President Rodrigo Roa Duterte conferred the Wounded Personnel Medal to seven wounded-in-action (WIA) soldiers at Camp Edilberto Evangelista Station Hospital of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID).
The Commander-in-Chief came to visit the WIA soldiers in the Battle Casualty Rooms, personally checking their condition, boosting their morale, and even cracking jokes with them. He also gave financial assistance and mobile phones to each one of them, and offered a Glock 30, .45 caliber pistol.
Four of the admitted soldiers, namely Pfc. Marquin Variacion, Pfc. Vincent Niño Lopez, Pvt. Regie Joy Duyan and Pvt. Ramon Balibagon, were wounded after a series of encounters with the New People’s Army (NPA) at the vicinity of Barangay Kaulayanan in Sugbongcogon, Misamis Oriental on February 28, 2017.
Meanwhile, Sgt. Joshua Delawan and Pfc. Jenesses Andam sustained gunshot wounds after an armed clash with ten NPAs who are believed to be members of the Guerilla Front Committee-3. The encounter took place at Barangay Limot in Veruela, Agusan del Sur on February 24, 2017.
The last wounded soldier, 2Lt. Daniel De Guzman, received multiple injuries after a firefight with the NPA members of Sandatahang Platon Pampropaganda, 16-B Guerilla Front-16, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee. The encounter happened at Barangay Tinago in Malimono, Surigao del Norte on February 27, 2017.
The clashes occurred as the soldiers responded to complaints and reports from the civilian populace. The wounded soldiers came from different troops.
