I visited Petra with a tour group in March. Our tour guide dropped us off at our hotel while he went to Aqaba to pick up members who were joining our group from Egypt. I was on my own for the evening and learned about the "Petra At Night" tour from the hotel clerk. I immediately bought a ticket for that tour and had the most incredible evening ever! The Siq path had candles in bags to show the way and when we got to the Treasury, there was a half hour program of three musicians playing ancient instruments while a light show lit up the Treasure. Unforgettable! Seeing it the next day in the daylight was amazing and our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history. I didn't walk to the monastery, however, since we had a time limit to be back at the entrance to leave for the next part of our trip - Israel. We visited Israel before Passover/Ramadan so did not see or experience any conflict during our time there. That was an epic tour! I recommend going at time when there are no religious holidays or festivals scheduled, however.

It's really hard to imagine how people built such a great building back then, It is not easy to build the stone road just to get there, It's a pity that you can't go in that big temple, but you climb up and walk over there, let us see the mausoleum above, and the ancient theater from the top, it is really a worthwhile trip!

In fact, the city is not actually carved into the mountain, only the graves of the residents and a few of the public buildings have been carved into the sandstone. The actual city was within the valley but today almost none of the buildings can be seen. The valley was protected from possible flash floods by numerous dams in Nabatean times, and the collected water and washed-up mud were then used for irrigation and agriculture around the city. The water supply within the city was ensured by 8 springs from its surroundings, the furthest of which was 7 km away. The water was brought to the city in canals made of fired clay pipes, where it was then collected in numerous cisterns. It is even assumed that there are other water channels under the ground that have not yet been excavated.

Hey Carol and Chris, Petra is an amazing city, with all of it carved into the hills of sand stones. I find it to be one of the most fascinating ancient cities in the world, just like the valley of the kings. I am glad you have gone to this area to visit, as I have always been fascinated about these old cities. These places you go are in biblical times, this makes me excited about these videos. The monastery is a really big carving!! No crosses because it is a Muslin nation and Christianity is frowned upon, this is why you see no crosses in this Christian sector. That was some crazy walking to go through Petra, and it is sad that tourists get scammed, I had cheats and liars, plus find it sad they make it a bad experience that you remember on ones vacation. Better to watch it through the both of you, then actually visit myself. Even it being a wonder of the world and loving the desert, at my age and such bad health, it would be to much. In my youth I would of spent days walking through every part of Petra. Thanks for the amazingly great video, to bad they do not let you do drones due to regional wars. Be safe on these trips. Later old friends✌🏻🙏🏻🌴🐪🌴😎

When we talk about something carved into the rock, I recommend you to see Ellora and Ajanta caves. Both sites are out of this world. Abu simbel with more than 3000-year-old history, it has more complex internal room. Without the surrounded beautiful entrance like Petra, it is still breathtaking level. Thanks for sharing a lovely video.

I've spent many days in Petra, and want to go back again. There is something special about this place. Just imagine how busy it must have been when the caravans arrived to take their respite after traveling the deserts of Arabia for weeks. This place must have been the closest to civilization they would have seen for months. I mean your own covered room, water conduits (and sanitation), an amphitheater for singing, dancing and gatherings. I wish I could go back in time to spend a week during that period. Remember, at that time it was not a religious place, so wine must have been brought by the travelers coming from the north (the land of Jesus). Good times. Fun fact 1: when people lived there, there were a lot of scaffolding, made form bamboo to access what seems like the 2nd and 3rd floors. And those are not tombs but dwellings/habitaciones. Fun fact 2: there are many sections buried under the rubble, which is now the main street of facades. It is sediment from various floods over the centuries.

Petra deserves to be one of the wonders of the world. The best way in entering petra via the siq is a camel and once you saw the the sight of The Treasury from the siq is a sight behold. And when there is rain the sandstone turns darker rose red in colour. The Monastery is beautiful as well and you can enter them before as well. I have been lucky to visit Petra 5 times as i lived there for six years. You can enter The Treasury before but on my return to Jordan 5-6 years ago they stopped it. Next the Dead Sea and Jerash? Thanks for the video it brings back beautiful memories.

The reason it's cooler in Amman is that the city has an elevation of 1 000 meters above sea level. Temperature usually reduces with very close to 1 degree centigrad for every 100 meters of elevation, so 10 degrees cooler at that elevation is absolutely what you should expect. :)

Hey there, we meant that Petra is a lot cooler than Amman and wadi rum. Amman was much hotter than here

The Monastery at the top is hard because it has 800 steps to get to it. It is just as amazing as the Treasury. There is also an amazing walk to "The Edge of the World" with spectacular views.

The only wonder I have not seen. The video inspired me to get there soon. I had not realised how large the complex is. Awesome work Carol and Chris.

A 4 hour drive from Petra to the caves of Shuaib, the people of the Prophet Shuaib (Jathro), who was mentioned in the Bible and the Qur’an, near which there is a well, springs and the rock of Moses. This is what Arab historians believe. Golden Tulip Resort in Sharma. You can stay in it, and the area has beautiful beaches and is suitable for diving in Sharma, Magna, Duba, or near Ras Sheikh Humaid or Tiran Island, Saudi Arabia.

I went to Petra a few months ago. I was amazed at how prestine most of the carvings were, like they were done last week. Great video was fun to watch it from a different point of view!
