First and last time I was there was in 1976 with my uncle Christy, I was allowed on a mini sub, happy memories, RIP Christy.

Very good vid. IWM is an awesome place. I worked on the design and fit out of the interactives and showcase dressings. Needless to say my best job ever, it's what got me into british militaria! The artefacts were taken very seriously, full security accompanying the curators when they installed them in the cases .... for obvious reasons.

I couldn't see it in the video, but they have an amazing Das Reich tunic on display. I would often chat to Sid in the shop years ago about museums.

Great video...., went there last year on a visit up to London,, was one of the trips highlights 😌. The First World War section in particular was exceptional, so much to see!! Fantastic place, some great exhibits (big & small), and as you mentioned the Holocaust exhibit is incredibly moving. Well worth a visit....🙂👍

I have a question. I have one of those German artillery caps’ what material is the visor part supposed to be? I got one and i want to make sure it’s real.

Great video, I’m still a bit disappointed every time I go that it never changes. They have so much in their archives that I wish they would rotate some of the exhibits. The SBR on backwards on the British Great War mannequin frustrates me as well, it’s been like that for as long as I can remember.....

I agree with you, I went to the one in Leeds recently having not been for years and it never changes, as you say I know they have an enormous amount of archived items

The Chatham Dockyard fair has been running - How come we never see you at that one sir?
@1220b3 жыл бұрын
It's not high end enough. Full of fakes, reproduction items and piles of crap. Not to mention 45 year old single men walking around in SAS Gulf War uniforms. Regimentals care about thier reputation.

@@1220b Fair enough. I spend a lot of money with regimentals but I still enjoy going on a hunt through the “piles of crap”. It does turn up the occasional gem.

Thanks for making and loading this video Dan - very interesting to see again, but I'd lose the soft-rock music, or put some classical music behind it, perhaps more in period sounds. I was at the RAF Museum at Hendon on Sunday, to see how their refit and redesign has come out. I like the contemporary modernisation of the IWM London, but too many of the great artifacts are not displayed now as they once were, and there's too much attention to space instead. The National Army Museum has come off even worse, with a sort of dumbing down of the original exhibits and a loss of the historical atmosphere that I used to love there.

I think the best part of the museum is covered in this video. The 'new improved' museum, in my (humble) opinion, is nowhere near as good as the old one. Nothing like as many exhibits. Where have all the WW2 tanks & vehicles gone? Where have all the amazing WW1 & 2 uniforms gone? Far too much open space, no historic atmosphere any more. Very disappointing to someone who has seen the old museum. Anyone visiting for the first time might well be pleased as they have no previous experience with which to compare.
