinalonga. The last leper colony in Europe, they moved all the inhabitants of the small island to Athens in 1949 but the remains of their houses and shops are still visible. Small ferry boats will take you out to the island. I recommend hiring a car or quad as there are so many interesting places to see and visit. Purchase a good guide book before you go. Lonely Planet, or Rough Guides are both good. Enjoy your holiday.

In some specific very touristic places they kinda are. For example in places like Mykonos or Santorini they are literally drinking the blood of tourists, foreign and Greek alike. But generally the prices are fixed and if you start haggling around as if its some kind of oriental bazaar you will only make everybody mad. Just stay away from tourist traps.

@@joek600 : Santorini is beautiful. If you travel a little way inland, away from the cliff top restaurants, prices drop dramatically. I remember reading that Santorini was once thought to be the home of vampire bats. An early tourist review perhaps? The beaches in the southern part of the island are black volcanic sand. Oia, in the north, pronounced eeah, is really pretty and popular for its sunsets.
